Country Fire Service / Life Expectancy of New Trucks
« on: May 23, 2007, 10:16:20 PM »
Gday,

Are the trucks that have been built in the last few years going to last to 20 years?

Naracoorte Pumper - 9 Years old & full of rust

Stirling Pumper - 4? Years old & continual problems.

Seaford Pumper - 14? Years old Continual Problems (seems to be going well at the moment)

McClaren Flat 34 - 2 or 3 years old and has problems staying on all 4 wheels.

Was speaking to a GO down my way a few weeks back and he said the workman ship on the newer trucks is shocking.  The electrical system in the truck is useless - The water level indicator has 10 wires in the same tube all black! no colour coding.

And then you look at the appliances built 20 years ago like Burnside Pumper & Eden Hills Pumper.  Still going strong at 25 & 20 respectively.  Why is this?  New parts not as good?  Competition is greater therefore cheaper prices therefore lesser quality?

What are peoples thoughts?

Hypotheticals / House Fire Persons Trapped
« on: May 07, 2007, 01:44:15 PM »
Gday,

You have arrived at a house fire (Brick 3 Bedroom Home).  There is a report of 1 or 2 people trapped inside.  You only have 2 Sets or you have 4 Sets & only 2 operators, either way it doesnt matter.

The fire seems to be contained to the front lounge room (going pretty well), may have spread to the roof but you cant confirm or deny.

Do you send a team of BA operators in with out backup or do you wait for another BA appliance to arrive?

Explain your actions whether they be yes or no.

Country Fire Service / New Members & Training
« on: April 07, 2007, 01:44:55 PM »
Unsure of the SOP here but i was informed the other day that new members arent to be issued with PPE until their BFF1 course and are not allowed to take part in training until the BFF1 course as well.

Is this an actual SOP or just a stupid rule within our group?

One reason given was they arent covered by insurance until they complete their BFF1 but i would of thought they would be as soon as they sign the membership book.

Gday,

Seems to be a decent fire going just south of Bridgewater.  Not familiar with the area but according to the map it looks like impacting on the south side of bridgewater.

Lofty, Heysen, Onkaparinga, Sturt groups committed.

Country Fire Service / GO's & DGO's attending incidents
« on: March 02, 2007, 05:02:04 PM »
Gday,

At what stage do you think a GO or DGO should attend an incident?

Every call? Any multiple brigade response? 2nd Alarm +?

There is a certain group (and probaly not the only one) where it seems a GO OR DGO attends every single incident from a fixed alarm to a minor grass fire or minor vehicle accident.

Personally i believe they arent needed until the incident is at a stage where a single captain can no longer manage e.g. mulitple brigades at more then just a small grass fire.  If a GO OR DGO attends every incident then the Brigade officers become no more then a babysitter.

What are peoples thoughts?

OFF Topic / Fire Books/Novels
« on: January 23, 2007, 04:26:50 PM »
Gday,

What books do people have that are fire related?  Non Fiction or Fiction

All i got is "tried by fire" - History of the CFS.

Just purchased a book called "3000 degrees" from the states.  About a fire company (think FDNY) who battled a warehouse fire.

« on: December 31, 2006, 02:16:59 PM »

Those with rural appliances have you ever used the 25mm sidelines as an attack line inside a structure?

If so how did you go with it?

OFF Topic / Photo Comp
« on: December 11, 2006, 05:22:51 PM »
Gday,

I have a 2 pronged idea.  And yes for a matter of fact it hurt alot!

Im conducting a photo comp.  First prize gets there photo printed onto my clock which i get too keep  :-D

But if someone wants to put up a prize well then that will be great.

Photos will need to be available in a high resolution at least 800 x 600.  but to display on here they will need to be a lot smaller.

Good luck  :-)

Incident Operations / High Fire Danger 9/12/06
« on: December 09, 2006, 03:13:06 PM »
Gday,

Well i dont know about up in the hills but down here in the South East it was a shocker.  Pretty much incident free though.

Only had 1 minor grass fire extinguished very quickly and the contiuation of the Bog Lane Fire, which at one point was posing some threat to a shack.

But luckily very little activity across the state which is good!

Just received the weather page for sunday and it will be alot cooler but high levels of lightning.

Country Fire Service / Mopping Up
« on: December 07, 2006, 04:16:08 PM »
Gday,

The dirty task that is mopping up....everyone hates it but without it you might as well have not even bothered to respond in the first place! Agree?

How does everyone conduct there mop up?  grassland and scrub/forest.

Grass - our brigade runs one or both sidelines down the side of the truck tied off to the bull bar and then 10-15m of hose from there.  This allows the driver to see where his crew is and be able to spot out hot spots the crew may have missed with the PA.

Scrub/Forest - Our brigade uses a homemade foam branch that produces great foam coverage (for both grass and scrub)& a rakehoe. 20-30m into the scrub unless otherwised specified.  Leaving no log unturned and no stump hole left uninspected.

Now my pet hate - People mopping up from the workdeck of the appliance!  Anyone on here that is dumb enough to admit it - all i can say you lazy person!  A great way to waste your time, water & effort.

All Equipment discussion / Bulk Water Carriers (Tankers)
« on: December 06, 2006, 07:50:35 PM »
Gday,

Just wondering to those who have tankers do you ever use them just as a fire fighting appliance or just a tanker?  Noticed that some have a few fire fighting capabilities.  Are these just for self defence purposes or for fire fighting in general?

All Equipment discussion / QAV's
« on: November 28, 2006, 02:24:11 PM »
Gday,

What is peoples experiance with these?  What did you think of them?

Had some experiance with a Slip On the other day and was quite impressed with there capabilities.  Is the CFS going to make any more of these?  I think Monash and someone else got one last year, any idea what they are like?

Do you think there should be a lot more of these around the state? (where suitable)

And if so what sort of setup?

All Equipment discussion / LED Torches
« on: November 28, 2006, 02:17:36 PM »
Gday,

What LED torches are people using?

I did have one (its now somewhere in the Dergholm Forest) that was a small clip on plastic thing from fire & rescue - seemed pretty good.  Thought i would ask the question before rushing out and buying another one.

Just wondering what experiance people have had with certain models.
