Incident Operations / Re: Wail sirens dogs starts dogs howling
« on: October 31, 2006, 01:00:37 PM »
The dogs are usually the first indicator that the fellas are out around here... they start howling just before I can hear the sirens, and funnily enough, I still hear the sirens quite a while before anyone else.

It's official... Squiddy is part dog.  :-o

Now hang on ses cars/units if doing a job for CFS are covered on the fireground if that is not the case then how come private farm units are covered when on the fire ground once they report to CFS command???

Because a lot of SES vehicles are now leased through StateFleet, and as such there is no fire insurance for them out on the fireground. Basically, it is a group of insurance pen pushers talking out their ringholes and making decisions about things they know absolutely nothing about. If SES personnell are injured during a tasking, even on the fireground, they are covered by WorkcoverSA, but it looks like they will have to catch a ride with the CFS or walk in, because from what I have heard from pretty high up is that SES vehicles are not to be used on the fireground.

SES can take food out to the CFS. SES can be used to evacuate people in the path of the fire. SES can help with communications and logistics.

Having said this, SES vehicles are NOT covered by insurance to be on the fireground.

Go team! Who forgot the fire insurance?!

Country Fire Service / Mobile phones and radios in trucks

Make the CFS supply you with a satellite phone. Tell them it is for OHS&W and they can't say no... because we all know how much the GRN loves smoke and heat.

We don't have mobile coverage.....so no point in having a mobile!!!    :-(

What ath is trying to say is why cant the CFS supply the salvos with some decent food so they can then supply it to us on the fireground.

Maybe the Salvos just have something against the CFS? The times they have catered for things for the SES when I have been "on duty" we have had everything from BBQ to fish and chips to custard and pudding.

There are a number of cfa/nswrfs/qldfs brigades that have their own catering appliances that are decked out with all the food that one would need at a large scale job.....

Yes, and SASES had the EMU... but it was evil.
So much work has to go into food hygiene these days... leave it all to the Salvos (because they do a really good job) and let us all get on with our jobs.

Country Fire Service / Re: Confidentiality

The new SES Induction & Basic Skills course has a large section on confidentiality. This is of the emergency incident, perople involved and all aspects of the service. It has been requested that all existing & new SES members complete the course in the next 12 months.

Yes, and for those of us who have done our basic, it is going to be several nights of complete boredom as everything is rehashed that we covered ages ago.

It is also written in the MOGI and SES Code of Conduct that all members will not breach confidentiality.

Amen to that.

Looks like some people obviously don't have kids. Basically, if the pager goes off, some parents may feel that they shouldn't bother the neighbours etc. But if the pager goes off again, then it certainly makes that decision to dump the kids off with the elderly neighbour a lot easier.

Since we don't get paid to sit around on our duffs waiting for calls, I don't think it is unreasonable to sometimes miss that first page through circumstance.

For example: anyone been caught on the bog when the pager goes off? What are you gonna do, shove some TP up ya crack and run for the door?

It is now being blamed on a "script error"

Funny that when criticism is levelled there is no "human error"... that's right... blame the tools, never the tools using them...

Wow, fantastic effort!
Have you got any more information about the competition and who else won?

Not as yet... I scored that tidbit from the Advertiser. It was a tiny article about 10 pages in. Obviously abusing emergency services is more important than praising them in the media  :|

Will update as soon as I have more details.

After heading off to the world RCR championships representing Australia, Laura SES took out first place in the rapid extrication section of the competition. Not too bad for the only volunteer crew in the competition...

Well done lads.

Mock bus explosion in city
TEGAN SLUGGETT, POLICE REPORTER
October 15, 2006 10:17am

EMERGENCY crews rushed to a simulated bus bombing on North Terrace this morning as part of a national security training exercise.

But the exercise raised questions about the response time of ambulance crews when it took 15 minutes for them to arrive at the scene of the mock explosion, while police and fire crews were on the scene within minutes.

Screams and moans came from "victims" of the bombing - police cadets dressed as injured or dead civilians - who were lying across the sidewalk and inside the bus, and fire crews were forced to drag them out of danger while waiting for ambulance crews to arrive.

Ambulance general manager for emergency and major events Lee Francis said he did not believe ambulance crews were slow to the scene.

"You have to look at what time the ambulance service was notified," he said.

"We will review the response time, but at the moment we are happy with it."

Looks like SAAS are copping a bit of flak from everyone at the moment...

1 person trapped and serious injuries in a end over end roll over and 17 minutes to be called.
Will call headquarters and find out who call came from and grievance forms will definatly be lodged for this one. :x

That is disgusting.

SA Firefighter General / Budget Systems
« on: October 14, 2006, 09:30:03 AM »
And you end up with your neighbouring service getting a full set of rescue gear, when you already have the gear...with no checks done in relation to whether or not the gear is required or not......

Grants are great, but really, shouldn't the CFS be better funded, so we don't need to go begging for things that we actually use - like vehicle fridges, TV / DVD players & stuff like that!!

Pip

Just wait until they introduce the new budget system like the did with the SES, then it will be back to the good old days of begging, stealing and borrowing everything you can because you are competing against every other regional brigade for new equipment etc. Ask anyone who is dealing with the new SES budget system just how wonderful it is...  :|

Even if everyone got back from KI in time, they would all be pretty stuffed, I'd say. Sure, it is disappointing, but it certainly isn't the end of the world. Besides, from the rumblings in the wind, there are a few lighter-happy buggers out there at the moment who would gladly take an opportunity to watch the trucks roll out of their area and then light up... it wouldn't matter if it was cadets or others, it is still a resource out of the area is it not?

The Humour Zone / The little red wagon firetruck
« on: October 07, 2006, 10:29:58 PM »
A fire fighter is working on the engine outside the station, when he notices a little boy next door in a little red wagon with little ladders hung off the side, and a garden hose tightly coiled in the middle. The boy is wearing a fire fighter's helmet and has the wagon tied to a dog and a cat.

The fire fighter walks over to take a closer look.

"That sure is a nice fire truck," the fire fighter says with admiration.

"Thanks mister," the boy says.

The fire fighter looks a little closer and notices the boy has tied the wagon to the dog's collar and to the cat's testicles.

"Little partner," the fire fighter says, "I don't want to tell you how to run your fire truck, but if you were to tie that rope around the cat's collar, I think you could go faster."

The little boy says, "You're probably right, mister, but then I wouldn't have a siren."

PRIORITY TWO = SES responding only, lights and sirens
Hold up there big fella... why the buggery is anyone going with lights and sirens to a P2? Maybe lights, but a 10m branch does not constitute alarming the public like that. Maybe if it were on a busload of girl guides, but certainly not if it is already on the fence and in the school grounds.

Hold on a minute - before we point too many fingers - there are a lot of fire service resources that will respond P1 to everything - including tree's down, minor flooding, spillages (non hazmat) even tractor boggings - each service has it's SOP's and from there down each station has an OIC who makes a determination when the call is received

Yeah... I know that. Its just a shame that a lot of those OICs are adrenaline junkies and like to use their lights and sirens when it isn't always necessary.
