Country Fire Service / Coronial findings
« on: December 03, 2007, 11:59:03 AM »
For you info....

the coroner will be in Port Lincoln on December 18th at 11am to hand down his findings....apparently it will take 30 mins.

Let's hope that what he has to say doesn't impact any further on our organisation than what the experience and process already has.

The findings will be available on the web 30 mins post his session

Country Fire Service / Post Deployment Stand down
« on: January 24, 2007, 12:43:23 PM »
I believe that the recommendations in relation to the 48hr exclusion from response post deployment needs to be clarified.

It might be something that is developed as a Group norm but I personally believe that if you have been away and had 2 or more shifts, stayed away from home and had a travelling component, the 48hrs should be mandatory....except in the case of an incident like black tuesday where obviously any relevant paperwork goes into the nearest shredder.

Country Fire Service / Weather Forecasts
« on: November 10, 2006, 10:18:48 AM »
We have a lot of problems with being able to get weather forecasts in reasonable timeframes...I understand that we have to provide on ground weather conditions first but it can take up to hours for us to get a forecast back...

Does anyone else have such issues??  :?

It makes it hard to plan not having the forecast to work with..

All Equipment discussion / DEH toys
« on: August 03, 2006, 01:53:10 PM »
One of our local DEH guys was telling me that he had just ordered a 150lt flame thrower (to be mounted on a 14) and a huge industrial leaf blower....some serious toys to use this season!

He said that the flame thrower was because the usual drip torch is often not enough to ignite some scrub areas...lucky I trust his judgement!

Do other areas have such exciting toys to play with?/

Country Fire Service / Weather impacts
« on: July 27, 2006, 12:53:17 PM »
During my evidence in the Black Tuesday coronial...I was alerted to some new weather research and events known as "dry slots".

this research finally made sense of the fire behaviour we witnessed.

It will be something that we need to consider with IMT and planning...

A dry slot has the ability to drop the RH from 20% to 3% and dry twigs 6mm in diameter in an hour..effectively creating explosive and unpredictable fire behaviour.

here's a link to more info..

In the last 6 years there has been 200+ occasions of this occuring..

Country Fire Service / Wearing of PPC
« on: April 13, 2006, 09:13:56 AM »
Do other brigades and more importantly officers have a constant uphill battle to get vollies to wear all of their PPC??

We went to a fire on Monday pm and I spent more time asking crew to don helmets that giving instruction on tasks....and more to the point, many other brigades were as slack..

I don't understand why there is such reluctance to wear the gear...it's for their own safety!!!!!!!   :x

Country Fire Service / Leave to appear
« on: April 03, 2006, 01:25:58 PM »
I have unfortunately been summoned to appear at the Black Tuesday Coronial.

I have mentioned to my manager on many occasions that I will be absent and am at the court's beck and call. I have no choice in the situation. I am expected to possibly be on the stand for up to 5 days.

I understand that this is a length of time that is unproductive for my employer. She cited our Emergency Response Policy in that it's only for an emergency that I can leave without penalty or have to take leave.

Does anyone think that it's reasonable/unreasonable that I am now expected to take leave to appear?

Country Fire Service / Deployment Uniforms
« on: October 12, 2005, 01:54:56 PM »
Ever since I went to Sydney in 2001, they have been trying to determine and issue a uniform for vollies to wear whilst travelling for deployments.

I remember thinking how inappropriate it was that some were wearing their yellows on the plane..over and what's worse BACK after a week of firefighting.

They can't seem to get past the colour issue...green, blue, taupe...I suppose it will take another deployment before they really do something...or arrange another committee to procrastinate about it.
