Country Fire Service / Robbing Peter to pay Paul

Is the current Stirling station.......issue a case in point?

If the decision is made to "invest" further monies into this site, is it a case of throwing good after bad or is it a wise investment?, and what will that impact upon across the region/state.

Requests should they be granted upon a needs basis or the squeakiest wheel basis?

This post is not about having a go at any one brigade, but a reflection upon the varying expectations of brigades and groups throughout the state and how their "needs/desires" impact upon the rest of the service, monetarily, public perception wise and service moral wise!

SA Firefighter General / CFSVA
« on: November 22, 2010, 01:27:15 PM »
By way of an explanation: A massive flood deluges a rural area, in this area lives a god fearing man whos property will no doubt be inundated by the flood waters, as all his neighbours are evacuating they ask him to accompany them to safety. The god fearing man tells to leave without him as god will save him!.

Later as the flood waters start to swirl around his house the local emergency brigade drive up in a large 4wd to evacuate him to safety, again he dismisses their help stating "God will save me".

That evening as he is standing on the 2nd storey balcony of his house with the ground floor of his house completely under water, a rescue boat from the local emergency brigade arrive to rescue him, once again he ignores their pleas saying "God will save me".

The next morning a helicopter spots the lonely figure of the man sitting on the roof of his house with floodwaters raging around him, from their low hover they try to get him to fly with them to safety, once again he refuses saying "God will save me".

Finally as the waters are eddying around his chin a submarine unbelievably surfaces alongside him, trying to pull him to safety he once again dismisses their pleas, saying "God will save me".

That afternoon the man drowns, eventually he finds himself in heaven standing before God, the man is very angry, he confronts God telling him of the spartan life he lived on Earth and his unwavering devotion to God and his devastation that God didnt save him!.

God looks at the angry farmer with a perplexed look upon his face and says "what did you want , I sent a 4wd drive, I sent you a boat, I then sent you a helicopter.....Fux sake I even sent you a submarine....what more did you want!"

CFSVA is only as effective as the people they represent let them be!
If we as a total service cannot get behind them, they will only ever be mildly effective, in fact their position at present is almost untenable!

SA Firefighter General / Attitude adjustment?
« on: November 03, 2010, 10:26:35 AM »
Is familiarity the start of loss of control, or the start of a better working relationship?
This question relates to both volunteer to volunteer interaction and paid staff to volunteer interactions.
At what point does familiararity become more of the problem than the solution?
Also is familiararity a trigger for a drop in professionalism and is that acceptable to a degree, once youve been "Accepted"

Thoughts "O" learned ones (Numbers clearly thats not you 8-))

A TOURIST boat, with passengers on board, has been rescued by the Metropolitan Fire Service after it was stranded on a sand bar near Outer Harbor on Friday afternoon.
The Port Princess was on a dolphin spotting cruise around the Port River when it was buffeted by strong winds and blown off course.

It became stranded on a sand bar, unable to free itself under its own power.

An MFS spokeswoman said a fire boat, The Gallantry, has now successfully attached a toe rope to the Port Princess and has lifted the vessel from the sand bar.

"The MFS Gallantry will toe the vessel half way down the Port River into calmer waters with tourists still safely aboard the Port Princess," she said.

"The rescue itself was postponed for approximately 10 minutes to allow a fuel tanker vessel to pass safely before The Gallantry assisted the tourist boat.

"It appears that the very windy conditions in the area had caused the tourist boat to run aground to the sand bar."

DEH overachiving once again..

The above DEH overachieving once again is a quote from zippy!  My question to y'all is, You have a set area to burnout in a predetermined time, to keep up with a scheduled burnplan and it starts to spotover,

(1) is this poor fire management as seems to be suggested?

(2)Or is this just one more part of the job, that we risk manage?

Me I am going with the second option, for my money that is why we brief crews beforehand on the importance of keeping a lookout!

SAAS / Whistleblower blows
« on: July 06, 2009, 12:46:12 AM »
WEST Australia's private ambulance company is fatally flawed, leaving patients to die waiting for assistance, whistleblower paramedics say.

ABC Television's Four Corners program tonight will reveal four deaths which staff say could have been avoided, if not for communication problems at the call centre.

In once case, an elderly woman died while waiting two hours for ambulance assistance.

