SA Firefighter General / Siren Types And Use
« on: October 17, 2006, 06:23:13 PM »
Gday,

Just a question

What siren (wail, yelp or mix) do people use and where.

We use mix except when coming up to a busy intersection where we switch to yelp.

What are the thoughts of others?

Hypotheticals / Grass fire
« on: October 17, 2006, 05:32:56 PM »
Gday,

This is not so much a hypothetical as it was real.

A few year back their was a grass fire on the outskirts of Mt Gambier.

I can remember the details exactly but i believe the wind was from the south and it burnt 50Ha or something.

Here is some details.

Fire started on side of road burning in a northerly direction.  1 House on the Western side of the fire approx. 100m from the fire line and the small Compton community approx. 1km to the east and then the City of Mt Gambier approx. 2.5km to the east.

Now....Wind changes around Mt Gambier usually come from the west.

So with this info would you attack the western fireline or the eastern fireline as the fire arriving appliance?

Country Fire Service / CFS Calander
« on: August 13, 2006, 02:07:17 PM »
Gday,

Wouldnt it be great to have a 12 month calander with a different cfs picture on each month?

Maybe it could be run by the media department and thru the volunteer mag.

People submit there photos and then 12 are selected and printed.  Could be preordered so no wastage would occur.

what do people think?

Also what ever happened to those big wall calanders the CFS used to produce?

OFF Topic / Continuing Story
« on: August 02, 2006, 05:52:59 PM »
Hey There,

This is a continuing story where a person adds a few sentences(Not a page!) to the story and the next person continues on.  Being this is a fire fighter website i would presume it would go down that track but up to you.  Try not to end the story, that just ruins the fun!  :-D

Ill Start

<<<<<
It was a cold wet windy night in the town of Friars.  Fred and Wilma were both asleep in bed unaware of the happenings at the local store. >>>>>>

Country Fire Service / Appliance Response Protocols
« on: July 28, 2006, 07:53:16 PM »
Gday,

Have been told of a situation in another brigade where there is a 1st left tenent that lives approx. 9mins away.  He instructs the appliance not to leave the station till he get there delaying the appliance by anywhere between 1-3 mins.
What is everyones opinion on this?

If the truck is full crewed with an officer (lower ranked then this officer) should it wait and kick a lowie fire fighter off the truck or should it roll?

What if the truck only has a minimum crew of 4 should it roll still or wait?

Hypotheticals / Hyperthetical (spelling?) Incidents
« on: July 26, 2006, 06:18:54 PM »
Gday Folks,

Bit bored so i thought i would make up a hyperthetical incident and get everyone to give their thoughts on how they would handle it.

House Fire - 2 Story, 3 Trapped Occupants, Left hand side of house fully involved (Top and Bottom Story), Entry on the right side at the top and centre back and front on bottom story.

Crew/Trucks Available - 1 x Type 2 Pumper with 4 x CABA, 2 x Rural 34's With 2 x CABA sets each & 1 x 14 No CABA.  Each truck has a crew of 5 with everyone BA trained (14 is a new mitsi canter dualcab).  Mains water is available but is approx. 200 metres to the nearest hydrant.

Give your thoughts on what you would do from first appliance arrival right thru to containment.

Have Fun

Country Fire Service / Brigade Level Training
« on: July 12, 2006, 05:40:22 PM »
Gday Folks,

Not sure if this is in the right spot but im sure someone will move it.

Anyway.

Just curious, how does a brigade keep up its skill levels if it doesnt have any in house training?

Been thinking about this for a while and even though what im about to suggest would mean taking more time out of Vollies busy lives but it would improve safety on the fire ground.

What if State HQ were to implement a yearly training roster for brigades to complete in house?  e.g 1 training per month on the basics like pumping and hose work etc.

Would this be too much pressure on brigades to complete?

What do people think and what things should/would be included?

SAMFS / MFS Appliance Responses
« on: June 14, 2006, 07:10:39 PM »
Gday Folks,

Just wondering if anyone can shed some light on something for me.

Does anyone know why 204 (rescue appliance) is responded to alarm calls etc along with 205 etc....

Does 204 carry structural gear or is purely man power?

Country Fire Service / PPE
« on: April 01, 2006, 11:19:10 AM »
Gday,

Just curious as to how some brigades are coping with having two different lots of PPE.  PBI and Nomex/Proban

Technically you should carry both with you to a job as you never know what you may find when you arrive but really where do we store this gear?

anyone got any ideas?
