1. Why pay some one when they are doing it for free anyway
2. In revieiw I believe as it is shame that policy and guidelines are tied to these course as reviews could happen thick and fast
3. Waiting, Waiting  :? but as zipply said dumbarse firefighting 1 I know this may sound off thread but we are slowly loosing the practical skills and replacing it by knowledge so it will be intersting to know if our future fireies know how to fight a fire
4. As wombat34 said it all depands but really the service should have a definition of what size each appliance should be used for in the world of standard non standad appliances
5. can't find one either - maybe that CFSVA should take that up rather than go for the money

we are still talking about a document that may or may not exist. Well my money is on it doesn't exist.

As we would sure have a GO who is part of this forum with the document and they may or may not have a available to them a scanner that would allow them scan and post the document concerned.

If they are going to be putting more on the red helmets guess what logic or in the CFS case fuzzy logic tells me that yellow helmets will be getting a lot more piled on top of them. I be sticking to what I have got.

Quiet please.

Hang on can you hear it can you I think i can

Yes I can hear it now

That right the sound of Dad's Army

Yes the urban brigade are high vis brigades and we look like a mob of misfits good one to whoever the that twat is. mind you we got the mix and maybe match down pat out in the rural areas just as bad. I know from my own experience that I have seen members turn up in everything from new two piece to the one piece all on the same truck. Nothing like a bit of (in) consistency in our high vis fires

I hope the call is still up to the individual as they know what they feel comfortable with and dare I say it some of us do become accustomed to the dangers (an that a  :? )

If you turn up and a FF then I can't see any problems as some of us older farts can sit bit and let the young ones gain some experience but as mike said it is up to the OIC at the station at that that time as sometimes they have your best interests at heart even though it hard to see.

Simple answer to the problem is start all over again. Don't both consulting with group as they are just protect themselves start with the Brigades as they know who are like minded in their ways.

In fact the CFS may already have the data in terms of those incident statistics so they have a tool to confirm what the brigade say.

BUT this is the biggie so floating the nice idea and now provide the real facts rather than the hot air blah blah blah. If you say you are going to do it then do it. We  don't need any more hot plasters as we have plenty of them called politicians!

Pump rescue you got it the booklets a joke and when apply for a change don't expect it.

I know of one brigade where the GO did not even read it and nearly admitted that he new nonthing about the Brigade threats. He knocked it back on the basis that no justification could be made even though they are on a main highway with no assistance for up to an hour if not more. I must admit I just can't remember what they applied for but it was something that is not out of he norm.

Why do we have a booklet that is based on rural fires and structures when it is well known that we attend things other than those types of incidents a majority of the time. I thinks our world has moved on from the 80's in many ways

I  was at a training course and one of the participants and the instructors were discussing that the RC has gone on leave again for four weeks. Apparently this is not the first time that the RC has been away on leave with having four weeks in July and other bouts of leave through out the year. What I thought was strange was how one of the instructors said that the RC had cleaned out his office. it looks like we maybe loosing another long terms and committed staff embers from a region.

Relying on a polly to fix it and the last time a polly fixes something other than an election is when.

as my Father always tell me there are no problems only solutions. About time the CFS stood up and made some noise if this true. I remember reading in a flyer that went around work that a site leader wanted us all to be serfs to our clients. That type of thinking shows how outdated some of the thinking in the public service. Unfortunately to many government departments subscribe to this type of medieval thinking, maybe a UFU action in the ranks will give the service a degree of creditability more so than will that other group (the VA).

If this is the case does this means that volunteers will be able to join considering how large the staff of the service is to give the UFU arguments more creditability when negiotating with mindless wonders of the government

Or they pull a repaired one from the pile and code that and send it to you.

Just as a side note, I see Mylor have managed to get themselves back onto the Orange network......funnily enough whilst they were on the GRN like everyone else they were still turning out.

Sorry to break it to you guys; to many in my local group have been getting pagers back that were cloned from other brigades as they did not do the cloning properly and they kept going off for the original brigades test and alert paging

Bill, I 2 was also at the regional training meeting and the information that was given out was mainly concerned at ladders and working from ladders. It is my understanding that we (the service)are compliant in regards to this training were the CFS consulted with BHP due to high safety standards which we met.

