We often have BBQ's after training or just have a BBQ on a training night with no training. We also organise a volunteer fun day where this year all local emergency agencies went ten pin bowling. Doesn't hurt to get some multi agency comradere happening too.

OK some questions  :?

Does this happen often in a country brigade ??
What did they use to get the bird out of the shed ??

Last time I tried to get a bird out it involved a few people walking with a large tarp to reduce the area that the bird could fly in until it realised that the shed door was open.

After the alarm went off, I attended the station and opened up the three automatic roller doors and the bird just flew out of our not so country station. He must have been hiding while we closed the station after our last job.

Yep understand the need to build up air (3 minutes tops) - don't know about you but our doors are open when thats happening & as soon as it can moved it's driven outside. Not sure of your response requirements but our target is 6 minutes from when the pager drops. So they don't sit in the shed long.
What I mean't was just starting them up to test everything - same deal they are moved out side once the brakes release.
I know of some brigades & units that have an air line connected, just like the battery backup so the system is fully charged all of the time, it's something the new management team are looking into this financial year.
cheers

My previous post was intended to be sarcastic chook
Yeah our doors go up when the first person enters their code to the station so no real dramas with toxin build up, however an extraction system would be nice hey.

The trucks shouldn't be left idling in the shed anyway
Not sure how we are supposed to  build up air pressure for brakes then, oh, rev the crap out of them - they won't be idling then  :-P

A course I did about 2 weeks ago, an email I was shown from the regional training person said only one travel claim per 4 people (presumably from the one brigade) would be accepted.

I find that a little hard to believe. It may be circumstantial that even if members of the same Brigade are attending the same course they may be travelling to the course from different locations where it is not possible to car pool. Every confirmation letter of a course states "wherever possible a command vehicle must be used in accordance with COSO yada yada yada". However, common sense should prevail if multiple members from the same Brigade are attending the same course and travel in the same car.

We used to train on Thursday nights. We have alot of people who play footy and netball and their trainings are on that night also, so we changed to Mondays. It wasn't to p1ss Adelaide Fire off and have every Brigade in the state do a pager test at same time on the same night :-P

This is easy and effective. Used this method several times.

As Pip mentioned, the FSI should have been programmed to alert (whatever pagers you want)in the event of a power failure. This is also connected to SMS a mobile phone in the event the paging system is down (again, whatever phone your Brigade chooses). Our Brigade has experienced several power outages and this has worked fine for us. Obviously AEC techs connected the system correctly. As for the siren thing with the power failure obviously a different problem. In the short,  AEC should have programmed the FSI to alert of power failures via pager(s), as per their contract.

I find this works well with this sort of stuff.

Your Captain or Admin officer should have a form for you to fill out and fax to the PR dept to add you to the list. If you have trouble getting one PM and i will fax one to you.

SASES / Fundraising
« on: April 17, 2008, 12:13:22 PM »
Hi all,
Just had a phone call from the SES (i know it is just a call centre) asking for donations. Are the SES conducting fundraising activities via the phone at the moment or could this be a scam?
Cheers.

Well done Raggy.
He thrives on this stuff. Will be good for people who have listened to him behind the mic for years to actually see his face on the TV.

(insert voice over voice) Well done and keep up the good work mate!

SA Fire Fighter Events / Re: ANGASTON GROUP FUNDRAISER
« on: April 09, 2008, 10:29:27 AM »
Our brigade has done a fair amount of self funded training, often to get around SFEC issues. As far as non standard stowage issues, I was under the impression that as long as a risk assessment has been done and relevant training undertaken, there is little issue with with the equipment being used.

It would be nice to know a little bit more about what the concert is raising money for, rather than just "Angaston CFS Group"

There is a difference between standard stowage, non standard stowage and approved stowage

I would assume a vehicle fire (wearing BA of course) would constitute the wearing of PBI gold. It seems, as was the case when we were first issued the gear, that Groups and Regions still have their own rules/recommendations for the use of it.

SA Firefighter General / Re: Voice Recorders
« on: April 02, 2008, 01:03:06 PM »
This should be a little bit interesting. I'm sure that members of the group would like to know that they are being recorded.

I assume that much like it used to be 111 and 124 being recorded by the CFS(There are no doubt others, but these were the only ones relevant to Lofty Group) now it would be 150 and the other non simplex SAMFS talkgroups?

In our instance, the purchase of the scanner was passed at Group, so Captains should have advised all members what the circumstance was and that they would be recorded. All Regional talkgroups are recorderd. I bet half of the CFS population do not know that. If there was an obligation for CFS to advise all members i am sure they would have by now

What program??

Scanner recorder (scanrec). It's free and easy to use. Works for us anyway.

We successfully use a scanner with a recording program on the computer. Records both sides of a conversation, GRN, UHF or VHF. This is intended for radio traffic only tho. Has a date and time stamp as well.
