SA Fire Fighter Events / 25th Anniversary of Ash Wednesday
« on: January 26, 2008, 02:57:19 PM »
The 25th Anniversary of the Ash Wednesday Bushfires commemoration will be held at 'The Mount Lofty Botanic Gardens' on Saturday, 16th February 2008 at 1530.

The SASESVA are wishing to contact SES volunteers who were involved (past & present) and they have issued a general invite to the ceremony.

I assume the CFSVA are organising similar.

OFF Topic / Oz Day 2008 awards
« on: December 03, 2007, 08:21:11 PM »
An article in the local Messenger press caught my eye last week. If you live in the Onkaparinga Council area, they have extended the nomination closing date for both 'Australia Day 2008 citizen awards'.

More details can be found at http://www.onkaparingacity.com/web/page?pg=1831&stypen=html

This shocked me because many CFS brigades and other emergency services exist in the Onkaparinga Council area, but no one has nominated !!!!!!

Given the recent awards given at a ceremony last week to CFS members at Mt Bold Fires, I am surprised that Onkaparinga COuncil do not have the nominations.

Do the other councils in SA have awards for Australia Day and has someone been nominated ? Something to think about..

Be quick, the Onkaparinga nominations close on Friday 7th December 2007.

Incident Operations / Cobdogla - Bruno Bay fires
« on: November 19, 2007, 01:32:40 PM »
Can anyone give me a 6 figure grid reference to where approximately the fire edge is closest to Cobdogla ? I wish to show people on a 1:250000 or 1:50000 topographic maps that I have in OziExplorer. Or maybe a google earth link ?

I have friends who live in Adelaide with permanent, on-site caravans at the Cobdogla Caravan Park who are nervous. Some are not sure if they should make the trip to Cobdogla to secure or remove their private property.

The CFS press releases warns of smoke, but no information on fire direction or risks.

Also the name 'Bruno Bay' does not link to anything in the maps.

Any assistance would be appreciated to stop people un-necessarily travelling inb the area is appreciated.

Other Government Agencies / '000' answering process
« on: October 22, 2007, 06:08:56 PM »
Hi,

I am co-ordinating a SES display & activity evening at a local Guide group. The emphasis will be on Land Search, Lost kids & emergencies.

One of the activities is to get the girls to dial on a telephone handset (that is not connected) the 000 number. Then an adult can be the Telstra call-taker, then a local call-taker. The adult can lead the girl in providing their address or current location, what has happened & their telephone number.

From memory, I think the Telstra operator asks:
1/ Do you want police, fire or ambulance ?
2/ What state & township are you in ?

Then you are connected to the call receipt & dispatch centre for that organisation.

Can anyone tell me if I have the order of Telstra questions correct & do they ask anything different ?

Thanks,
Andrew Mac

Media Release : Cliff Rescue

SES Volunteers rescue boat crew

State Emergency Service Volunteers from Port Lincoln responded to an
emergency distress call from a 50ft shark boat with two crew off
Moonlight Bay on Whalers' Way near Port Lincoln. 4-5 metre seas and
winds of 25 knots and gusting made conditions for rescue dangerous.

The boat had sheltered from the gale force winds near Cape Carnot.

The boat ended up on rocks just a few metres from the base of a 12
metre cliff. The men were stranded on the rocks for about 4 hours but
police were able to locate them through the distress signal and rescue
Volunteers were called about 12.30.

The SES crew responded with abseiling equipment when it was clear that
they could not use boats in the rough sea. They abseiled to the rocks
below, then used a ladder to reach the men who were clinging to rocks.

A "flying fox" was used to get harnesses to the men and Port Lincoln
Unit member Colin Coates coaxed the men along the ladder and then
assisted them to the top of the cliff. The rescue helicopter provided
light from above for the rescue.

West Region SES Commander Robert Charlton said." The conditions were
appalling, it was dark and the rocks were sharp but our Volunteers are
trained for this type of work in the worst conditions. The Port
Lincoln Unit recently completed SES Vertical Rescue training and this
incident let them apply the techniques in difficult conditions. Colin
is a specialist in Vertical Rescue."

Tumby Bay SES, Police and the SA Ambulance Service also assisted at
the scene.

Media Release : An early fire danger warning for Thursday

CFS Media Release

The SA Country Fire Service (CFS) is advising the community that
Thursday 30 August is expected to be a day of increased fire danger
for many parts of the state.

CFS Deputy State Coordinator, Malim Watts, said that this Thursday is
expected to be a high-risk day with the Bureau of Meteorology
forecasting warm temperatures and strong winds.

"It is possible that there will be a number of fire ban districts
subject to a total fire ban on Thursday particularly where there is
scrub or forested areas across the State.

"Fire ban advice for Thursday will be confirmed late tomorrow afternoon.

"On a day like Thursday there is potential for burn-offs to spread out
of control and escalate into larger scale bushfires.

"While CFS encourages property owners to reduce the vegetation load
around their homes, we're simply asking people to wait until after
Thursday before lighting any burn-offs," he said.

"Fires can also rekindle days or even weeks after burn-offs have
occurred so it's important to continue monitoring the burnt area.

"Yesterday, South Australia experienced winds and warm weather and
several fires began on the Eyre Peninsula from burn-offs rekindling.

"The forecast for Thursday will be similar to what we experienced
yesterday," Malim said.

"People need to ensure they are bushfire ready and revisit their
bushfire preparation work they conducted around their properties this
time last year.

For more information on burning-off, or how to prepare for the fire
danger season, visit www.cfs.org.au or contact your local council Fire
Prevention Officer, CFS Regional Office or local fire brigade.

