I'd hate to be the one making up 900+ metres of hose!! If the fires in that far just let it burn

Forestry SA get quite knarky if they lose too many trees.  A Forestry SA worker once told me (true or not, im not sure) each fully grown pine tree is worth $30 each.  Thats quite a lot of dosh over a 1000HA(?) block of pines.

And they dont have a big enough budget to replace large amounts of trees that are lost by fire.

They do 10-15 jobs a year so probably a refurb???? But who knows maybe a new one??

What are peoples opinions on really quiet brigades getting new appliances?

Yes it is good for morale to have a brand spankin new one in the shed but is it a wasted couple hundred thousand dollars a brand newie going to a brigade that will barely use it.

Are they better off just getting hand me downs??

I remember someone saying to me the general rule of thumb was -

Brigades that attend:

0-20 - hand me down every 10 years (so roughly a 10 year old refurb and they will keep it until its 20)
20-50 - will keep there truck for the full 20 years and replaced with a newbie.
50+ - new truck every 10 years.

Now obviously this isnt set in cement but just a general guide.

Well at least 4 to ride the truck (as per sops) and at least two to change the battery.  One on the ladder and one footing the ladder.  :-D

Sorry that was pretty lame.

and noone will go outside the group for fear of stirring up too much shiite and making a name for themself.....

I dont want to stir scheiße here but seriously grow up...its your safety!  Take it to the minister if you have to.

How would you feel if one of your fellow firies was killed or burned because of the lack of PPE.  I realise we used to use nomex but there was a change for a reason.

Sorry to step on some toes but you cant sit on your donkey any longer!  If someone has taken it higher then good on em and why the hell arent those higher people doing something to fix it!

They say the paid staff are there to help the vollies.

SO WHY ARENT THEY HELPING THEM???

Surely they would know about the situation by now.

depends on the what sort of hoe you are talking about?  :-D

We carry two rake hoes.  Dont need any more as there is only ever two people on the truck willing to use them.

It will cause a nice mess one day.  Ambos will be attending to the patient in the car seat and the car will ignite/explode because no one disconnected the battery etc and the firies werent called until it was too late.

Coroner will have a field day

The point is that I might be 7 lengths of hoe from the truck and on burnt ground in a safe environment where by the time i can get to the truck the threat has passed or staying at the end of the hose is safer than running through unburnt scrub to get to the appliance where i am more likely to get caught.

How long is 7 lengths of a hoe?

One thing i have never liked about the way the burnover procedure is done is how you have to hold the branch out from under the rear cabin shield.

Would be nice to have something fitted to where the montiors go that squirts a fog of water over the crew deck.

Would this work?

Does the new cab halo system cover the rear crew deck also?

Did you see the CFA crew on the ABC special the other night? The did a demo of a burnover and they used woolen blankets fro protection on the back!! And this is after Linton.

I thought they were also under a shield as well?

I agree to some extent.

What if that crew went to waikerie and sat on there asses the whole time?  One nights rest would be all they need.

You would hope the volunteer in question would have the common sense not to respond if they were feeling tired etc.  but there are some cranks out there that just dont know when to stop!

Gday,

What books do people have that are fire related?  Non Fiction or Fiction

All i got is "tried by fire" - History of the CFS.

Just purchased a book called "3000 degrees" from the states.  About a fire company (think FDNY) who battled a warehouse fire.

I dont think anyone is too worried about the damage the rain caused.....The rain itself outweighs the damage it seems
