SA Firefighter General / Re: Bomber response
« on: November 16, 2009, 11:49:35 AM »
Think about the political issues aswell. How quick would the media jump if they found out a bomber wasn't responded when it should have been.  Lets keep the PRZ's for bombers and auto dispatch them.

Chainsaws are "approved" stowage, not "standard" sotwage.  There is a difference, and alot of paperwork ie hazard assessments, modifications to lockers etc.

Jet A-1, and there probably a store of it somewhere in the town.  As for how they get it there's probably a procedure setup so they can access it whenever.

There are several Brigades around that provide a 'fuel dump' for the helicopters.  Mostly Brigades who are on the fringe of where the choppers' fuel capacitiy limits.  My Brigade used to have a dump.

Where did you hear this??

As a CABA instructor I am not aware of this.  I was instructing a course just last weekend and did not hear anything like this.

I'm also a Trainer/Assessor and haven't heard anything of the sort.  If this was true i am sure it would have been brought up a the BA Trainer/Assessor's seminar not all that long ago......and it wasn't.

its a feature of this appliance build that when the engine revs die and the driver just catches it before it stalls, then there can be a compression backload and the engine can fire in revers - so exhaust coming out the air filter,, 6 reverse 1 forwards gears...lol, the CFA mechanic was trying not to laugh when he told us. To fix just switch it of, and start it again.

Our Hino has done it a couple of times.....just need to make drivers aware
Some of the guys at the briefing in Vic thought the Task Force Commanders were having a joke to start with till i told them our story.

Saw the Sale tanker while i was there.  We also had Stratford tanker in our strike team.  Nice truck with the "Halo" crew protection all round including wheel arches, not just on the cab.  Had a access door at the rear of the cab for crew to access crew deck from cabin....no need to even get off the truck.

Country Fire Service / Re: Vic deployment Q&A
« on: February 16, 2009, 12:40:11 PM »
Our tanker had 25mm layflat which made life very easy for us in the area we were working in. The portable pump (not floating) on one tanker in the strike team was a God send as there were not many, if any, hydrants but loads of dams.  The tanker i was on was an older Hino from a rural Brigade.  It was more than acceptable for their area and the work we were doing. The slight hiccups were easily rectified with the mobile CFA workshop crews back at the staging area. Meals were awesome at the Uni cafe with a chef onsite. It was definitely an easier operation as there was no night crew, so there wasn't much, if any, hurry up and wait.

All Equipment discussion / Re: stowage of road cones on rural 24
« on: February 16, 2009, 12:23:17 PM »
There should be a plastic covered cable bolted to the base of the cone holder with a loop on the other end that goes over the top cone.  Does your appliance have that?

Well done to all the people on my recent deployment to Vic. I had a great time working with some very professional firefighters from CFS and MFS.  The job got done regardless of uniform uniformity!

SA Firefighter General / Acknowledging WFAM responses
« on: December 08, 2008, 10:27:43 AM »
We have two premises on WFAM and one direct to station.  Our Brigade has never been advised on what to do on turn out of a WFAM in regards to communications. Albeit common sense prevails and we contact AF to book mobile regardless. Thanks for clearing it up Alex. Nice to know we are doing the right thing even if it's not on a 'formal' piece of paper.

Hi all. Just some general discussion on what Brigades have done in the past to commission thier new appliances and how many Brigades actually do this. We are commissioning our 34P on Australia Day.
