http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/victoria/firefighters-shot-at-during-siege-in-sunshine/story-e6frf7kx-1225902592428

SEVERAL shots were fired, including one at police, during an early-morning siege in Melbourne’s west today.

Firefighters were called to Second Ave, Sunshine for a factory fire while police were called to the same street for a distressed male.

Sunshine MFB senior station officer Ian Munro said firefighters were looking for the scene of the callout when they saw a man in front of the factory.

“We thought he was opening a gate,” Mr Munro said.

“He fired a shot in our presence

“I thought ‘We’re not hanging around here’.

“We did one resuscitation last night, I don’t want to start working on my own troops.”

Acting Insp Glenn Mayne said on arrival the fire brigade drove past the man and the police stopped with a view to having a conversation with him.

It was subsequently identified he was armed, likely with a rifle.

“Police disengaged, so they pulled away, and a short time later they were moving away (when) they heard a number of shots fired,’’ Insp Mayne said.

“Because of the fact there were other civilians in the street a second police vehicle had to drive back into the street with a view to moving those people away.

“At that stage a further shot was fired directly at police.’’

A 30-year-old Sunshine man was arrested and is assisting police with inquiries.

``We are very lucky that no one has been killed, lucky no one has been injured and it is good he has been arrested without any injury,’’ Insp Mayne said.

The police airwing, dog squad and special operations group were all involved in the drama which was resolved shortly before 7am.

Firefighters believe the man tried to set contents inside the factory alight.

SA Firefighter General / Rescue from heights.
« on: August 08, 2010, 11:53:05 AM »
Who is the best service to undertake a rescue from heights? Sapol (star), Samfs, CFS, SES?

why would mfs be better than star vice versus.

and why would you rely on a volunteer service over a full time (cfs. vs. mfs, or ses vs. star)

AN intoxicated teenager stole a 14-tonne fire engine and activated the emergency lights before eventually being pulled over in Sydney's Blue Mountains.

Police alleged the 16-year-old boy broke into a fire station at Lithgow and stole an Isuzu fire truck about 11.45pm on Friday.

He was pulled over a short time later by police and was breath tested, returning a positive reading of 0.045.

The teenager was issued a court attendance notice for novice range drink driving and other traffic matters.

He will be dealt with under the Young Offenders Act for the offences relating to breaking into the fire station and stealing the fire truck.

Country Fire Service / Booster Commisioning
« on: June 04, 2010, 11:17:54 AM »
Hi,

Quick question, Who does the booster commissioning in the country areas ie hills and country?

I know there are the fire companies that do the 3 or 6 year tests, but who does the commissioning test? Especially as some brigades pumpers wouldn't be able to support the flow/ pressure needed to get the pass at 1800kpa/ and the flow rate.

Surely the mets don't go outside of the metropolition areas as they wouldn't be the responding appliance.

In the hills face zone, hills proper and country areas there are huge comms towers and silos.

Who is responsible for resucing people off them? Do SASES or SACFS have a team that is trained for work at that heights?

Drove up near the hills near Belair and saw the tower there... can any cfs or ses personnell work at that heights??  :?

Who practises that type of rescue?

SA Firefighter General / Private Industry
« on: April 10, 2009, 07:31:12 PM »
Hi just interested whether any brigades have had interaction with the private industry, especially in regards to
sprinklers,
boosters,
dry pipe systems and
tank + pump + booster systems

all of which are now being installed in many hills and country areas.

Are any CFS brigades either urban or rural receiving flow reports for the hydrant flow tests?

Are any brigades being told of overhaul of system, in which the systems (any of the above plus others) are offline?

Have any brigades who have the ability to boost been shown how to boost a automatic monitor system?

Have any brigades talked to the servicing companies about information about how to read, use and understand the booster pumps that are located on site?

Just interested thats all...

SA Firefighter General / big white truck crash
« on: September 25, 2008, 10:11:41 PM »
Hey all,

I'm still a novice with all the fire trucks and associated stuff, but

I saw a brand new scania fire truck (like SAMFS, but white!!) that had been completely totalled... look like a truck vs. kangarooo or something big...

had "Total.... " couldn't read the rest on the back. (could it those filtered from total fire... btw they aren't in SA only NSW!, did some research on them 8-))
The truck was on back of low loader trailer heading towards north out of city to Pt Wakefield way

whos is it? cause it looked near new. had red, blue and amber lights... and a mining flag (orange) on 10ft pole.

pity was smashed to bits, i quite liked it :-)... Mr Ferguson... GIMME NOW!!!

Country Fire Service / Trainers
« on: August 25, 2008, 02:36:28 PM »
Hey all.

I did a course outside of the cfs courses, which i funded myself.

The trainer was the most qualified person for the course... but he was crap. I have done a similar course with someone who did not have a qualifications list as long as his arm but had done real life rescue and the course was twice as good and I got much better training...

I have friends who have done courses with a south australian company interstate  whos also a sacfs supplier and they told me they can remember the instructors telling the group how qualified they were... however they had never conducted a real rescue... only training...

wat are your thoughts boys and girls... is experienced trainer better than a course bunny (someone who does lots of courses... but thats all)
