SASES / Glenelg, New Years Eve & Day 2008
« on: January 03, 2009, 07:30:18 AM »
SES volunteers assisted SAAS, St John, SAPOL & Glenelg Council at the Glenelg News Year Eve celebrations. Interesting & enjoyable deployment involving 25 to 30 SES volunteers and one paid staff member.

First crews setup at 1730 on 31/12/2008 and crews left at 0400 on 01/01/2009.

Two communications centers maintained and multiple stretcher carries using rescue litters or foldup stretchers. Some volunteers were advisers to the general public and runners for all ESO & Council.

Many things learnt & a good experience.

Fire Fighter Training / first-aid training
« on: December 29, 2008, 02:40:05 PM »
My last refresher course in first-aid competency was not delivered by St John's or Red Cross. I have found several companies (small & large) who now have a Registered Training Organisation status & can deliver the Senior First-Aid course.

One of the reasons the organisation went with the other company was the reduced cost.

Firstly, I believe all MFS and all SES people have the qualification. Is this still a restricted qualification to a few within each CFS brigade (excluding rescue brigades) ?

I am curious because another thread was talking about deployment of AED's & if not everyone has the qualification....then wouldn't the money be better spent in training the other members ?

Do people believe this is a good change in extra RTO's being able to deliver training courses in (eg Public Safety standard) better in the long term ?

Personally, I think it was great because the course included some extra components to match the audience needs, rather than 'from the book'.

A HELICOPTER has crashed after hitting power lines in a paddock near Murray Bridge, with three people injured.

Police and emergency services are at the crash site , 8kms from Murray Bridge, near Wagenknecht Rd and Woolshed Rd.

The pilot is understood to have been thrown clear from the wreckage while another person is trapped underneath the helicopter and another person is trapped inside.

One of those trapped has suffered chest injuries and is unconscious while the other person is conscious and speaking to paramedics.

The helicopter is understood to have been conducting power line inspections for ETSA Utilities.

A rescue helicopter is flying to the scene from Adelaide with a specialist paramedic retrieval team.

A crane also is being sent to the site to lift the helicopter off the trapped person.

The third person, understood to be the pilot, is mobile and has suffered only minor injuries.

Country Fire Service / New CFS website
« on: October 31, 2008, 05:27:56 PM »
The new CFS website has been 'soft launched' this afternoon by SAFECOM. This is ahead of all four websites being officially launched mid-November. Any feedback on the website is requested via the form at the end of the 'Contact Us' section.

The email I received is:

"Colleagues

The CFS has today gone live with their new-look internet site, the first of the sector’s revamped sites to be released for public viewing.

A sector-wide project team has been working extremely hard over the past few months to redesign the way we present information to the public via the internet and transferring all the data to the new content management system.

The new sites of the CFS, MFS, SES, and SAFECOM will have a common look and feel whilst still retaining the individual identity and branding of each agency, and will have common menu structures to help with searching for information.

Whilst the look and feel will remain fairly constant, a range of enhancements are already planned to further improve the functionality and will be added over time.

The CFS site has gone live this afternoon with a ‘soft launch’ and the next two weeks will be used as a final testing period to iron out any bugs and put the final touches to the site ahead of a more public launch of all four sites jointly in mid November.

The community will benefit from the additional information available from the site including real time updates from CRIIMSON showing Current Incidents.

Community information is one of the six priorities in the sector’s new Strategic Direction and this project is going to be a key initiative in helping to improve the way we communicate with our stakeholders and the community.

I encourage you all to take the opportunity to have a look at the new site at www.cfs.sa.gov.au and provide feedback via the feedback form at the end of the Contact Us so that we can make any final adjustments before the other sites go live and are publicly launched.

Kind regards

All Equipment discussion / NATMAP Electronic Maps 2008
« on: September 05, 2008, 10:31:31 PM »
Hi,

From another internet discussion group, I found that 'NATMAP Electronic
Maps 2008' will be available for an estimated price of $99 shortly.

