Hypotheticals / Re: Structure Fire Entanglement Hazard
« on: May 31, 2011, 02:54:52 PM »
I think it is a fair question to ask a question and get a proper answer. Rather than take a dig at eh CFS for not having much of a RIT plan how about suggesting what brigades can do with what is currently available to them.

Unfortunately for multiple reasons we haven’t considered RIT a high priority to allocate resources to implement. Rightly or wrongly this is the fact and what Ideas can you offer other Fire-fighters to improve the status qou

Stop slagging of at each other.

unfknblvable  would you care to pleas explain yourself? It doesn;t take much to cause cables to drop from a cealing and i am sure it can happen well before the structure is unsafe.

Numbers, As for tools in my pockets it is usally the whole radiant heat on a metal tool not that this has ever been an issue for me.

We probably lack in both areas..

I have done check installed fire saftey systems and it isn't to bad.

If we were to train the volly firefighters to a good level of  training what would be the key urban skills? and yoh have a max of 2 weekends per year per person. ( i jsut want to get beyond the standard thoughts on SAFf)

Fire Fighter Training / the training CFS misses
« on: May 10, 2011, 02:00:11 PM »
In the thread in "hypotheticals" there is much discussion about the fact we aren’t trained to get out of entanglements in burning buildings.  I agree with this but I had a discussion with a Lt in my brigade who claimed that we missed bushfire training and that lots of us would have no idea what to do in a really bad fire. There is truth to that.

I then asked how do you train people to fight bushfire and the answer I got started with “well I used to light amazing burn offs but now I am not allowed to any more …….”
So has CFS neglected rural/bushfire training and if so how should we train for rural fire fighting?

Please keep this thread for rural firefighting we can start another one for otehr skill sets.

Well i have noting in my normal gear that would help me. mainly because i am not one to put my own $$ into buying cool knives and tools to be carried on the person. Not to mention tools carried on the person seem to be generally discouraged in CFS.

Well everyone has stated what i would do. but as for the training issue.

I would propose that CFS doesn't train to think beyond the straight and narrow. eg why don't we learn on our BA course to start grabong axes, haligans and other tools to be ready. it is jsut Get ba set and hose and guideline...

All Equipment discussion / Re: Standard Trucks

yeah Darcy that would work as well.

So since we have specified what stowage we would like lets look at the 34p which hasn't really changed much since CFS has been building them. Is this "standard" enough between builds etc?

Good thoughts, I am with numbers on reducing the number of filler lengths.

however about the Rural trucks carrying 4x 64 just th throw it out there do they really need that ? yes the more rural R1 and  lofty rangers probably do but out on the flatlands? members i have spoken to out there have jaws drop to the floor when i say i would like 10 lengths of layflat on my truck. ( atm i am outvoted on this)

All Equipment discussion / Standard Trucks
« on: March 29, 2011, 01:56:26 PM »
Of late I have found myself involved in discussions about appliances a bit. The frequent occurance is that people want to see Standardisation so it is it easier to work and you can always find equipment on other brigades appliances.

What do you think?

What level of standardisation do you want or not want? is it just that hoses are stored on the right had side or should we all have the same Trucks?

Should we take a leaf out of the MFS and FRNSW appliance style where they are much the same each year but do incorporate new technology and improvements?

Oh ok Teddy I was a bit lost on the previous conversation about how degrees teach you facts and the the ability to learn more often than the ability to do a certain task in certain situations.

mine was a classic case of this

Do you think that the Way qualifications these days are seeming to become more important due to liability issues is distorting the way new members and staff are being treated and or the new staff's expectations of the job and role?

It is common sense for the comercial provider. They need to protect themselves.

in saying that i think food storage is an important issue that we probably don't pay enough atytention to, i remember the Cheese in the sandwiches on KI going really funny by lunch time...

In my not so humble opinion (for those that know me) - there are very few professions where you can't do what you studied for once you finish.

Is this right? don;t you mean Can?

East Torrens have a few members who have somewhat home made trailers that are rather capable  of feeding alot of people.

Hypotheticals / Re: Which do you save ?
« on: February 16, 2011, 01:46:39 PM »
So some quick maths $1 mil of grain and lets jsut say FED1 wheat will be about 4500mt so pretty tiny compared to some piles.  It wouldn;t take much do defend that.

As others have said the grain storage ofen has mineral earth around it.

I would save the houses simply because the houses are the community, people live there if they can't live there the town will suffer and perhaps cease to exist. 1 very empy grain bunker is pretty small compared to loosing a township.

And if you are a certain SA senator you will may the multinationals pay  :-P  :-D :-D

Country Fire Service / Re: SFEC - Training
« on: February 14, 2011, 12:13:55 PM »
i think we all agree it is in a bad state at the moment. However we do need to ration out the courses and SFEC is currently the only way to do this.

other wise every brigade could claim that they don't have the crew etc and how would you prioritise the allocation of courses?

And although the CFS guys may have been confused in the paging format it also puts more info onto one page which is nice

SAMFS / Re: Gawler covering Kapunda

So what would happen in the mt barker or Murray bridge, Pt Agusta etc  case?  How far are MFS wiling to sent their trucks before using more local resources.

And what realistically would happen and it ended up in a court room where it was discovered that closer CFS resouces were not used "because it is MFS area".

I know MFS resources garuntee a truck and crew etc And i thinhk there are plenty of otehr reasons that using MFS for alarms is better than pulling CFS away from work etc. But Closest appliances should be going. upon further study of map Nuri  could even be added to my list.

SAMFS / Re: Gawler covering Kapunda
« on: February 02, 2011, 08:21:02 AM »
But this is exactyl the reason that the whole closest most appropriate system needs to be held to.

the clostest 2 appliances ie respons for an alarm are kapunda CFS and MFS. then I would assume Roseworthy or hamley bridge CFS, Both of these brigades which are able to respond to AFAs.

If MFS use MFS in their area does that mean if there is a red truck in say for example Mt Barker MFS station they will not respond LittleHampton CFS or Hahndorf but call 441 or something from town ?  That is a hypothetical i know but lets close all firestations and just sent trucks from wakefield st
