Incident Operations / Re: explosion/hazmat at williamstown
« on: February 02, 2007, 10:17:58 PM »
Was uncomfortable watching the Aussie lose the cricket..

Unfortunately just one of those things that comes with the job..  :-)

The Aussies lost deliberately, they felt so sorry for the poms they had to let them win one game against them this summer.
Anyway back to the topic, its one of those things you don't really know before you roll if your only going to be doing external attack. In this case would have been good to know, would have picked my nomex to wear hands down.

Fire Fighter Training / Re: radio operator training materials?
« on: February 02, 2007, 06:14:08 PM »
A handy way of getting new operators or f/fighters trained in radio or giving sitreps is when you do any little exercise or training, make it as real as possible, ie give arrival messages, BAs in use, what your doing to the car if your doing RCR etc, gives them good practice at getting sitreps direct and to the point and lets radio operators becometrained in whats coming, ie arrival sitreps they know what info is required in case the IC forgets something.

As in when does that happen or when did we try it?

Sorry, yeah when was it tried and what was the appliance (or more importantly the pump).

The guys tried it at a large shopping centre, had 5 hydrants going (but only with 1 line of each) and did pressure tests and the lowest pressure was 580kpa. I think the shopping centre in question has high mains pressure as is, so that could have helped. The appliance was a 24P special.

Dont worry guys i aint giving up just yet as ARA Jobs are gonna help me i've got an appointment to participate in something called a Work Ready Group next Friday hopefully they will be able to find me a job where i can use my fire fighting

If you are looking for a some work where you can use your firefighting, you could contact your local National sparks office, they are always looking for guys to be employed through westaff, you get called in for burnoffs, big fires, taskforces etc, it could be a good stepping stone for a seasonal job next fire season.

Just tell him to remember your face when his house is burning down, cause he might not see that face when its on fire if he doesnt stop being such a f/wit.

You must remember that this whole post is about burnover training, if you are at a fire that is slow moving, no wind and on flat ground you are most probably going to be in conditions that will lead to burnover, so yeah go in and chase it, but we are talking burnover, you don't go chasing fires that are moving fast with high winds or on sloping ground.

They don't seem to be to keen to accept things like BA,RCR,HAZMAT. Which if the training that has been done are the same modules that the cfs delivery they have no option but to accept them.

Well i havent done CFB but certainly know better than to flood a place for a small fire. Basic firefighting skills...

It is, but some people can get a little excited when they seem flames. Ive been to many fires where the first arriving trucks have caused more water damage than the fire would have ever done.

I disagree... If you're working your way along the flank of a fire you can easily use 3-4 lengths while still having safe burnt ground nearby...  3-4 lengths to simply get to the fire is a different matter though... Is that what you mean?

Thats a better way of putting it.

Maybe we should stick a big deadman zone sticker next to it!!! :-D

It can also be a case of the caller information as to why CFS/MFS dont get responded.

Well our GO said if we use more than 2 lenghts of hose he will come up and cut the 3 hose.
Correct, using anymore than that is stupid, they are 30mtr lenghts the only time you would use 3-4 lengths is to mop up whilst making an edge safe ie 100mtr blackout and defiantly not during direct attack on a fire, you have a death wish chasing a fire that far into the scrub.

If this training is Nat Acc. they have no option but to accept it, as long as it is within the same package. There are lots of cases where cfs has not been accepting these and they are identical.

Maybe your not Jasec....

but multi storey schools and hospitals, as well as large shopping centres and nursing homes are huge urban risks....

admittedly we are not talking about 10 storey buildings, but still....

They are huge risks, but these all have boosters that can be boosted fine with 24/34Ps, and yes that is with multiple(5 to 6) hydrants going at once with the hydrants putting out 600-700 KPA, and in these days of CFB anyone knows(well those that have done the course) that you don't need hundreds of litres of water coming out your hose at 1000kpa to put a fire out.
I just know that in some brigades situations that pushing for or just receiving a 2WD pumper is not in the best interests of the brigade, due to the fact that they could find there trucks turning red before they know it.

Its about time that some brigade's wake up and look at your risk some urban brigade's are just that URBAN and so there is no need to take ya pumper into the scrub as you have a rural appliances to do that....

I agree, but some brigades have such a big rural risk as well they need 2 4WD appliances, if you gave all the EMA brigades type2 pumpers and a standard 24/34, what happens if your group has a big rural job there goes your 24/34. In a group like Mawson if  H/V, M/V and Seaford all had 2WD pumpers when Mt Bold went up They would have been with out a single 4WD appliance, in short basically no fire cover for the whole southern end of Onka Gorge. The new appliances that are coming out are more than adequate for what most of our urban risks are, lets face it we are not dealing with city CBD buildings.

one thing that I didn't get taught at burn over training that has occurred to me now is that it isn't uncommon to be on 5 to 10 lengths of lay flat away from the truck. Chances are you wont hear the yelp and if you do it is any ware from 2-20 min walk to the truck thought scrub and goat country. not to mention that the conditions at the truck could be very different that the conditions at the end of the hose.

Id be asking some serious question about the decision making of your officer, sector comm, or strike team leader if they are putting you 5-10 hose lengths away from the truck in situation where a REAL burnover might happen. :?
