The other problem with the Type 2s is they are only a medium pumper.  Whilst that's fine in most instances, there are areas that would benefit from a heavy pumper.

I don't necessarily believe that CFS need to design a new truck - there are plenty of decent heavy pumpers out there.  Choosing a tried and proven truck that is more suited to some of the needs of local areas would be a much better way to go.

The type 2 is not the be all and end all in modern pumpers.  I really like the look of some of the heavy pumpers that QRFS are building at the moment.  I haven't seen one in operation, but the specs and design looks good.

Another excellent read is Red Adair's biography.

Sorry, can't remember the name of it, I read it years ago.

True, but a lot of fleet options are quite limited by the budget we're given, though some don't make sense, best we can do is our job with what we have...

The actual fleet might be determined by budget, but the allocation of it seems to be determined by egotism and bias rather than anything tangible like response statistics or risk assessment.  This is not the way a fire service should be run!

Nothing is ever certain in the CFS, but that fleet would make the most sense...

Since when has any fleet decisions in the CFS made sense?

A lot of decisions have ranged from the bizarre to the preposterous.

Yeah, I'm not sure if they were the ones or not...

They were a similar design, though.

The rationale behind them not meeting standard was that between the pads you are still exposed to possible cuts if you touch something the wrong way.

I really don't know what the Australian Standard says.  You'd be best to contact Greg Stone or Corey Frazer at the training centre for more advice.

I'm not sure if it's that brand - but one of the new popular brands of rescue glove are not allowed as they don't meet the Australian Standard as they don't have enough kevlar in them.  This was discussed at a brigade upskill session.

Best check with the guys at the training centre before you start to make any decisions...

Country Fire Service / Re: New Members & Training
« on: April 09, 2007, 12:36:05 PM »
Slightly off-topic, but I think the biggest problem with regard to new recruits is how long it is taking to get police checks done.

My brigade has sent some in for potential recruits and they haven't been received back 3 months after submitting them.

I believe it is the rules that we are not allowed to start training them informally until the police check comes back.  I think (could be wrong) that this is because the captain or admin officer must sight the clearance before signing the membership book and without that submitted, the new recruit has no insurance, etc.

How are brigades meant to keep potential recruits interested if they aren't allowed to start doing anything because the red tape is taking far too long.

Don't get me wrong - I agree with the need for police checks to keep the wrong types out, but its just frustrating...

I was disgusted to see a pager message yesterday about a police officer who committed suicide - the message named the officer...

Someone needs to get their arse kicked for that.

Do you know if they will be offering the training for those who have already completed CFB?

Or will we have to do the CFB course again?  :-D

Hmm, as an outsider, would the reluctance to allow PBI Gold into Sturt Group have anything to do with the business interests of one of their deputies?

Agrees with firefrog.

Whilst the webpaging is generally reliable, there is no guarentee of service from it.  The system could be down and there is no indicator on the site that it is the case.  It also doesn't come up with an actual confirmation that the page has been sent.

One of the quickest/easiest ways to upgrade an incident, though, is to contact state headquarters (via phone or regional talkgroup) and get them to do it.  I've never had an issue with upgrading through them.

It seems to me, that what Mt Barker want they get

From what I've heard round the traps, Mt Barker hasn't had any say in any of their vehicle movements during the past few years...

This should be taken with a pinch of salt as it had gone through many people before I heard it, but their appliance numbers have dropped over those years...

Does any brigade really have any say in  what they do/don't get these days?  From what I've observed, most are getting told what happens and have very little say in what happens with their fleet...

Just a note on the photos - it's terribly poor form to post photos without crediting the photographer when they are not your own...

How about give kudos where they are due?

It will be interesting to see how the green uniforms handle wear and tear.

I don't like them now, but I can see them fading into a really horrible washed out colour very quickly which will be an even worse look...

Would be nice if the CFS would update us on the Fire Fighters condition.  We are all on the same team you know!

There may be other reasons that nothing has been released - like maybe the firie or his/her family don't want anymore said about it? Just speculating...

Agree with the above but not only EMA should have better appliances there are brigades covering multi billion dollar businesses with rural trucks.....

One could almost argue that areas with multi-billion dollar assets that are not EMA require the better appliances more, as they don't have the support of MFS near by...

I'd heard differently...
