Country Fire Service / Haves and have nots
« on: September 11, 2011, 09:39:47 AM »
I have been thinking that across the CFS there is alot of money that is in brigade accounts that doesn't do much other than collect interest. I may be wrong but my observations in CFS have discovered that there isn't much in the way of larger things that brigades are allowed to spend their money on.(we buy printers, t shirts perhaps etc)

What do you think of developing a system that enables brigades to buy more substantial things for themselves more in a less restricted fashion? some examples may include BA sets, another bay on a station.

is this fair? would it be good to free up this money?

Fire Fighter Training / the training CFS misses
« on: May 10, 2011, 02:00:11 PM »
In the thread in "hypotheticals" there is much discussion about the fact we aren’t trained to get out of entanglements in burning buildings.  I agree with this but I had a discussion with a Lt in my brigade who claimed that we missed bushfire training and that lots of us would have no idea what to do in a really bad fire. There is truth to that.

I then asked how do you train people to fight bushfire and the answer I got started with “well I used to light amazing burn offs but now I am not allowed to any more …….”
So has CFS neglected rural/bushfire training and if so how should we train for rural fire fighting?

Please keep this thread for rural firefighting we can start another one for otehr skill sets.

All Equipment discussion / Standard Trucks
« on: March 29, 2011, 01:56:26 PM »
Of late I have found myself involved in discussions about appliances a bit. The frequent occurance is that people want to see Standardisation so it is it easier to work and you can always find equipment on other brigades appliances.

What do you think?

What level of standardisation do you want or not want? is it just that hoses are stored on the right had side or should we all have the same Trucks?

Should we take a leaf out of the MFS and FRNSW appliance style where they are much the same each year but do incorporate new technology and improvements?

SAAS / Paramedical standards
« on: April 18, 2010, 09:55:06 PM »
There seems to be a lot of debate on here of late about new private medical providers. Are there any standards about how they operate or is it pretty much fair game and each company has to develop their own SOPs etc?

and  also what government regulation is on the industry?

All Equipment discussion / New appliances
« on: April 09, 2010, 01:23:49 PM »
Ok a few questions

Does anyone know anything about the new 14s similar to the booleroo build? is that the only 1 ?

I heard rumours that no more 34s are being built? seems odd to me could the person have meant 34p instead?

does this mean we are going back to 24 builds? I know there is a prototype being built but does anyone know any more?

thanks

SA Firefighter General / Emergency services at Public arranged events
« on: February 11, 2010, 10:08:47 AM »
There is some decent discussion going on in the SAAS board about who is going to do first aid at an event and what their qualifications are or should be. Reading that made be ask what about other services and events

With the recent or current hooha over the Stirling Christmas pagent and youths getting drunk and causing an issue i heard via some form of un official grape vine that SAPOL no longer want to do policing at public events similar to the pagent or the Norwood food and wine festival. My question is where should government services aka SAPOL, SAAS, CFS, MFS, SES draw the line between what they offer and do and where some form of private firm is hired?

Personally i think this type of work should be factored in to the services but it wouldn't be unreasonable for a fee to be factored in. I also have been told that the police tried to stop being involved at footy games in the past, and this failed.

Country Fire Service / What keeps you coming back?
« on: December 18, 2009, 09:54:51 AM »
Simple question, In short I am pretty much certain that people only hang around for the stuff they get for themselves. As we all enjoy something in CFS then there is a reason we hang around. What is it for you? and maybe it is possible to look at improving the bits we like which will help  recruit and retain.

SA Firefighter General / Responsibilites of the property owner
« on: September 19, 2009, 09:46:52 AM »
This has been mentioned in relation to the Kilburn fire and all the difficulties that MFS had there.

What is a reasonable amount of fire suppression systems for a firm to have? obviously something like a ship has to be rather self contained but something such as wingfield dump or a factory in the suburbs doesn't.

Personally I think the point of the fire brigade is that everyone doesn't need to have a personal fire truck but it is obviously in the interest of the firm to have good systems to be able to minimize potential damage, and i guess it may help with insurance aswell.

Country Fire Service / Recruitment being prevented by BFF1 length
« on: May 31, 2009, 11:41:55 PM »
There has been alot of discussion recently saying the length of BFF1 is preventing members from joining.
Do you think this is true if so why or why not?
And does anyone expect our numbers to noticeably increase if we altered BFF1 to a different format?

Country Fire Service / Vic deployment Q&A
« on: February 13, 2009, 08:43:22 AM »
Since i know some of you went to Vic and lent a hand i have a few questions for you all.

-Were the Vics any better at us in arranging a staging area and getting crews into and out of it to the fire promptly? that it both you guys/girls? and CFA.

- What were there appliances and gear like? could we learn anything from them?

- are there any major differences that you saw in the methods of firefighting used across the border?

- What would you recommend be done differently to make these deployments "theoretically" run smoother in the future?

If anyone else has questions feel free to add them BUT make sure this is only Q&A not a discussion about why and how. you can make a new thread for that.

thanks

All Equipment discussion / LEC vrs normal torch
« on: December 14, 2008, 02:35:41 PM »
I have found that most led lights i have used tend to always have a more blue soft light than conventional torches. ie the light doesn't manage to penetrate through the darkness much. This has been mainly in a camping situations and mainly mid range to low range hed lamps.

Does anyone have any experience with some of the new LED equipment on the cheaper end of the market?