I use a set of 2002 electronic maps in OziExplorer & I am looking at
updating the map set.

Details can be found at
http://www.ga.gov.au/nmd/products/maps/raster250k/

Does anyone use the previous versions of the maps (previously called
Raster maps) & can give an opinion of any pitfalls ? Do you use them
within OziExplorer or the software delivered with the DVD's ?

Thanks in advance,
Andrew Mac

Several months ago I joined a discussion regards the cost of volunteering.

The conversation between a few people was stating that volunteering to emergency services involves a cost to the volunteer, but the volunteer has a choice of how much they pay. For example, not everyone can afford the latest helmet light or prussic cordage. But everyone pays for their own car or petrol.

The conversation went specifically to the potential of recruiting day-time responders from the Centrelink recipients & partners of single income households. The issue was that the volunteer would need to have car transport to attend callouts & training. Not all people can afford to own a reliable car.

My wife volunteers to do home visiting for a government agency. She receives $0.64 per kilometre when using her own car to visit clients (from home to client & return). As an emergency service volunteer, we receive reimbursement for travel to some training courses in the same manner.

A person then stated that they had responded to 3 seperate incidents during a weekend. Each incident involved travel of approximately 6 kilometres one way. So that person paid for 36 kms of travel in their car.

Sorry for the long text, but when petrol reaches $2.00 plus per litre, can you personally afford to respond to incidents or the same amount of training courses ? Will this affect country regions more because of the longer distances to travel ?

Incident Operations / House fire at Seaford
« on: July 23, 2008, 07:31:13 PM »
Congratulations to Seaford CFS brigade..

This afternoon I was driving on Victor Harbor Rd heading towards the intersection of South Rd. We could see alot of dark smoke from the Seaford Rise area.

As we crossed South Rd into Griffiths Dr we saw the heat plume of smoke being closer.

When we arrived at the transport corridor land on Griffiths Dr to begin locating the source location of the smoke (we assumed it was on damp grass or rubbish burnoff) the Seaford CFS Pumper was coming towards us with lights & sirens going.

Spectator cars were already around, so we left the area.

When we went past the Seaford CFS Brigade shed on our way home, two MFS pumpers were driving past on Commercial Rd, with lights/sirens going.

We noticed that Seaford's 24 truck was out of the brigade shed with some volunteers in PPE.

It is a pity the end result (see news report below), but great to see the services working together and that the Seaford CFS volunteers still respond to the truck when the community requires, even after the MFS moving saga.

From a local resident, thanks....

Puppy dog perishes in house fire in Adelaide's south

A WOMAN mowing her lawn was oblivious to her Seaford Rise house burning down behind her today - in which the family's pet puppy perished.

The fire started around 1.30pm, and caused about $100,000 damage.

The woman initially couldn't find her three-year-old son and it is not known if he was inside the house when the fire started. He was found safely outside the home.

The first crew arrived within two minutes of receiving a Triple 0 call from the woman and neighbours but could do little to save the Driftwood Crescent house which was completely destroyed.

About 20 MFS and CFS personnel responded to the incident.

Fire cause investigators are currently at the scene.

Lightning sparks hundreds of fires in California

Lightning sparks hundreds of fires in California
Story Highlights
Lightning sparks hundreds of fires around Northern California

Fire spreads across 6 square miles in Solano, Napa counties

Wildfires have destroyed at least 125 homes in Northern California this year

Fire threatened more than 100 buildings 40 miles southwest of Sacramento

SAN FRANCISCO, California (AP) -- Hundreds of wildfires sparked by lightning flared Sunday across the heart of wine country and remote forests in Northern California, the latest batch of destructive blazes in the bone-dry state.

One had spread across nearly 6 square miles (15 1/2 square kilometers) by early Sunday after starting the previous afternoon in Napa County and quickly moving into a mostly rural area of Solano County.

The fire threatened more than 100 buildings as it fed on grassy woodland about 40 miles (64 kilometers) southwest of Sacramento, said Roger Archey, a spokesman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, or Cal Fire.