Confine space is something I would of believed came under the banner of SES. By the way for those who don't know the star force is moving away as a rescue group to that of a more of police special squad

I spoke to work mate of mine who has just come back from working on the west coast as a driller. Word is that a brigade has got out of favour with the cops who sub lease a shed which they lease themselves as the building belongs to another company. If the two can't resolve the differences then their truck will go and nd they will mean no SAPOL or SAAS or SES or CFS at all for that town. Reason given is that they can't afford to build in that region a new station they can only do 2 a year  :x

it looks like some places in SA are looked after really well by the sate budget

SA Firefighter General / Re: Pager shortage
« on: May 28, 2009, 01:05:28 PM »
I suspect that the phone tree that mallee has is like our where the group decided that only a limited number of members on the Brigades can have access to alerts e.g. five. If it comes through the pagers or alters they ring so many members to get the info out there and to find out who can be the crew. SMS would be sent by one key person in the  Brigade who was part of the original notification so that it does not become a part of the a chinese whisper responce.

$11965 Per Brigade Per Annum...Average, to utilise $5.6 million on 468 brigades.  Very unrealistic figure...but interesting enough.

The Brigade that I am from  has only a budget on $3500 or $125 per member ncluding all the service that go into providing that service. Welcome to region 6

Country Fire Service / Re: Training frequency
« on: March 03, 2009, 02:45:40 PM »
For those who are or aspiring to be Brigade Captains there is a legislative requirement on two accounts that need to show that the members of a brigade are operationally competent and that training records are being maintained. If an accident does occur it will be the  Brigade Captain who will get asked the questions and given the task of rectifying the problem.

Training for the sake of training is not needed but training for the ensuring that members are safe and competent is needed. At an incident we are members of a team and we are only good as they say as the weakest link in a chain. I would like to think that it is not myself or one of my fellow members of the Brigade who is deemed to be the weekest link.

Country Fire Service / Re: GRN RADIO'S
« on: February 05, 2009, 02:45:56 PM »
The concept of a captains radio maybe a good idea for some Brigades rather than something for all Brigades. From experience the idea of captains having a radio so that they can monitor the incident from a distance is a bit of pain in the neck. If they can't make it to the incident then don't both monitoring the incident as it already been said before trust those on the ground to make the right decision. If they can't do the job then all I can say is look at the way you do your training and how you pass knowledge on so they are capable in doing the job.

To add a different flavour to the VHF and GRN argument. In the more remote parts of SA where trucks can drive for significant distance to an incident why not consider bring back the HF radio maybe a bit antiquated but they certainly worked well in these areas.

As we discuss the urban rural interface those of you who keep an eye on the Government notices would of seen today that two western area Brigades have been disolved but a new Brigade has been established in new location also in the west.

Even though the media portray economic gloom and doom we need to be mindful of how rural towns are changing. I can only hope that the CFS will take this opportunity to eat away the Dad's army badge that can be found out on the margins of the good earth.

let crck open that DVD of the complete seris of DAD's Army to motivate our selves for today

Apart from using beaters and yellow beacons, is there anything wrong with this? CFS are already trying to streamline the BFF1 Package into a quick Rural Firefighting 101, moreso than it already is (if thats possible), if people only want to deal with rural incidents, then give them a 34, some hose, some lvl 1 gear and let them go wild!

And you wonder why they see us as Dad's Army service with comments like that one. The worse thing about it it's so true. :-(

To be fair the one size fits all would surely have to be sinking back into the abyss that it came from and derves to go.

I don't see the problem in having a peri-urban service maybe as a rural service we can get rid of some of the quaint ideas that we have for rural appliance like a 14 at Glendambo yes it might resolve a crewing problems but what happens when it it out of water in 3 minutes at a car fire. Yes 14's are good in the hilly terrain but as Zippy described as the 34's being sent to the more remote areas and some configuration for areas where brigades are closer to each other.

20
Play nice as all Brigades can have crewing troubles

There maybe no BIM for the Gerald Community as that part of the state can have large fire like the bookmark fires a few years ago.

Change Management its called ;)

Hang on there Zippy don't paint all rural / isolated Brigades as something as dinosaurs that still do it the old way and don't adapt to change. Some of us out here in the sticks thrive on changing and improving things for the Brigade and the community so that we can provide the best possible service to the community that we serve.

Three Fire brigades will be the wrong way to go.

Spot on no need for three services then again the Volunteer is still sitting next to me waiting for me to read when I get boared here at work so I really can't comment till I read the article in question.

Can't wait for a 34P to turn up on our  Brigade door step BTW we still do have the old towns hook up trailer set as a back up as some people love their old quaint ideas.

The current emphasis within SES is for long sleeve shirts & sleeves on overalls to be worn down. Thus giving the arms more sun protection & scratch protection from abrasion.

Good call Bajdas and great comparison.

I was on a land search with with a mixed crews of both CFS and SES one CFS Brigade came with all members in 2 piece pants, long sleeved riggers shirt and terry toweling hat. The shirts were all the same and Brigade issued. It gave a very professional look by both services.

Yes Badjas the CFS crew certainly had a small work out that day doing a land search.
