If the proverbial brown stuff hits the fan this fire season (god forbid) maybe the SA Government will open their eyes up and start giving better funding to CFS although i think that is unlikely

OFF Topic / Yr 12 Muck up day
« on: November 05, 2010, 01:11:09 PM »
year 12 muck up day!

Gone are the good old days of dusting your teachers with flour and hosing them off with warm water.....

having said that...the big smilie face with roundup on the oval is still my favourite.....

I remember throwing water bombs off the top balcony on my final day as a year 12 student  but then again that couldnt top my last day of primary school when i stuffed toilet paper in the exhaust pipe of one of the teachers cars

The grass is starting to grow abit down here in the LSE especially on the Mount Burr Road but it may take a while to dry off unless we get a few good days of reasonably warm weather between now and December 1st although without making it sound like an understatement this season is shaping up to be an interesting one

Any chance that this new CFS promotional trailer will be present at the Mount Gambier spring show in 4 1/2 weeks time  :|

Sounds like the pollies are digging their own graves by doing these budget cuts but why put the public's safety at risk by reducing aerial fire fighting as well as discontinuing the community bushfire preparedness program

Next thing you know the government might wanna change the brigades who monitor alarms from volunteer to paid this would cause alot of problems  :x

Country Fire Service / Re: MT LOFTY FIRE TOWER
« on: September 12, 2010, 07:17:40 PM »
The firetower is passed its used by date anyway... The vollies that run it have done a great job, and that needs to be recognised. But in these days of mobile phones, sat navs, and the GRN, its no longer that useful.

In 6 years i have never had a fire reported by the tower prior to half a dozen triple zeros.

I agree with you on the statement that mobile phones, sat navs and GRN are more commonly used Alex but bear in mind without the fire towers like Mount Lofty,Mount Crawford, Mount Edward and so on we would have a whole lot more destructive scrub and forest fires if there wasnt anyone to watch over pine plantations and national parks during fire season/summer and report in the first sight of smoke

SAAS / Re: SAAS Making it harder to Volunteer !!!!
« on: June 10, 2010, 09:50:27 AM »
I did notice in the local paper yesterday that Penola SAAS are seeking permission for a full time paramedic to be stationed there cause of the decline in volunteer enrolments which isnt such a bad thing considering that its hard alot of times to even pull a crew from alot of volunteer stations

Meanwhile I will keep my current pager limping along, just have to keep turning it on as it has a habit of turning itself off.

Mine does that as well Darren and its way past the life expectancy that a samsung pager lives for

I have looked at the Apollo gold black pagers on wipath website and they are pretty good to all standards and having black makes it look more professional compared to the proposed yellow ones we are meant to be issued with

« on: May 12, 2010, 09:05:28 PM »
It depends on the area though Alex for example a tree over the road job is responded to by a brigade that has a chainsaw and chainsaw certified operators pending on the size of the tree more than 1 appliance is paged

Does anyone remember the old Link pagers we all hard prior to samsung ones being issued those were a solid unit that had about 3 or 4 selectable alerts and the volume got louder and louder if it was in beep mode  :-)
