Well i'm not sure a state wide fire ban will commence on the 15th Oct but the fire season is starting then.

Doesn't your brigade undertake any hazard reduction burns? It will make a difference in many areas, mine included, where we have been planning some burn offs. With the restrictions coming in early, it means more running around to get permits, plans etc.
In my area right now, the conditions are pretty right for burn offs - other than the wind which comes up at various times. An early season in my area will mean some people won't get their burns done (either ones done by CFS, or by the land holder)...and a bucket load more work for the Captain, in checking proposed burns, when people apply for a permit (assuming that permits will be issued!!) The other problem that may arise is that people try to get their burn offs done earlier, due to an early start to the season - and end up lighting up on a day which they perhaps shouldn't.....then we get the call.....
To put the season in a bit of a perspective, in my area in the last 3 weeks, we have had 35 mm of rain. While many areas of the state are in desperate need of rain (and very dry, and perhaps not safe for anyone to burn), a small area is not in the same boat so to speak.
Having said that, having a uniform fire season, will take the confusion out of fire restrictions for this year! :-)

Some areas are still green but for how long??? Nice to see that they will all come on at once and from what I hear CFA may also be doing the same. As pip said some places had 35mm of rain and others had less than 2mm in the past week or so.....

Damn we're struggling down here, but hey, what can we do about it.

The state may have its first fire ban in the lower south east on sunday will know more saturday......

on that note... as a R5 vollie what do you think about paging the whole region to say that there might be a ban sunday? personally i think its a bit odd, and confuses soem poor vollies....

Looks like that message was a "heads up " to the Group Office holders in each Group, not a general page to everyone in the Region...
Can't see anything wrong with giving people some warning......

there were a few lighning strike fires today. I was down at sellicks earlier today and there was a fair bit of lighning out over the water.

If lightning strikes hit the water does that mean all sea water becomes conductive of electricity?

I was watching the weather tonight on National Nine News and it looks like we might have a fire ban on Wednesday and Sunday due to the temps and strong northerlies :-o

Sure the fire season is starting early - but be honest - are you as a fire fighter more prepared during the fire season than other times, as people have indicated here that it's an impact on us ...... WTF?
As a firie, I'm prepared 24/7, 365 days. If I can attend I will, if I can't there is little I can do about it.
As a firie, I'm active in the community with prevention, including my own home.
As a firie, I encourage my neighbours, friends etc to be fire wise and prepared.
The fire season to me - warmer weather, still prepared, still active and still aware that the community is complacant, regardless wheteher it be due to fire season, driving accidents, structure fires etc.

The FDI peaked on Hindmarsh Island midday today at 121.
Fire we went to at Mt Compass today was spotting around 600m from the original fire luckily still reasonably green at Compass. Definatly not looking forward to the next few months. :-(

There was a picture of the fire which a some of the gambier group brigades responded to on the front page of today's Border Watch.... also it turns out that a deadly brown snake was found in the Lakes Village undercover carpark seeiking shelter from yesterday heat :-D

i can recall at least 3 in gambier group alone!

1 at mt benson
1 at tantanoola....
cant remember any others but to me that equals 7 and there maybe a few i missed!

Have been watching the grass in my area and over the past week have noticed a significant change in the colour. Give it another week of dry weather and i reckon it'll be about 70-80% cured.

We have a Fire season, and an MVA Season... haven't had problems with snakes :P

Sounds like a few grassis starting today even. Also noticed a few burnoffs being done by brigades.....down here in the mount it is quite blowie so hopefully no one decides to do the same here.

I had a email with photos of a grass fire in Victoria that needed 16 tankers to put out,mind you the grass and scrub was green but very dry under the treelines....

it was "anyone available for sight seeing to Ngarkat", should have been strike team. The Brigade thought i purposly put it like that - we all know what strike teams can be like.

The deployment continues....Can someone update me on the status of the KI fires.
Last I heard it was a slow moving burn in difficult to access (steep) terrain. No properties were threatened and containment lines had been formed.

I presume this is 12 from the region and not per group? Each group page i see says require 12 FF's to go to KI. That equates to alot

Make sure you bring the NO DOZ cause the crews coming back worked three days and only three hours sleep :evil:

I Heard They Were Being Sent Cause Of Lighting Strikes.

Our crews flew out this morning and are working on the Mt Taylor fire, mainly patrolling and mopping up.
They are using some of the Region One mainland trucks still on the island, we have been told they are due back in Adelaide Friday night.

KI,why is it that we still can not get it right when we send crews to the ISLAND?? I have spoken to a number of people who went over and they are not happy about how they where treated and the way in which they where informed of things and that what one person said say not true or that was never said....Now if you want people to go on this yearly trip then its about time that CFS got it right,from those in IMT to the person giving the briefing to food to shift times to go home let get it right...this comes up each year and it would be nice if we could get it all right once and for all......
I would hope that when groups have a debrief about the KI tour that members will speak up and that this time something is done..No I did not go but if I was home and they page went out I would have put my hand up as its been a while since I was over there.....

Blinky - KI is like Ngarkat - burns every year, we have debriefs every year and each year we get some things improved - slow wheel to improvement.
Interesting though - we go to NSW and Vic and seam to get most of it right, but can't in our own back yard - go figure???

I reckon it can be easily explained why it all seems to work well when we go interstate, but doesn't seem to go as well in our own back yard......
When we go interstate, we tend to get the best of the IMT people, and the best of the crews, because we have the time to organise things, employers are perhaps more willing to let their staff go because the perception is that things are much more serious if we send people interstate, than locally (even though it is probably the other way round!) whereas for a local thing we get whoever can turn up ASAP - who may not be the best person for the job, but at least it's a person to help......

Its my favourite paper to read 4 days a week Camo :-D but still doesnt the soil drying out twice as fast now as it did 24 1/2-25 years ago concern you one bit :-(

The grass around Kalangadoo is starting to dry out as well ath even though its still green the colour is off greenish/yellow colour so a few more warm days like you said will dry it out
According to the Weather Bureau website temperature outlook were gonna have a really warm/hot November which in a way does work to my advantage as i am re-entering my float from last year into this years Mount Gambier Christmas Parade and a warm/sunny would be a blessing :-D

Prediction from our Group meeting the other night was 100% curing in two weeks time.
Quite achievable if we get some sunny days with some wind.
Which float is your rob? need to know which one i need to throw the water balloons at! :lol:

My float is the Little Red Toy & Pokemon Christmas Car and no you cant throw water bombs at it Camo cause my support crew will be working really hard on parade morning to get it set up just right before the parade just like they did last year :wink:
100 % curing :-o thats unusual for this time of year but then again its an ominous sign of whats to come in the next few months :cry: :|
If you want a picture of the float Camo for the Gambier Group base or your brigade station wall dont forget the Digital Camera cause my float was quite popular last year :-D

In regards to IMT teams.....weekend course being run this weekend at Brukunga for senior AIIMS team members. So in theory better trained people will help the process and limit the issues in the future....or am I just in happy, happy land :mrgreen:

Hopefully with the increased training courses, and also courses that raise a better understanding inf the process, at least everyone will be on the same page, so to speak!!!
If you do nothing, then nothing will come of it!! :-)
