SAAS / Re: Why is Australia so against the use of tourniquets?
« on: May 16, 2014, 11:36:55 AM »
I recently did the care flight trauma course, Talking to the instructors ASNSW has recently started suppling them to crews again, One comment that was made was they have become more popular since the Afghanistan campaign and also a new surge of research in to the effect on them has shown them to be a valuable tool in trained hands.

I recently used an improvised one at a competition, when the judge questioned my use of it I pointed out that as long as I could tell exactly when I had applied it and why there should be no problems, And as an aside we never got penalised for using it

SA Firefighter General / Damage to appliances on deployment
« on: December 03, 2012, 06:08:20 PM »
Whilst it is a CFS appliance Flametrees a lot of volunteer brigades take a lot of pride in the condition of the trucks assigned to them, hence they feel a fairly large amount of ownership of each of the appliances that are assigned, unfortunately you also get some who do not have as much pride/ownership,

Raven is a good example even though it was not his brigads truck the crew had the pride and professionalism to do what they could to return the appliance to the condition it should have been left in give or take a few layers of dust and soot.

SAAS / Re: ECP Model to be rolled out on Limestone Coast

Are district nurses available 24/7 like paramedics ?, we all have frequent flyer's who could easily be dealt with at 2 in the morning by an ECP saving both an emergency crew on the initial call for higher priority calls, And a PTS crew to take them back,

Whilst i will take the overtime for a PTS job at stupid o'clock, I would much prefer the cost saving of not having to go in the first pace, and for the record I work PTS for my State Govt agency,

SAAS / Re: More on Private Providers
« on: April 05, 2012, 10:16:56 PM »
at one stage in tassie the privateers had oranges, but i understand that a decision was made to allow red n blues under disaster legislation which would allow them to assist in MCI,  the private guys are not allowed to transport emergency cases (as a rule), they have to call AT comms and get a ambulance, we also have two major PTS services ( ambulance tas PTS and Ambulance Private) and a couple of smaller ones ( St Johns and a new mob i cannot remember there name, Ambulance Tas also have a number of First reponder groups as well

If anyone from Birdwood is following this thread, I would lke to know what you think of the 14 once you have a bit of time with it under your belt, seems to have bounced around a little, just looking for some opinions on it

I heard there was issues with the suspension upgrade that was used, apparently it was not ADR compliant and nissan will not touch the modified vehicles when it involves warrenty work

should be easy enough if you use hermaphrodite couplings ( storz, wajax, forestry etc) the plumbing runs to a coupling in the hose reel then brigades can fit what ever they like on the reel.

I would think it is to assist with getting the patient out of the on to the stretcher, out of the house and in to the truck, with a 2 person crew it is not easy to move a patient especially with a bung hip, I know at work we regularly use firies to provide a lift of a patient

All Equipment discussion / Re: New CFS Village Pumper
« on: November 06, 2010, 08:43:28 PM »

The "pumper" tag is irrevelant here, it will be designated a 14. Pumper comes from the tasfire designation, where any truck carrying BA is a pumper. Yes, it has stowage for BA.

If they kept the TFS tank size (which i am sure thet did it is 1600l)

Also I have never heard them refered to as a pumper, What TFS do differentiate though are the type of stowage on the appliance its either Urban or Rural,

With refilling the tank, is there a recirculation pipe back in to the top of the tank?, on the TFS version we fill through the suction inlet with a length of 64mm duraline, we open the Tank to pump valve and also the Recirc valve with is a two way valve that also feeds the 38mm and 25mm outlet, then turn the standpipe on takes about 5 minutes to fill ( might need a photo to make this clear Let me Know)

TasSES are going to the transits in a big way, Both as a Storm Response/General rescue vehicle and as a RAR response vehicle, no big issues I have heard of, belts for 7 but i would say 5 or 6 realistically

CFS Cadet Corner / Re: Cadet training with firefighters
« on: September 17, 2009, 11:10:08 AM »
TFS runs there cadets slightly different, 12-16 they are considerd junior members, they train at a seperate time for about an hour on the regular brigade training night ( at least thats my brigade), they get do everything bar BA, driving (obviously) and a couple of other specialist skills, after they turn 16 they become cadets and are allowed to attend regular brigade training and participate in drills and other training apart from BA and driving,

This seems to work well as they get two years of training in with the operational memebers and by the time they are 18 everyone has a good handle on them and there abilitys, also they can earn there ticket to ride so to speak and can then go to calls once they turn 18 and get a pager, not 100% sure ages mentioned are right but pretty close

Incidents / Re: Myer Fire
« on: September 14, 2009, 11:10:27 AM »
Most calls in Hobart only get 1 pump, nursing homes/hospitals etc get 2, pretty much everything else is special call, also remember that in hobart the career guys have 5 heavy pumpers, 2 in station 1 , 1 at station 2 and 1 at station 3, the 2 composite stations run a Urban Heavy Tanker 3.1P and they have 1 Heavy pumper in ready to go reserve at Station 1, after that the three nearest urban pumpers are all medium pumpers 1 at Fern Tree, 1 at Kingston and the other I think is Lauderdale, Hbt staion also runs the HP for southern tas, and the Special equipment/Rescue Vehicle for Hobart,

Crew for either the HP or special equipment is pulled from 1 of the 2 hobart heavy pumpers, in the case of a RAR call in hobart they send 1 heavy pumper and the rescue, then bring one of the other station in for coverage.
