SA Firefighter General / Re: Quality of food
« on: January 30, 2006, 01:00:40 PM »
I like the idea of Subway...as for the guns..we have enough danger in what we do without some cowboy gunning down lunch...can you imagine Judy Arthur getting hold of that one...

We are often given hot chicken packs with chips - don't get me wrong..like to eat them BUT not always easy eating..gravy everywhere and then there is the rubbish to dispose of...FANTASTIC at the end of your shift or when you've been out for hours but personnally, a couple of sandwiches still win out for me..

I remember when we were lucky to be fed at all BUT that's not to say that any part of that was ideal...

It's not easy catering for everyone's dietary needs either...and to sustain a crew from your snack pack doesn't always work..especially if you've had a busy time and not been able to restock...

They also have to consider food hygiene and how to keep food from going off and giving all the crews food poisoning...at least I haven't heard that happening...surprising sometimes..I know how grateful I was on Black Tuesday to find a ham & cheese sandwich (at 15.30) as I hadn't eaten since 4am...

Catering will always have it's issues..and if we don't speak up about the standards..they can fall away pretty quickly..

Once again we see how CFS is stuck between a rock and hard place...there was MUCH criticism over not enough warning being given to residents on Lower EP during Black Tuesday and now they are being slammed for too much...

Perhaps those residents haven't caught up with the slogan of GOING EARLY and not leaving at the last minute to get caught in their cars...

The most important factor that stands out after Black Tuesday is the LACK of preparedness by people in the community...

It can be very difficult to judge the speed of fires sometimes and that can change very quickly...maybe they should be thankful that they now understand the warnings...

On another note about the Eyre Pen. fires if you think what the CFS did the night before when they were trying to contain those fires. I forget exeactly CFS rules but i think it is something like 5 hours that you are allowed to be on the fireground for at a time. How close is the next briagade over there, it is almost the same time for us to get 4 full group strike teams here as it takes to get one striketeam here. With such a vast area with little resources it just doesnt work.

Sam,

Our group has 16 brigades..within 1.5hrs of the fire starting, all appliances in our group were committed and we had a strike team from the adjoining group helping...you are right...any strike team further than that is at least 1.5hrs away...as for shift length...they shouldn't be longer than 12hrs..

I agree totally...the one thing that everyone could take from the whole experience is to look at their own properties and preparedness..the expectation that we will and can be everywhere is unrealistic.

It's too easy to leave it to CFS and then blame us if we don't deliver (which is RARE!)

Del,

The CFS Home page does have some updates but unfortunately, they have to be super careful with what goes on there...they can't be seen to be giving any opinion or slant on the proceedings..otherwise they can be charged...

A strong tip, don't bother relying on the media for any accuracy...their stories tend to have about 1% fact and the rest a fairytale..

I am currently involved with the Coronial Inquest into Black Tuesday. After listening to one of the Crown solicitors, I would advise any volunteer who likes to work outside of the SOP's that you would consider never doing it again unless you wish to finance your own legal representation in such a process.

The SOP's are there for your own protection..

...... it doesn't matter if your in a group who thinks they can write their own SOP's and abide by their own laws or create their own appliances or additional levels of equipment or if your a member of an ema brigade who uses K codes - your all outside of the SOP's, no matter if it's a little bit or a large bit!

It is true, Brenton has resigned, I've heard he is going to work for SAFECOM part time, not sure what doing...Andrew Lawson seems to be doing a good job Acting..maybe he'll have a pitch at it.. :-)

You will also find that there has been a large bucket of funding come through for this particular subject.

They can contact the RO and ask for the Community Blitz crew to come to their area and arrange for neighbours to join in..

If only we can get more people to be prepared, it will make our jobs much easier..and their properties safer!

It is unbelievable how many are already not prepared for the season..and this is many that experienced Black Tuesday..maybe they think that it won't happen to them 2 years in a row.. :?

