SASES / Re: curious about level of radio traffic

care to share this news about new SES appliance numbering?

It is not new SES numbering each unit has a block of numbers eg Sturt has 201-205,Metro South 331-335 etc. These numbers have been around for years

While SES has used numbers before as SA Firey said, this is a new system that is coming out that will bring it more in line with the CFS/MFS callsign system.

It will be Unit Name followed by a two digit number based on what the appliance does. For example:
2wd cars that are not trucks or RCR are 2x
4wds that are not trucks or RCR are 4x
RCR trucks are 9x
logistics appliances like the flatbeds are 7x
general rescue trucks, which is anything but logistics or RCR are 3x

So with my unit we have Adelaide Hills 40 for our 4WD light rescue (341) and Adelaide Hills 30 for the truck (342).

Thats the basic idea of whats going on, its still at draft stage but they want to go live with it in September last I heard.

How do you determine if your mobile telephone is affected by the CDMA shutdown ?
Does a website exist where you can look up your mobile model number to see if it is affected ?

General rule of thumb, if it takes a SIM card you dont need to worry as its not on CDMA.

So the Nokia 1100 you have will be fine.

Sorry to bring up old topic..
The new Nokia 6120 is out. RRP $589. From what we have seen ourselves is that it does pick up signal much better then the other handsets without the need of an exteral antenna. The boss was happily making calls from inside the door to his celler at Wistow.
Sometime in the next week or so will take it out Ashton, Basket Range, Cherry Gully areas to check out the usual blackspots around there.
If there is anywhere else, within reason, in the Adelaide Hills let me know and will add it to my road trip.

The Telstra/ZTE 158 should be out mid to late August.

Its fine to send people away if you can spare them. But if you cant shouldnt they stay?
For example Adelaide Hills SES got a job to Milang the other day...

That reason ADH was sent to Milang had nothing to do with crews in NSW as the local unit only had one member on the task force.

Yes the CDMA network is being shut down progressively but it will not be fully turned off until 28th February 2008.

The towers that have stated to be shut off are those that are covered by others in the area.. for example say there are CDMA towers in Stirling, Mylor, Aldgate and Bridgewater the tower in Aldgate has its coverage covered the other surrounding towers so its turned off.

This is not new, they have been turning off excess towers for awhile now and 90% of the time it doesn't cause any issues other then maybe a 'bar' less or you might get a few more failed calls. For those that don't know, its mobiles work a lil like the GRN - if all the cells on the tower are in use you get a busy/call failed result. Also as was mentioned there are techies working on the towers in the area, depending on what they are doing they may have had to turn it off while doing something there but that shouldn't be for very long..

NextG coverage is constantly improving - hence there are no printed coverage maps. As CDMA is shut off its removing the interference that is causing a number of issues with the new network as both are very close in terms of frequency. Also it is handset dependent, with NextG handsets on the market now if signal is important look at the LG TU500/550, IMATE JASJAM, and possibly the new Samsung A801 although we haven't had alot of feedback on the A801 yet (AVOID the Telstra(ZTE)F150/F151/F850/F851!!!!). This comes from customer feedback I have received working in a Telstra Shop.

As Darius said, do not go and buy new handsets to replace the CDMA handsets until HQ/Region have advised. Key Services SA - the Telstra dept that look after CFS are in the final stages of working out the deal for CFS and its about to be signed off if CFS HQ are happy. I do not have a time frame for this to happen but it is coming. You can replace GSM/3G handsets with a NextG handset without an issue from any Telstra Shop as all that happens is we add some codes to the account and possibly give you a new sim card.

Can I ask why everyone is waiting for the Nokia? It wont be as simple and easy to use as alot of people think it will be. If you get a chance check out how a Nokie N70/N80 or any of the Symbian based handsets.. they are rather different then the normal run-of-the-mill Nokia. And it will require new accessories for the majority of customers as things like the charging pin have changed size. These are the two main reasons I hear almost daily from people waiting for Nokia.

And as for the 'Must be a win situation for phone resellers' - not really it is just another type of handset, Telstra is taking a loss from the cancellation of the remainder of CDMA contracts.. mind you thats there budget not the stores.

Sorry for being such a long post but there is alot of misinformation out there.

... but she told us that they had researched and that it will be required in the future and that SAFECOM has purchased land...

Thats interesting seeing as SAFECOM has been looking for land to house the local SES unit and havent found anything yet. With land so hard to get in the area house the two - be it MFS or CFS with the SES on the same block so there is more money available to purchase.

Likewise..

We have recently had a change of leadership and with that has been a change in attitude towards the other local services, all for the better. But it takes a bit of retraining from both sides of what the can do and does and if there are problems, let it be known don't just sit on it until it becomes so big ministers get involved.

And I thought it was illegal for anyone to take action from a scanner ?

I had a phone call from one of the girls at the Advertiser when I called in a flooding job at the shopping center I work in. She seemed a little surprised when I started asking her how legal it was for her to be using my info from pager messages.