Other Government Agencies / Lights & Sirens driving
« on: August 19, 2007, 07:25:25 AM »
During the working week, I witnessed the following:

Station wagon, emergency services car with multi-lights on top active. Siren was active on a pulse sound. Approaching North Tce from King William St near the Festival Centre. Travelling in a southern direction. Single person in the car.

This was during a lunchtime, mid working week and the new tram tracks are being built in the area. Heavy traffic was at a stand-still on the corner of North Tce & King William St traffic lights.

I first saw the vehicle when it was on the outer lane (near median strip), wrong side of King William St travelling south. This was near the traffic lights at the Festival Centre.

Because the traffic lights were red, traffic was stopped across all four lanes (both sides) so the vehicle was blocked.

He turned into the turning gap in the median strip & waited for traffic to clear. The sirens & lights were left on.

Because of the lights & sirens (I assume), the traffic did not move when lights turned green. I assume because they did not know which way the emergency vehicle was going to go.

The emergency vehicle then moved to the parking/bus stop lane on the wrong side of the road. This was the only lane clear.

He then continued traveling south on the wrong side of King William St in the parking lane/bus stops, until he reached the intersection of North Tce & King William St.

He then turned right, heading down North Tce towards West Tce.

On North Tce he was on the wrong side of the road in the outer lane (near median strip).

Now my questions are:

1/ He was responding to a possible life threat incident. But is traveling in the parking lane on the wrong side of a four lane road (one side) in the city too dangerous ?

2/ With the city becoming more unfriendly to vehicles, is there a designated/recommended route for emergency vehicles to take to cross the city ? Or should there be ?

Can the vehicles travel on the tram tracks part of the road when they are finished ?

For background on question 2, I work in a city building on North Tce. Since the new tram tracks have been installed, emergency vehicles using lights/sirens have consistently been blocked by traffic while traveling on North Tce.

I assumed this would all be resolved when the construction works have been completed, but now I wonder !!!

Please note, that I am not a current designated P1 driver. I have driven lights/sirens many years ago and I am a current emergency service vehicle driver. But not P1.

Observations and comments are made not as a criticism, but for myself to learn more. Thus I am not mentioning the agency involved because it would not aid the discussion.

The new facility is impressive with two adjoined high, dual roller door

accomodates the meeting, kitchen, CFS Ops and SES Ops areas. It also
contains offices for SES Unit Mgmt, CFS Brigade Mgmt & CFS Group.

SASES / Vertical rescue at Stirling
« on: June 29, 2007, 11:26:29 AM »
I have seen the Channel10 news footage of the Rescue of a 60yr old male person from the water tank. He was working on the SA Water tank roof when he fell in. The water tank was empty.

Great to see SES and CFS working together. The news report stated 20 personnel at the scene.

From the footage I could see a ladder derick formed against the concrete side of the tank. The rope fed through pulleys to the hauling crew which included other bystanders.

SAMFS / Pt Pirie radio advert for MFS
« on: June 21, 2007, 06:33:48 PM »
I was in Port Pirie on Wednesday night & listening to the local FM radio station.

I was surprised when I heard a commercial advert on the radio advertising positions vacant at the country MFS stations. This was for retained & full-time crew.

I had assumed the MFS recruit courses were over subscribed. Does this mean that they have problems gaining country based staff, but are full in metropolitan areas ?

SASES / Death of SES member
« on: February 13, 2007, 09:43:33 AM »
Condolances to the family of Peter Godfrey who died has a result of a car accident. Peter's car was hit by a high-speed car trying to escape from Police. Peter was on his way to work at the time & thus an innocent bystander.

My sympathy goes to members of Northern Districts SES (Peter's Unit) and Enfield SES (Peter's father is a member). The family have been long-term supporters of volunteering and SES.

It makes you think how quick a tragic accident can happen.....

SA Firefighter General / Soil Dryness Index
« on: January 31, 2007, 04:50:12 PM »
On the 17th December I attended some training with CFS staff. It was stated then that the 'Soil Dryness Index' at Mt Crawford was very, very high.

Can this measure be viewed on a website ? Is this only done at Mt Crawford or is the testing completed at other sites.

I am curious on how much of the recent rain, changed the index value.

Thanks,
Andrew Mac.

How many places available on an intake ?
I read somewhere, that some people are already in pre-training for MFS recruitment. Is this true ? If so, why advertise for more potential recruits when you already have a squad in training ?

123
Hi,

I have been asked to provide some more information re SES to a forum member. Can you create a SASES area similar to SAMFS ?

SES is now

Then I would appreciate the 'SES FAQ' postings to go in this heading.

Thanks,

Two teams of SES structural crews (one each from Sturt & Noarlunga SES)leaving Adelaide tonight for Renmark.

Multi-agency response using Riverland based MFS, CFS & SES crews this afternoon & tonight.
-------------------------------
Last Update: Saturday, January 6, 2007. 7:10pm (AEDT)
Flash storm lashes SA homes
A severe storm has damaged houses and businesses in South Australia's Riverland, in the state's south-east.

Wind gusts of up to 91 kilometres an hour swept through Renmark around 4pm ACDT.

SES spokesman Scott Turner says no-one has been hurt but up to 30 buildings have lost roofs, trees have been ripped up and power lines have been brought down.

"Over the next few hours, SES crews will focus on repairing roofs and covering roofs that have been damaged, removing debris," he said.

"We have a number of car ports that have been destroyed, we have a lot of trees on buildings."

He says the main storm front only lasted 10 minutes but caused havoc.

"Certain streets of Renmark just look like it's rained," he said.

"You drive into other streets and there are trees covering three-quarters of the streets, roofs have been ripped off and there's roofing iron and tiles on the street.

"Very, very selective - in one street in particular, we have one house where it's roof has been totally destroyed, yet no other house in the street has been touched."
