Country Fire Service / Re: New paging layout
« on: July 16, 2007, 06:01:40 PM »
littlejohn - surely you can remember a few number codes for differant brigades?

Without going into the unreliability of my memory, there are 22 brigades in the group and two control centres (it is essentially two large groups stuck together . . . thanks to council mergers etc and don't get me started on the practicality of the whole thing!).

But beyond the annoying codes only, and daily inc info + date at the start, plus the map details inevitably = 0, (in other words a bunch of superfluous information) the info is (in the pages I've received) generally quite ambiguous.

As Pip points out, we were told we'd stick with Airpro.

So, who do I direct feedback to? I know the group is annoyed & they'll be making a noise about it. I'd like to add a bit of volume. I'll fish back through the correspondence and see if someone invited comments.

End rant.

Country Fire Service / New paging layout
« on: July 16, 2007, 02:24:43 PM »
Does anyone think the new layout to pager messages makes them a waste of time as a source of meaningful information?

I'm waiting for a law to be passed preventing the use of mobile phones & pagers while driving a vehicle.

We may as well revert to 'respond to station'. Pager acknowledgments have become a matter of calling Adelaide fire and asking 'who have you paged, and where are they going?'

78
Actually littlejohn only Kalangadoo was dispatched . . . . . .

Robert, Millicent Rescue was also paged (which created confusion with Comms, as the accident was in Penola's area), but they were stop-called enroute after your crew confirmed no entrapments.

I understand SAPOL spent some time trying to track down the driver, who was nowhere to be found.

. . . . it was a good message  :-) . . . .

What exactly consitutes a bad message?

The poor comms brigade took five mintues to figure out which brigades had been paged (same message sent to a couple of brigades). By the time they put their glasses on, fished out the MFS appliance code list and . . . BINGO!

Does anyone else think the page could be laid out a little more clearly, possibly:

Yes this has been on the cards for a long time but cfs have finally realised that they better tell a few brigades about this before trucks start calling SOC aqnd nobody answers...

I assume we'll still be able to get someone on our regional talkgroup?!

For those of us who are unlikely to hear anything officially until Christmas (either this, or the next one), any of you who have been to a briefing etc who could provide info on what it means to we ff's would be appreciated.

ie from our perspective, will the service & operations at the other end of the radio continue to operate as it has to date, or will there be some changes in protocol, access, ??.

I've heard a rumour that such a process exists. Am I the only one who's not been through it?

Do all (other) brigades go through it? If so, is there a manual of some sort - obtainable from group or region? Is it a worthwhile process, or full of more bureaucratic bs?

Some include

Auspine
Green Triangle Forest Products
Timbercorp
ITC ( i think)

ITC = yes, part of Wattle Range group.

Timbercorp = no. They put slip-ons on their utes. Some have been CFS/CFA trained, but are not a brigade & don't seem to have really regisitered their existence with the CFS. They are also instructed by their hierarchy not to fight a fire unless it's on Timbercorp land (for insurance purposes).

The biggest problem I see with these vehicles if the foot room in the back seat. . .

A real shortcoming of dual cabs to date.

The new Hiluxs are a hell of a lot better though. They're no cruiser/patrol wagon, but they've come a long way. Not sure about the new navaras & tritons.

In other words, it now seems possible to have a logistics dual cab capable of sticking 5 crew in for a reasonable drive

Busted arse farmer. Essentially I work for myself.

If I'm in the middle of stock work, or something I can't get out of easily I don't go. But it's at my discretion & up to me to ensure what needs to get done is done. Fortunately most days I can get away as that's when we tend to be short of crew.

Letters are a good idea. We were going to get everyone to bring along something from work (sandwich board, sign, or whatever identified their employer, take a pic & the local rag was going to write a story thanking the businesses. Hasn't happened, but letters can be done quickly & easily.

And they can be a lot more personal . . . "thankyou for allowing Bob to leave work during the day to attend CFS/SES callouts. He's a valuable part of our crew . . . ". Everybody gets a warm fuzzy.

Well done Blue, awesome effort.

It's great to see someone taking the effort to organise such a training day, much less getting so many agencies involved.

Thanks for sharing the details too.

If nothing else, it would have been fun to watch me line dancing and doing muscle poses in a gas tight suit.

Now if I knew that was going on, I would have put aside all other committments and braved Mt Gambier.

Has anyone seen the report done last year (or possibly this year) on the cost of volunteering? I beleive it covered all (or most) services nationally.

Summary = those who are employed wear a cost of $1679pa (excluding any costs to employer).
Self employed people average $3282pa, and the retired end of town incur $687pa.

These costs are made up of both cash & in-kind contributions. I haven't been bothered to read whether or not that includes time (I don't think it does).

Yeah, come and see Blue dressed in a gas tight suit...

Does that mean you can't even fart?
Or you turn green when you do?

G D you monkey, you jinxed us.

We've been pretty quiet for the last couple of months. Almost ready to conduct the ancient PPE resurection ceremony. No sooner had the gear been crucified on a barbed wire fence, hose at the ready, when the pager went off.

Two jobs today. Not sure of the tally as yet though.

Some of them never went anywhere, if you know where to look they have been there the whole time.

Can someone create a secret code & share it with those of us on the outer, so we know where to find the less advertised sites??

Nothing so devious Footy!

I just assumed that other people would have (and supply) worthwhile pics, but it sounds like we've all made the same assumption.

For lack of pics, or lack of people willing to buy the calendar?

If it's for lack of pictures, sing out. I'll send a cd to you. I don't think there's anything too flash there, but you might get one or two adequate photos off it.

what does the curing mean?

Curing = how dry the grass/vegetation is.

At a guess they'd use the Dry Matter percentage (I stress it's a guess, because I can't be bothered looking up the reference document).

Green grass at this time of the year has a DM = ~ 20%. Dry grass in late summer DM = ~ 90-100%.

Is there a reason the forum clock is two and a half hours ahead of me?

It's not often I get confused about whether it's today, tomorrow, or yesterday, but this seems to be doing it for me!

Not any more. That website says:

Sounds like there's potential for quite a can of worms.

I wonder if it will result in an emotional but il-informed minority having a significant affect on the fire management practices in this state?

Is it really a good way to make decisions? The most annoying committees are those which have either either too many people, or misinformed people on them. Damn near impossible to reach decisions in reasonable time.
Why on earth would you want what amounts to a committee spanning the state?

Don't spose we'll get any worthwhile decisions out of it any time soon.