Despite the caller insisting her grandmother was seriously sick, the call operator classified the job a "priority four" and "non-urgent".

With their identities protected, about 30 paramedics have spoken out, saying repeated requests for a new system to prioritise emergency calls have fallen on deaf ears.

They also say investigations into patient deaths which were not deemed a priority by the call centre should be made public.

The whistleblowers have collected internal audits which revealed 65 priority one cases were not initially dispatched as emergencies by the call centre in March this year.

"Being a paramedic we see lots of unfortunate things that are sad, it's part of what we do," one paramedic says during the program.

"And we live with that.

"But when we see people dying, young or old, when it's a system failure and it was very avoidable and the system has been told and refuses to fix itself, it's something you can't live with and that's why we're here."

Looks like the cats amongst the pigeons again!

Country Fire Service / Not Happy?
« on: June 18, 2009, 11:33:42 AM »
If your not happy with your lot in your brigade, group or region, then here is the place to vent your spleen! .......or is it?
What I would like to ask EVERYONE is have you followed the chain of command in your enquiries/request?
If your enquiry/request is denied, do you reassess as to why your request/enquiry didn't pan out as you would have liked, eg does it not fit in with the organisations big picture, or are you being unrealistic in your expectations?
If your expectations are not met, do you act like a petulant child and lash out at the organisation? or do you reassess your expectations and if they are still valid seek to progress them through the channels that have been set up for this!

The one TRUE strength of our organisation is the staff at regional levels, they get paid wages that in NO WAY reflect the dedication/service they give to the job, the reason most of them continue in their jobs is love for the service, not the pay or the excellent prospects for advancement, I would suggest if regional staff had their way you would have every wish and whim granted. The reality is, that cannot happen.
So if your request is denied, reassess the situation with the big picture being taken into consideration, revalidate your expectations, if they are still valid follow the procedures to the end, "talk" to the stakeholders, most of them are volunteers as well and only want what is best, if its possible!
Remember as most posters, post with an alias, it is done with annonymity and facts are in some cases are rubbery at best, but the damage that angry unvalidated posts to CFS staff (the people that give far more than their pay levels suggest they should, because of their love of the service) who suprise suprise look at this website, can be huge!

So be mindful of the harm unsubstanciated claims/posts can cause to people, that are for the most part doing all they can to help!

SA Firefighter General / worrying?

Extract taken from Saturdays Daily Telegraph, kinda changes the ballgame if governments aren't prepared to stand behind the vollies............GAME ON!  :|

May 23, 2009 12:00am

VOLUNTEER firefighters are furious at a State Government move to have them named and personally held liable for the multi-million dollar cost of the deadly Canberra firestorm.

The NSW Government, fighting legal action by people who lost homes in the 2003 fire, has abandoned Rural Fire Service volunteers.

In a David and Goliath fight, Brindabella farmer Wayne West is suing the Government over the failure of the RFS to attack the McIntyre's Hut blaze in NSW early enough.

It burned for 10 days before melding with three other fires in the ACT, creating a firestorm on January 18 in which four people died and 500 homes were lost, among them Mr West's home on Wyora Station.

Government lawyer, John Maconachie, QC, told ACT Chief Justice Terence Higgins responsibility was not that of government but of firefighters, as they were volunteers not employees.

"This is filtered amazing," Volunteer Firefighters Association president Peter Cannon said yesterday. "I can tell you now that if they are going to go down that track, they are going to be fighting every volunteer firefighter in the state."

Mr Cannon, group captain of Parkes Shire RFS and a firefighter of 40 years, said volunteers would be worried.

"Who wants litigation when you are serving the community, protecting them against fires?" he said.

Mr West claimed the McIntyre's Hut fire, started by a lightning strike, could have easily been extinguished in the early days when the weather was calm but there was evidence the RFS resolved to let it burn because it was in what they labelled "scheiße country".

Yesterday he accused the Government of using legal tactics to prolong the litigation in the hope he would run out of money, but said it won't work.

In February, the High Court rejected a NSW Government appeal to strike out his benchmark case which will be the first of more than 4000 claims, including for property and personal injury, heard in the ACT Supreme Court on March 1 next year.