I agree about the Chief Officer not being paid enough..he certainly earns his money and I'm sure that there is plenty of times when he can't say what he really wants to but has to pass on the minister's message. :-)

As for SAFF being in charge of SHQ..no thanks..I think that they do a great job considering how many other organisations and people are trying to put their two cents worth into every decision. It can't be easy to make decisions that make 16,000 people happy and keep them safe...

I agree with us all looking the same and also the effect on having a sea of yellow getting off the plane but imagine how good we would look if we were all dressed the same...or even the same colour..

Pity we are driven by accommodating the media vs comfort for travelling...

As for dress uniforms..I resisted getting one after becoming Capt for some time but now that I have one..I agree with Kat, it's great to have something to wear to official functions when we are representing CFS..

Yes, wearing them on the plane is stupid but you would have been shocked at how many did ..and like I said..wore them home again..NICE after 6 days of firefighting..NOT>...I suppose some people don't get out much..LOL

Ask yourself why these vollys are wanting to sue the CFS. What went so terribly wrong that makes them want to do this. I think there is more to this than us outsiders see.

David,

We ask ourselves often why they are seeking compensation..I believe as I have said previously, it is linked to their own guilt about what they did or DIDN'T do themselves on the day...I don't believe that they have been really informed of what could happen..I know that the insurance companies will be asking for their money back IF they ever won it...you may also find that some of them aren't insured and are using it as an avenue to generate money...

the bloke leading the group wasn't even here on the day..he was holidaying in QLD..so how is he in a position to comment??

Ever since I went to Sydney in 2001, they have been trying to determine and issue a uniform for vollies to wear whilst travelling for deployments.

I remember thinking how inappropriate it was that some were wearing their yellows on the plane..over and what's worse BACK after a week of firefighting.

They can't seem to get past the colour issue...green, blue, taupe...I suppose it will take another deployment before they really do something...or arrange another committee to procrastinate about it.

« on: October 12, 2005, 01:51:26 PM »
we are looking to provide all new recruits (especially) and other group members with a kit bag...it's all part of keeping PPC in the right place etc.

I have a bag (lovingly known as my "body bag") which lives behind the seat in my ute...I am most often called away during the day and from work...wouldn't be without it..has my complete PPC plus under clothes, spare gloves etc (for those crew who can't find theirs)

You can factor it into your group budgets and purchases of PPC.. :-)

Kat, through all of the hard times, one thing that has remained constant is the support from CFS and VFBA from the top down.

I have personally had many calls and visits from Euan and Wendy, as well as the Regional staff being available at all times...and then there is the incredible SPAM team..without all this support..I think many vollies would have resigned...there is tougher times to come though but all have re-inforced their commitment to get everyone through.

There are 52 names on the witness list...most would be vollies..unfortunately, mine is one of them...you can all hope that you never have to have the experience.

You have it completely Robert34..it was a filthy day..and any fire of any size burning on that day..probably would have resulted in the same outcome..

Unfortunately, you are also right about Bushfire Prevention Plans...8 of those tragically taken were in vehicles..many more were miraculously spared as they fled...instead of staying in their homes..we need more effective education.

It is also difficult to understand the hypocrisy associated with current volunteers looking to sue the organisation that they belong to ..and some claim to love being a part of..that sticks in my throat!

I was involved on Black Tuesday.

I respect that people have the right to spend their money on expensive lawyers for potentially no result..and run the risk of being counter sued by the govt for expenses but perhaps they should spend the time looking at why they want to lay blame..

Maybe it's because they can't resolve their own guilt of what they did or didn't do over the 2 days??

There is more misinformation than fact being presented in the media and most that are speaking out are talking fiction...

Hi There,

I was involved with Black Tuesday..and Dr Bob Smith's report..trust me..his report is not completely accurate.

Unfortunately, it has created some issues with volunteers going to the media and having their public say...

I hope that nobody has to have the same experience that we have had or are having!
