Everything else about the tour down under has had massive amounts of planning, and contingencies...... not sure why there wasn't a clean up crew too!!

Pip

Agreed Pip, if they can have a dedicated spotted plane keeping an eye on fire activity along the TDU route, and at one stage 2x rotary wing bombers and a spotter platform on active standby, a cleanup/chainsaw crew should have been a given.

This was not an emergency event............ more like worried event organizers mitigating embarrassment with Adelaide in the spotlight. AdelaideNow reported "have been no warnings announced over race radio". If this was the case, perhaps the TDU organisers were trying to keep it all hush hush............. that was never going to happen.

Most probably have a road sweeper on standby next year. But....

** this was during the community ride before the TDU started & affected cyclists
** what is the difference to community risk from this incident & your 'clean up' pagers for oil, grain spills & post Road Accident incidents ?

I agree with the money spent that should have risks covered. Last year they had SAAS, SES and CFS vehicles following the TDU cyclists during each stage. Not sure if they have the same this year.

Meh, shut the road till its safe.

Genuine curiosity...how do you bring cars to a stop from 100km/hr without leadup signage when you shut the road, compared to slowing them down to 40 or 25 ?

I agree with 'shut the road' but in country areas & twisting roads without SAPOL everywhere, how ?

I assume you just call extra trucks to provide the road blocks away from the incident zone.

....What maps are you using?

I have 1:50000 and 1:250000 topographical, as well as a 2002 continuous topographical map of Adelaide Hills & Mid-North area.

Mainly used for private bush walking (with paper map & compass, but GPS backup)

So was curious if Adelaide Fire could process a GPS position.

If I ever need to, will do a distance estimate to the closest road.

SA Firefighter General / GPS co-ordinates & SACAD
January 01, 2012, 11:31:18 AM
I am expanding my knowledge on modern GPS devices & how latitude / longitude co-ordinates can be displayed easily on the device of your current position.

I know in Google Earth you can input the co-ordinates & you will see where the person is. I am learning if I can do that OziExplorer(incl Android version) & other products.

A question for MFS ComCen operators:-

If you were given the South & East degree co-ordinates position (degrees, minutes, seconds) of a incident, could you plot that & thus respond resources ?

Would another format of the position work better (eg UTM)?

Thanks,

Personally, nope...money could have been used for other things

3 possible scenarios;

a: They acknowledged and then did not respond.
b: Meningie CFS (34P) is in the system as a dual response rescue.
c: The system didn't work.

Your thoughts....

I thought Meningie SES handed the RCR role to CFS months ago....

Are ses on sacad yet?

Do they get defaulted when responded via AF?  Is it an issue since intercad isn't online yet.

Adelaide Fire process normal 'day to day' SES calls.

It is only during a mutil-incident event (eg storm) that volunteers assist processing call receipt & dispatch.

I do not believe SES SCC has been converted to SACAD (could be wrong though).

Google says 2 hours minimum before backup arrives on scene.

Coober Pedy and Roxby Downs should be treated just like Whyalla. Isolated.

2 tankers and a BWC seems a bit light on for Coober...

It'd be worth making the brigade retained, with at least 3 tankers supported by a 13000L BWC.

Any one or two truck that goes out of town for a long distance RCR. There would always be two trucks back home.

From my understanding, Cooper Pedy is basically empty during summer. So how would they mann that many trucks ?

With the distance in SA maybe it just needs to be accepted you cant have a truck everytime.

I was reading about the new fire truck on http://www.fire.nsw.gov.au/news.php?news=2075 and noticed that 'NSW Fire Brigade' have now changed their name to 'NSW Fire & Rescue'.

I also noticed that their full-time fire fighter recruitment closes in two days.

Just interesting....

"Adelaide Fire Strath 34P"
"Send Strath 34P"
"Strath 34P mobile incident 81"
"Roger, Strath 34P, Adelaide Fire Out"

Just as easy?

well, it's Thursday morning, & so far the sky hasn't fallen nor the world ended.

However, my lawn still needs mowing, and the floors vacuuming.
So I therefore declare SACAD to be an abject failure.

so assuming they were sent.....no mobile call, no arrival call....but no default to the next suitable resource....SACAD still fails

I don't think a "..next suitable response.." exists to this type of incident. Some things are best left alone & walk away shaking the head.

\\ Roll on in-cab data terminals.

Ive been peddling the idea of smartphones in all appliances.
Instant GPS for AVL [vehicle location] and whack in an app to make it receive events, generate maps and directions and send status updates... could even do voice requests.

A system based on APRS was also mentioned to some people about 12 months ago. Got no interest from hierarchy.

More volunteers traveling from different organisations tomorrow for the weekend.

Lots of transport and other duties is done by volunteers. Personally, no issues from me to keep paid staff doing the job they are paid to do & giving the volunteer the experience or trip.

How much weight (full water & equipped) should this type of vehicle be ?
That could affect your stowage plan & take off speed.