OFF Topic / Swine flu pandemic
« on: April 30, 2009, 11:53:50 AM »
It seems Swine Flu (SF) starting to ramp up in the world and the World Health Organisation (WHO) has upgraded it to level 5, what this means for Australia has yet to be revealed.
So is this a media beat up?
CFS are having a teleconference today 30/4/09 to discuss this as well as other things, will there be a directive for volunteers or just your generic health warning?
Will we all end up wearing surgical masks? if so I'm going for a single white cotton glove Michael Jackson style as well!
If you are unfortunate enough to contract SF will you exhibit normal flu like symptons runny nose and a cough that has you barking like a dog or will you end up squeeling like a pig?
Is there a higher WHO grade than 5 and if so when its asked for will there be some Scottish gitt somewhere mumbling to himself "she no take it cappan, these grades were neva desinned to go to warp factor 8"?

Thoughts?....................other than Jaff your Ritalin dose is overdue!

SA Firefighter General / How to use the momentum?
« on: February 11, 2009, 09:57:07 PM »
There is no doubt the recent Victorian bushfires have traumatised and mesmerised a nation, since European settlement of this country its the worst "natural" disaster we have witnessed.
Please, in NO WAY am I discounting what has occurred, to do so would be to dishonour the countless deaths and acts of heroism by so many, what I am asking is what could the Emergency services do with the public and media focus they are surely under right now.
Example: How many of you CFS members have had members of the general public asking you about bushfire readiness since Saturday the 7th?
Is it the right time for a media blitz on bushfire readiness?
Is it the right time for your brigade to have a community breakfast and discuss fire safety?
Is it the right time to have a recruitment drive?
This weekend through the Adelaide hills, I guarantee that there will be hundreds of people outside doing cleanups that should have occurred months ago!!!!!!!
So would our organisation be seen to be "Heartless or Opportunistic" to really push the bushfire preparedness message now? Or would we be saving the ignorant from themselves?

SA Firefighter General / "Oh the times they are a changin"
« on: November 20, 2008, 11:45:39 AM »
With the response term of "closest most appropriate" now being as good as nailed down, do our services now look at their core business and see if other services are closer and can perform the task needed with their current equipment.
Point in case - Tree down, in my part of the world SES are the combatent agency for storm damage, now the tree that needs attention may well be within 4 kilometers of 3 different CFS brigades, all equipped with chainsaws and qualified people, is it not ludicrous to respond a SES truck that comes from 20 kilometers away to do the same job?
Will the new SACAD system and its "closest most appropriate" response stipulation cut through the interservice foot stomping and posturing and give the public the service it deserves!
Please note this is not having a go at any ONE service, but simply asking the question in these times of falling volunteer numbers, can we be more efficient with the resources we already have???  :|

SA Firefighter General / Useless Tools
« on: November 13, 2008, 12:03:41 AM »
Useless Tools, not the ones occupying the front left hand seat, but those widgets that were placed on the appliance by that strange guy at the brigade, who has a unusual odour you can't quite put your finger on, but its a bit like wet cat food, as no'one has the heart to tell him we dont need rolls of aluminium foil to build a personal burnover shelta, its stayed on the truck!
Mind you the aluminium foil could come in handy for protection in case the government agents try to alter your thought patterns with ultrasonic radio thingy majigs! :-D
So can we loose some weight by ditching some excess baggage from the truck

SA Firefighter General / Soil dryness/dingos dongers/relevance?
« on: November 09, 2008, 10:28:50 PM »
So anyone who has a look at the Gov BOM SDIs would be noticing that they are worse than last year 07/08, anyone who has tried to dig a hole recently would attest to the accuracy of these figures.
Through the hills the gums are becoming more and more stressed, last year saw a die back of a fair number, this year may be worse? does this a change the way we potentialy fight fires .eg. fighting from the blacktop more and more, extra tankers/bwcs being called for.
Or is it just some whitemans magic to justify his degree, with no significance to us the emergency services!
Thoughts, my learned coleauges? Numbers you can play too ,even though you are a drooling halfwit! :-D

SA Firefighter General / Accidents are they real?
« on: August 18, 2008, 11:00:42 AM »
Are accidents real? Or is it the unfortunate's inattention?
Technically I cannot think of a situation where if you traced the root cause back, that it wouldn't be the Swiss cheese method of the innattentive or careless holes lining up to cause an event!

Thoughts?