It was 35 percent contained Sunday evening and had destroyed one home, officials said. Evacuations were ordered for some residents, said agency spokeswoman Nancy Carniglia.Watch wildfires burn in Napa »

Wildfires have destroyed more than 175 homes in Northern California so far this year. Blazes started popping up in the region just as California's unofficial fire season began in mid-May, following the state's driest two-month period on record.

Two small blazes about 25 miles (40 kilometers) south of San Jose forced several residents from their homes Sunday. Both were partially contained, and officials said most residents would be let back into their homes by Monday. Those fires were also blamed on lightning.

Thunderstorms were responsible for as many as 75 fires in Shasta-Trinity National Forest, about 160 miles (257 kilometers) north of Sacramento. None immediately threatened homes, said Forest Service spokesman Michael Odle.

Mendocino County had as many as 90 fires, charring nearly 8 square miles (21 square kilometers), Cal Fire officials said.

South of San Francisco, a fire that started Friday in Santa Cruz County and destroyed homes and closed a stretch of highway was contained after charring just less than a square mile (2.59 sq. kilometer). Evacuation orders were lifted Saturday, a day after roughly 2,000 people fled their homes.

It was the third major blaze to hit Santa Cruz County in the past month. A 520-acre (210-hectare) blaze destroyed 11 buildings in the Santa Cruz Mountains, and a fire near Corralitos covered more than 4,200 acres (1,700 hectares) and destroyed about 100 buildings.

Along the coast in the Los Padres National Forest, a wildfire burning since Saturday forced 75 homes and businesses to be evacuated. And just miles (kilometers) away, firefighters worked to stanch a huge fire that has destroyed two homes since it began two weeks ago. It was nearly 60 percent contained after charring 83 square miles (215 square kilometers).

In southern New Mexico, firefighters burned out vegetation along a forest road to stop a 67-square-mile (173-sq. kilometer) wildfire. The fire was 35 percent contained Sunday, fire information officer Deanna Younger said.

Two other lightning-sparked wildfires also had burned nearly 47 square miles (122 sq. kilometers). One was west of Roswell in southern New Mexico and the other west of Raton in the northern part of the state.

MFS crews and SES volunteers are attempting to stop the block and clean the floors.

$26m to fund more ambulances and paramedics in South Australia

SOUTH Australia's ambulance service will get a $26.6 million funding boost in next week's State Budget for extra staff, vehicles and equipment.

Health Minister John Hill said the money would fund an extra 72 staff positions and 96,000 extra call-outs for paramedics over the next four years.

Global positioning devices will be installed in ambulances to make sure the closest vehicle to an incident is dispatched, Mr Hill said.

SA Ambulance Service responds to more than 230,000 calls for help a year.

The Budget will be handed down on June 5.

I noticed on page 23 (I think) of today's (29/05/2008) Advertiser that Salisbury CFS are having a 65th anniversary open day & demonstrations.

Unfortunately the website http://www.aussiepcs.com/salisburycfs/News.htm only gives news of the 60th anniversary, so I suspect this is out of date. But hard to tell when no year is placed on the dates on the website.

Does anyone have further information ?

SA Firefighter General / Fire in your brigade or LHQ
« on: May 15, 2008, 10:04:20 PM »
Just for something different to discuss. I read the following article tonight:-
-----------------------
"A STATE Emergency Service building in Sydney's inner west was gutted by fire overnight, NSW Fire Brigades said.

Firefighters were called to the Strathfield area SES building on Coronation Parade in Enfield shortly before 3am (AEST) today.

There they found the wooden 30m by 10m structure well alight.

No one was inside and firefighters were able to protect the SES emergency vehicle inside and surrounding properties.

It took six units to put out the fire shortly before 5am (AEST), but the building was gutted, firefighters said.

Crews remained on site mopping up".
-----------------------

I work in the Information Technology area & we are very aware of business continuity issues in the event of a small or large emergency.

