No mud slinging going on here, but as the person taking the notes the previous night I will back Camo up as the reponse when Kalanagadoo was about to go mobile was "with a crew of 2 1/2". Wasn't too sure who the half was and would hate to hazard a guess....  :-D

Must be because of all that help they give the CFS! He's just rubbing our noses in so we all get jealous (isn't that right Cam??) and come and join his brigade, what more could we want with all this "new" stuff! They probably got it all at a discount price from Bunnings after all those alarm call to there in the beginning

Pip and Bill have both said some things that I think is true for any organisation. It can be the way you go about recruiting, the way potential members are treated (sounds like a good idea to get you out to talk to these new ones Bill, would have made them see that an effort was being made on their behalf) Internal "stuff" can cause a lot of trouble and when it is a volunteer setup sometimes it is just not worth the hassle of having to deal with alsorts of problems. Expecially if you are made aware of them before you have even joined. I really can't see the point in spending money on advertising (and this applies for a lot of things) it really seems to be the word of mouth, making people feel welcome and being aware that it is volunteer, that people still have to work, deal with family and friends and just because maybe you live and breath for the CFS that not everyone feels the same way. Jumping all over someone because they haven't got to some call outs doesn't always work (you don't know what is happening with work and home to even know what they were up to) yes I know we might have a whinge amongst ourselves sometimes but being aware that other people do have lives is also very important

How about looking at what is getting rid of old members? Why have they left? And I agree it is being personally asked that seems to work well with a lot of brigades

On the news it said something about smoking a cigerette at the same time as well and that caused the problem (fuel, heat, burning)

I like the idea of the letters, sending a page out is only good if everyone has their pagers turned on (they might be off due to sickness work committements so therefore will not get that page) sending a text message (well I wont even go there as I have a real problem with work dealing with things via text messages - pick up the damn phone or send a letter)

Get's back to we are volunteers, we have a life, we have a job, we need to earn money, if we don't work we get no money and then life becomes hard. Some people are not around at certain times of the year due to work commitments (just because my car is in the driveway does not mean I was to slack to turn out, I might have worked the last 12 hours on afternoon/evening shift and now I am getting some important sleep to be able to do it again tomorrow so I have my pager turned off) There are also some people that will only ever be around during the summer as they are interested in helping the community fighting bush fires but are not wanting to get caught up in the rest of the stuff. Well that is there choice and boy are they handy over the summer, they don't need to be penalised because they don't want to go to VA's etc.
Too many people are interested in getting rid of so called dead wood without looking at reasons as to why they might not be around at certain times of the year and taking into account all the extra work that they have done over previous years.
How to get rid of a volunteer, never acknowledge the extra work that they might put in (whether it be vehicle maintenance, radio checks, cleaning equipment etc etc) and just have it that you expect them to continue to do that without any help or thanks and the one time they are away, working or unwell jump all over them for not doing it

Congrats Cam!!!!
I'll be able to pick your house now by the big fire truck parked in the frontyard
But gee Little John, I would have put you in the "young and enthusiastic" catagory. But is that just because I'm old and jaded myself?!

I would agree with you there, our unit has been responded to a siege situation as they were concerned that he was going to set fire to the house

I walk a fine line with taking pics at incidents and took a while to work out how to handle it. (I normally take sports pics etc for our local paper but do get called on to take extra pics when something is happening in our town and there is no one around to cover it) What I have done is spoken to my Captain and GO and explained to them that I will not turn up as the media unless I have been contacted by another reporter and that I will never use my knowledge from the pager or from handling an incident to take pics. I might take some pics with my own camera for own personal/brigade use but never for publication. There have been many a time that I could have taken pics from being at an incident (yes I have kicked myself because I haven't) but as I have not being contacted to do so I have restrained myself (as an adult I guess I have the ability to be able to control myself and act correctly - shock horror)
This has been working for me, but I guess it is working because I abide by my own rules that I have set for myself so as to not cause any problems. A lot of the time media will actually get pics from an incident from SAPOL or SAAS as far as I can tell as they have certainly not been pics that I took that appeared in publication and the only other people taking pics were from those organisations.

The latest in water saving measures Camo you are at the front of this technology. Run a hose from the leak straight into the tank on the truck and fill it up that way

What a way to start the day, Thanks Jaff, you have no idea of the images running around in my head now :-D
It was enough with the imagination working overtime about numbers website but to follow it up with half dressed firies running around in thongs (and no of course I was not imagining the feet variety)
Boy, this lack of sleep is really starting to effect my brain!
Oh, well at least you can say I'm easily ammused and I'm know grinning to start my day
