Country Fire Service / Re: Fewer volunteers join CFS ranks
« on: December 07, 2009, 08:11:13 AM »
I can see why the number of CFA volunteers have dropped as result of the Black Saturday fires due to half of them being traumatised from fighting those fires back in February but it is a real concern to see CFS numbers dwindle by 296 to 15,415  :-(

I know this is abit off the topic but having recently assisted DEH with mop up/patrol of a fire last week they are very thorough when to comes to mopping up and blacking out hotspots so while its fun to have a lil dig at them for one thing we must bear in mind they do a good job

[quoteRecuiting is easy get them through the door, make them feel welcome and then the problem comes that of retaining them. This maybe not so much of problem for the urban brigades but for the typical bushfire brigade it can be a bit problematic. Service trinkets are fine but maybe we shouldbe investing in other ways that volunteers can be apprecated and rewarded. Some times the organization is at odds with what would make good volunteer practice.][/quote]

I agree with you malleefire on the fact that recruitment of volunteers to bushfire brigades can be problematic especially for brigades who are non rcr and only get like between 8-15 calls a year

Plus i've got my 15 years service medal coming up in December 2010          (that includes cadet years too)

What is a reasonable amount of fire suppression systems for a firm to have? obviously something like a ship has to be rather self contained but something such as wingfield dump or a factory in the suburbs doesn't.

The reasonable amount of fire suppression systems for something like a mill, dump or factory is booster hydrants and fire hoses or a combination of both connected to a water supply enabling continuous supply of water

Personally I think the point of the fire brigade is that everyone doesn't need to have a personal fire truck but it is obviously in the interest of the firm to have good systems to be able to minimize potential damage, and i guess it may help with insurance aswell.

You'll find that not every industrial or commercial premises has their own fire appliance although it would pay for worksites both commerical and industrial to have their own on-site fire crews trained by CFS or MFS

don't hate on me cause i am new.  but i am looking into getting a fire fighting job in Australia.  as of right now i am a wildland fire fighter in California and need some change and Australia has all was been a place of intrest. so any help would be great

thank you

G'day Stewie welcome to the forums if you've got wildland fire fighting experience which is similar to rural and plantation fire fighting here in South Australia as well as Victoria

A good idea even though its abit late right now if you're planning to move to SA or Victoria within the next 6-12 months would be to sign up as a volunteer fire fighter with a local brigade then apply for seasonal fire fighting with the DEH,DSE or Forestry SA they normally ask for people around late August and early September every year

If the chainsaw doesnt work theres always an axe or wood splitter if both are sharp enough

« on: August 17, 2009, 10:34:35 AM »
Going back over your earlier posts justuk with the fire fighting qualifications you've got it shouldnt be too hard to get a job in another industry that does fire & rescue

A good idea would be to perhaps join a CFS brigade for starters and become a volunteer then apply for a job as an ESO at one of the major mines here in SA like Olympic Dam or Roxy Downs

Or if you are moving here before October-November maybe you should consider applying for a seasonal fire fighting job with Forestry SA or DEH when they start advertising for casual firies

Even secondary schools are having difficulty informing parents of the new SACE that affect their kids now. I have been to two parent information meetings recently at my son's Secondary School. The school is in a bushfire area that has experienced significant fires in the area in the last two years.

Being that the high school is in a bushfire prone area it would be a good idea to perhaps pressure the school staff into buying a 2 way radio or scanner so if in the event of a major fire they will know what is happening and be able to take measures to ensure safety of the students

Some interesting things so far the use of FIRE STATION sirens  why have CFA stoped using them answer pagers now did this not come up in the westcoast fires???

Lets hope that the CFA start allowing brigades with station sirens to activate them for every call out during day time hours whilst maintaining the pager system as the primary way to notify volunteers of fire calls

New pagers are being trialled...

I am sooo jealous of the brigade or brigades who get to trail these new pagers  :-P before the roll out of these new pagers begins

Even so Zippy new pagers would be good it doesnt matter if they tweak the intergraph software so we get CFSRES instead of Alert

As someone has said Victoria have 3 regional call centre's,so should we also have one in a regional area???

This kinda reminds me of back when SAAS had regional call centres before everything was centralised to Adelaide everytime an emergency call requiring CFS response went through any call centre a page would be sent out

SAAS: Respond ______ Station
      CFSRES

Too bad we cant go back to the regional call centres now  :-(

Fingers crossed the CFS gets this paging problem sorted out soon before the 2009/2010 fire season otherwise we'll more than likely have to resort to using station sirens to alert brigade members  :|

Or even better bring back the old fire phone system where each brigade had their own alerts number so if a fire was reported by a local all the phones would ring a distinct alert ring
