SA Firefighter General / Re: Lessons learnt while filming bushfires
« on: September 13, 2006, 08:55:06 AM »
I don't have a problem with the media being there ...as long as they don't get in the way...the only thing I wish they DIDN'T do is be put into yellows...you can too easily take them for firies...and expect them to know what to do...why can't they be in a different coloured PPC...green or something??

I had to tell a very unscrupulous journo to get off someone's property during Black Tuesday...I threatened to call the cops if I saw him doing it again...he's renowned for not being ethical...

I've seen plenty of twitchy ones...love to be responded...

I agree that the public are part of the problem out of season...but they are only trying to help...  :-)

Nothing like twitchy firies...waiting to respond...I would be disappointed if those responses were to controlled burns...people do need to remember that landowners aren't required to notify anyone outside of permit/fire danger season... :-o

I haven't heard anything further on the update...I would expect that it will depend on the weather in the next few weeks...if the weather continues to be hot and windy...it may be start of Oct...would also depend on curing rates...it should go to the Groups for consultation too...maybe.. :?

You will find that the response plans will be ramped up to allow for the lack of soil moisture and the potential for another AW or BT is quite high..2 years since the last is probably not long enough to forget!!

We didnt' have enough resources then..and we never will when mother nature decides to play nasty...

Holy cow  :-o you kidding me all mighty DGO CaptCom

all true Robert34...and I've seen what extreme weather can do with a going fire... = Black Tuesday...

Pip is right...soil dryness and then quicker curing rate = early fire danger... = shite against fan..

Back to the topic...I was listening to the ABC yesterday and they were saying that the chance of us having an El Nino event prior to xmas was really high and that the increase chance of a significant fire was 20%...and Andy Lawson was saying this morning that the fire danger season may be brought forward to Oct due to the lack of rain...could be a LONG season... :x

The thing is, if they were truely serious about recognising the volunteers then this would happen automatically.... not by request.

If I have to ask for something to honour members service, then i dont think they are truely honouring it are they! The thought probably hadent even crossed their minds!

couldnt have put it better myself!

I agree with corecutters...without knowing your phyical dimensions fire_freak...unless you are grossly unfit or a stick person...you should be able to complete the physical tests..

and I agree with the life enjoyment...join CFS..get some experience without the pressure of being paid...we also experience very different incidents...MFS don't usually do wildfires...(they do help but it's not their specialty)

You also need to be prepared to face some really ugly situations and sights..not something to rush into at a young age...

I wouldn't have thought that there would be much of Ngarkat that hasn't been burnt from last year!  :-D

from my experience firetruck..that's exactly the occasion to wear the uniform...and I agree with the bigger, professional environment...it also carries the recognition from external parties...I was lucky enough to be chosen to go back to Sydney for the parade after the fires...they all knew where we were from.

they are obviously a bit like our Corporate logo...and on the way out...the organisation is possibly not dedicating enough energy into acknowledgement of the efforts of their vollies...I've been a vollie for 19yrs and only have a 15yr service certificate...not that I really care but we shouldn't have to jump up and down and wave our arms for acknowledgement of our time dedicated

I agree with mengcfs...I resisted getting a dress uniform when I became Capt but have since found it very handy to wear to formal occasions eg meeting with pollies etc..it's a hard one though...personally, I think that officers should have them for a start...if other vollies want them..all good..you never know when they might be an officer or representing CFS...pity they couldn't make them UNIFORM...the shirts are ok but the pants all vary in colours of khaki!

and to think that SAFECOM was created to bring 3 of the services a bit closer together...wonder how we can get SAPOL and SAAS to play with us properly too..you have highlighted what we deal with all the time over here on EP meng...one day, it will cost someone...hope we aren't involved..  :x

Maybe these so called leaders need to be reminded of those 6% that are male...more of them and more problems usually than with the females who are there to do the job and not worry about stroking their egos..  :|

96
I don't have any issues with snatch straps...but I do with towing chains..(which there are some secretly stowed on appliances)...finding a tractor to tow is probably a better option all round...if possible!

Country Fire Service / Re: GRN paging outages
« on: August 21, 2006, 09:13:00 AM »
I expect that there may even be times that we have an outage and are not even aware of it...ie it goes down for a short time and we are notified but don't notice that it was...

more important that it's working properly during the fire season!

98
It's a big worry that it would burn so well when everything is green and obviously WET ...not sure if I would advertise how the appliance was retrieved...there are issues with towing..we've discussed this on another thread.. :|

Sometimes you have to wonder why people join the service...and need reminding that what we do, saves lives and property...yes, the politics and red tape can be an issue (and I know that after my coronial experience) but only if you let it be a distraction and drop the ball..

For me it's more about contributing to my community...whilst working within the safe boundaries of SOP's...if anyone had come to court and seen how the lawyers bashed you over the head with documents that we use eg Response Plans...you would think twice about working outside of them..

I agree with the name under the logo NOT being a good idea...different to have her actual name but it doesn't project a good image...and we do try to look professional..