But the emergency numbers should be able to be called no matter what state the phone is in, provided there is power to it. Emergency numbers should be able to be dialed when PIN locked, Phone locked, PUKed, without SIM, keypad locked etc etc. So it wont matter if the keypad is on or not emergency numbers can still accidently be called.

The Push To Talk is on alot of phones, its just one of those things that is talked about if you ask about it or if it sounds useful with what you have told us.

Some of the ones that have it from memory are (carrier dependant):
Motorola V3x,
Nokia 6233, 5140i, 9300, 6255, N80, N70
I-Mate SP5, K-Jam, Jamin,
Sony Ericson W810i

Also note that calls made using PTT are charged, not free like a radio.. geez make it sound like a sales pitch dont I

Both CDMA and Next G run on about the same freq hence the same coverage.

This is not a unique freq and other countries use it... Rogers Wireless in Canada, Cingular in USA, both run it. Cingular has a customer base of 50 Million, and 10 other countries are currently looking at moving to a 3G 850 network. Sure on launch there is a limited range (and qantity) of handsets available but with an expected 40 on the market by end of next year, you wont need to worry about a lack of handsets for long.

Also most of the handsets currently out and comming out are dual 3G band and tri or quad GSM band phones. From memory there is something like one or two countries that a dual 3G/quad GSM band handset wouldnt work.

Signal is the same and better in some spots. Alot of Telstra Shop staff have been out driving over the last few days checking out the signal and known blackspots. All in all the coverage is fantastic, there is the odd area that is still abit iffy but they are being logged and will be looked at by the techs.

And yes, I do work in a Telstra Shop, and I have no problems in recommending Next G to the CFS/SES.. only problem is there is no nonflip phone on the market yet. How long do you think a flip phone would last out on a job with us?

NextG (3G 850mhz) is the way to go. Although limited handsets are out at the momment its where its all heading. Most stores have very little if any CDMA stock on hand anymore.

And to reiterate the above point, 3G 2100mhz phones will not work on the NextG 850mhz network.moment

That job was a car vs tree. No police car involved but they were travelling behind vehicle and witness it. It was initially called in as a departmental accident but that was cleared up later.

Why don't you guys like taking stop calls from us?

Depends on what the job is. Most we will take the stop and go home, but others we will still go and say hello without lights and sirens going. Reason for this is because we have been caught out before. We had a stop call for a building impact saying only a fence had been knocked over, we where around the corner so went and had a look to find that the building had been stuck and the wall had been pushed in. That my not be the best example but its the first I could think of.

But that may not be the reason why we rock up, some calls we only get the stop from MFS as we rock up on site even when you called it in 5 min before hand. Then there is the odd time when we have to drive past the job to get home so we might stop and say hi - sorry to the Brigdewater guys that my passanger buzzed when we pulled over last week.

What does the SES do to prepare the community?
Different levels of the SES do different things.. like CFS. Region level helps local government areas come up with flood and disaster responce plans, unit level give the odd talk or presentation to groups and so on.

What is VMR?
Volunteer Marine Rescue. They became part of the SES a few years back now. The primary role of them is to provide a marine search and rescue service to vessels in distress or vessels that require emergency assistance. Other tasks include vessel recovery and retrieval, medevac and assistance to Police and other government agencies. In the West Coast Region, they have established several limited coast marine radio stations staffed by SES/VMR Volunteers on a daily basis, monitoring the marine distress frequencies.

What is the Dropmaster course?
Learning how to drop things out the back of an aircraft. Could be used for food or med supplies to families in the middle of a flood area. That kind of thing. Its not a wide spread course.

Keep it ontopic

Do any members of the SES find themselvs responding to clean up treas on houses of people who are not responsible enough to keep their houses in proper condition? ie being a free garden clean up service.

With the new CAD system these types of calls are slowing getting weeded out. The odd one still gets to us. Normally what my unit it does if we get there and its a gardening service job is give them a list of numbers of people to call that will do the job, and leave.

PS. heard this morning SOCC tell Aldgate (tree down 7:49am) the SES don't take stop calls from other agencies.  Aldgate had cleared it up, stopped Adl Hills SES, and left the scene by 8:15am.  I thought an SES person on here said a while ago that wasn't the case?  Did they still turn up?  (I didn't hear a peep from the SES).

Our Unit Manager was onsite and gave us the stop call so we went home. If we get a stop call given to us it depends on what it is if we stop or continue following normal road rules to check it out. For example a tree down we would generally go home on a stop call where as a building impact we would go and check it out to play safe.

We are having issues with the CRD process at the momment in regards to what priority jobs are and who gets sent to what. A dog stuck on a log in a river should not be a P2 job, and a P1 like the Gorge Rd should have other units/ESOs responding as well else its a P2. Its all fun and games til something goes really bad.

Unless your silly nuff to do a full day stint or two

It can be hard work, but its filtered fun. I just hope that people at least wash their oranges first this time and dont look like the usual bag of crap.

Are we doing escort runs infront of the ambos again this year or have they given up on that idea?

Any chance of being sent a copy of the breif??