The worst scenario is that we cannot get into the building's computer room for a week due to fire or other incident. How does the information stayed secured & be available ? How does the business keep running ?

Within your local Brigade or Headquarters, if you were fire damaged I assume it is just a default to the next service if an incident occurs.

I also assume that if your CFS Brigade shed is on fire & you cannot get to the truck, then you would wait for the next available resource to arrive. Is this correct ?

But what about the personnel & financial records ? Do you think the brigade would be rebuilt or survive ?

I know that Karoonda CFS shed was badly damaged by storm a few years ago & it was rebuilt with no issues. So I assume I am being paranoid.

What do you think ?

SA Firefighter General / Blue cats eyes instead of fire posts
« on: May 07, 2008, 11:03:06 AM »
I have noticed in the Adelaide metropolitan area that new blue cats eye markers have been installed on the road surface near water outlet covers. I assume this is a better replacement than fire posts near the kerbs. The metal road covers have also been painted in the centre with reflective yellow paint.

Is this being installed in the country areas (eg major towns) ?

Are you finding this effective in locating the nearest water supply at incidents ?

From a non fire fighter person, it seems a great idea that is a simple system & requires minimal maintenance. The only negative is when I ride a motorbike it is another road surface hazard to miss. But that is minor.

Ohh well, another Adelaide Motor Show been & gone without a inter-service Road Crash Rescue competition held

This would be the second year that MFS, CFS, SES and interstate teams have not competed. I believe that the paid Competition Organiser position for the three services was lost a few years ago, thus no paid staff have time.

Is this inter-service competition missed by others & do we have any suggestions on who to approach to get this happening again (eg Minister, SAFECOM, individual CEO's, etc) ??

Rollout of new fire fighting trucks begins

The Lambells Lagoon Volunteer Bushfire Brigade says its new $60,000 dollar fire truck means it's better equipped than ever to deal with dangerous blazes.

The purchase is part of a Territory Government plan to buy two trucks a year over the next five years for volunteer brigades.

The brigade's captain Michael Delis says the four-wheel drive truck will improve the unit's ability to fight fires in Darwin's rural area.

"The conditions we've had, with a lot of rain, we're in for a big fire season.

"Traditionally, access to some of these fire grounds is restricted because of the old big tankers we used just weren't four-wheel drive.

"It gives us another fire fighting resource that you don't have to park up on the side of the road and just sit there and fuel up cars. You can actually get in there and do something with this too."

The truck has been bought from the West Australian Government.

unfortunately most CFS crews and vehicles in this situation wouldn't have a rescue litter with them as they are like hens teeth in CFS  and hence not on rural trucks.

Above is a response regards treating a 'back pain' injured person in a remote location. I have had a limited look at CFS trucks and I thought both of the Meadows CFS trucks I looked at had rescue litters strapped on top. But I could be wrong.

What first-aid & rescue gear does a rural CFS truck (non rescue) carry ?

If you came across an injured person after a grass fire has past or in a country town structure fire, do you have enough equipment ?

Genuine question in learning more about CFS resources.

Fundraising Appeal

GOLD COIN FOR GEOFF APPEAL

Watch the Appeal Launch Video on YouTube http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=Z1WbbM0Cx3k

In November 2006, Mount Bryan CFS Brigade fire fighter Geoff Buyrn’s life changed forever. Geoff was responding to a fire when the truck he was driving rolled over on a steep hill side. It happened in just a few seconds. Geoff is now a quadriplegic and requires daily therapy and support. His positive spirit, fierce determination and great big smile are an inspiration to all of us.

To help our injured mate, the CFS, CFS Foundation and CFS Volunteers Association are launching a fundraising campaign: ‘GOLD COIN FOR GEOFF’

CFS staff and members across South Australia are encouraged to dig deep and donate a gold coin to help make Geoff’s life that little bit easier. Your generosity will assist him in many ways such as setting up a computer system so he can stay in touch with friends and family.

Proudly supported by the SA Country Fire Service, the CFS Foundation and the CFS Volunteer Association.
