Country Fire Service / Re: Trigger for CFS to change to MFS
« on: December 19, 2010, 11:36:49 AM »
CFS needs to support Pumpers across the urban interface zone similar to Burnsides, they should be at stations like TTG, Athelstone, Belair, Happy Valley etc this would give them appliances that do a proper EMA COQ job, there by giving both services a better mix.
Mt Barker will eventually be a paid service, in what guise that is the big question!

All it takes is money and the will to do it......both are a sticking point!

without sounding like i'm anti CFS- wouldn't/or shouldn't the needs of the community come first?

If the CFS heirachy aren't interested in helping the local brigade by equipping them appropriately (or at least advocating/pushing the gov't for the funding) - then why wouldn't the MFS, who equip their crew with the appropriate gear not be put into that community??

Obviously the C in CFS stands for COUNTRY......so I can understand why they are 'having trouble' getting their head around the concept of a decent pumper or an aerial!

This round of flooding, could have easily been handled as good as a bush fire.

HA i know what your suggesting....Yes Bushfires too have failed management :P

So when to push the button? Does SES have a "Trigger Point" for complimentary service involvement, if so is that pre determined, ie predicted weather event continuation, with multiple job stacking already occurring! Or is it left to individuals to make this assessment?

Imagine if the "Trigger Point" was something really really simple....like.... uuumm ...I don't know.....say something like closest most appropriate!

Sorry LETS not get confused here!!!! CFSVA state/group/brigade reps are voted in to as seudo union reps NOT a make operational decisions rep, if that is what they want to be ask us!...... its what we volunteers call "consultation", something the CFSVA has been banging on about to CFS staff at the direction of the CFS volunteers they represent for ages.

By way of an explanation: A massive flood deluges a rural area, in this area lives a god fearing man whos property will no doubt be inundated by the flood waters, as all his neighbours are evacuating they ask him to accompany them to safety. The god fearing man tells to leave without him as god will save him!.

Later as the flood waters start to swirl around his house the local emergency brigade drive up in a large 4wd to evacuate him to safety, again he dismisses their help stating "God will save me".

That evening as he is standing on the 2nd storey balcony of his house with the ground floor of his house completely under water, a rescue boat from the local emergency brigade arrive to rescue him, once again he ignores their pleas saying "God will save me".

The next morning a helicopter spots the lonely figure of the man sitting on the roof of his house with floodwaters raging around him, from their low hover they try to get him to fly with them to safety, once again he refuses saying "God will save me".

Finally as the waters are eddying around his chin a submarine unbelievably surfaces alongside him, trying to pull him to safety he once again dismisses their pleas, saying "God will save me".

That afternoon the man drowns, eventually he finds himself in heaven standing before God, the man is very angry, he confronts God telling him of the spartan life he lived on Earth and his unwavering devotion to God and his devastation that God didnt save him!.

God looks at the angry farmer with a perplexed look upon his face and says "what did you want , I sent a 4wd drive, I sent you a boat, I then sent you a helicopter.....Fux sake I even sent you a submarine....what more did you want!"

CFSVA is only as effective as the people they represent let them be!
If we as a total service cannot get behind them, they will only ever be mildly effective, in fact their position at present is almost untenable!

Is familiarity the start of loss of control, or the start of a better working relationship?
This question relates to both volunteer to volunteer interaction and paid staff to volunteer interactions.
At what point does familiararity become more of the problem than the solution?
Also is familiararity a trigger for a drop in professionalism and is that acceptable to a degree, once youve been "Accepted"

Thoughts "O" learned ones (Numbers clearly thats not you 8-))

Cheers Jaff

If both Eliz, salisburys and Gawlers are on different calls in Elizabeth/SAlisbury area, who's looking after Gawler?

Dalkeith, Gawler River, Roseworthy, Concordia...

So if there was a house fire or something, you'd have to wait 10 or so minutes alone for cfs to get a crew and that is if they don't default...........

Yeh but if we were paid, we would be quicker....coz we would be sitting around all day doing FA, waiting for the bells to drop...sound familiar?

A TOURIST boat, with passengers on board, has been rescued by the Metropolitan Fire Service after it was stranded on a sand bar near Outer Harbor on Friday afternoon.
The Port Princess was on a dolphin spotting cruise around the Port River when it was buffeted by strong winds and blown off course.

It became stranded on a sand bar, unable to free itself under its own power.

An MFS spokeswoman said a fire boat, The Gallantry, has now successfully attached a toe rope to the Port Princess and has lifted the vessel from the sand bar.

"The MFS Gallantry will toe the vessel half way down the Port River into calmer waters with tourists still safely aboard the Port Princess," she said.

"The rescue itself was postponed for approximately 10 minutes to allow a fuel tanker vessel to pass safely before The Gallantry assisted the tourist boat.

"It appears that the very windy conditions in the area had caused the tourist boat to run aground to the sand bar."

Yeh I know small things, amusing small minds!

Hypotheticals / Re: Domestic Response
« on: October 11, 2010, 11:22:32 AM »
Andrew, current procedure in Adelaide Fire [as requested by CFS state] is that operators phone local ALERTS for 90% of brigades, who then decide who they want. The operators have no say in it and can only suggest brigades follow SOPs etc.

Alex are your suggestions based on your knowledge of areas, or do you other than the RCR directory have a prompt?
