OFF Topic / Re: Monopoly

This is the official line from the company.

Hackers don’t have a “Monopoly” on cheating

Hasbro Australia has issued the following response to reports that the Barossa Valley’s success in winning the recent Monopoly elections and securing the prime position on the new Australian Here & Now Monopoly board was the result of a hacking campaign.

Australia’s Marketing Manager for Monopoly, Amanda Blackhall said, “While it is not possible to prevent people from hacking a website if they are determined enough (even US government and Microsoft websites have been the victims of attacks), all measures were taken to pre-empt and ensure any attempts to do so would not undermine the integrity of the Monopoly election campaign.

‘We worked with the hosting company to stop attacks that were detected in a manner that would attempt to protect legitimate voters.  Our ISP company work 24 hours, 7 days a week and as soon as they recognized any hacking attempt, they immediately took steps to block this attempt.

“While the hackers concerned might have believed that their attempts were successful, they in fact had very little impact on the excellent results Barossa achieved.  Barossa’s success can however, be attributed to the people in the region networking with family, friends and related industries to ensure all got behind the campaign and voted”.

$9.6 million for the establishment of a new SAMFS fire station in the southern suburbs over the next 4 years.

And I believe approximately $4.7 million of that is for the construction of the station, does anyone else think that is a lot of money for a fire station ?? Remember this does not include land acquisition as it is already owned by SAFECOM.

Considering the CFS still has stations out there without power and toilets it does seem like a lot of dosh. One would have to assume this will be at least a two bay station, I'm guessing something similar to Golden Grove. Not bad for a station that will probably only get about 600 or 700 jobs, and only about 350 in its primary area.

Then again it could be worse - we could be the SES and have to run on $11 million for the whole service, interesting considering they actually spent over $12 million this financial year.

At least a 1250GPM mid mount pump, with a seperate high pressure stage for hose lines.

Remote controlled roof mounted monitor.

B.A. seats in the cabin.

Automatic gearbox.

A very crank Federal Q siren with a kickass air horn.

Well this is SA Firefighter, not surprising that some paid MFS staff may occassionally frequent this site, not everyone here has to post 18 messages a day.

Some brigades have them, there was some training issues to be sorted out but I believe this is now fixed and they have been given the green light to use them.

its baaaack

Some of them never went anywhere, if you know where to look they have been there the whole time.

I think the ones some of you were referring too just happened to coincidently break at the same time poor Kieran was copping it from DAIS. Rest assured though there will always be one going somewhere if you know who to speak to.

Country Fire Service / Re: New Members & Training
« on: April 07, 2007, 02:14:57 PM »
Cam this is just plain wrong..

The way many brigades that I have been involved in do it like this...

Once you decide to recruit a particular person or persons they are required to sign the registration book. From then on they are a CFS member and covered by all the usual OH&S regs and rules, this means that you also have to provide them with the necessary tools and equipment for them to stay safe in the CFS environs.

Once they are signed up the next thing you should be doing is going through the CFS induction process with them, this covers all the OH&S stuff, a bit about the Act / Regs, a bit about who is in charge in your Station / Group / Region etc, any relevant local brigade policies and procedures that you may have, also what training pathways they may wish to pursue etc etc, this normally takes an hour or two of their first night.

Next step should be to either fit them out in PPE or size them up so that gear can be ordered for them. They should be given all the equipment that is needed for training - Turnout gear, boots, helmets, gloves, goggles, dust masks etc etc.

From here on they should start doing training in your brigade, it might be one on one to get them up to speed on what everything does and where it is kept or it might be just as part of your standard training nights, you also need to get them booked on to a BFF1 course within 3 months of them signing the book - this is CFS policy. Continue to train them in-house until they have completed their BFF1, then once they have successfully done that and the brigade officers are happy that the person is capable of performing the duties of an operation firefighter advise them that they can now respond to incidents.

Some brigades issue pagers to recruits before they become operational so they can keep an eye on what is going on in the brigade and training etc, others wait until they have done BFF1 and use it as a reward for now completing all the training. Personally I find issuing pagers before making them operational beneficial, that way the person already understands how they work and what the response messages are like before they suddenly have to start responding to calls in the middle of the night.

From what I heard it sounded like MFS went to all of those calls in Seaford area. I think if they come in on the alerts, SOC have to call MFS and respond them as well.

Probably should be taken off line then, I think there is something in the OH&S regs about having to provide a safe working environment, sitting in a closed up truck filling with Carbon Monoxide fumes doesn't sound safe to me.

At least with the BA sets in the cab the crew in the back will be ok, pity the driver and OIC though.

The Dennis curse continues...

I agree with the Tillerman, Seaford should now focus on being able to cover the rural areas down there. Maybe even keep two big trucks so that you can still go on Strike Teams. I can't see any benefit in putting the Dennis down their now, I think one of the reasons it was suggested it needed to go there was to put their road crash gear on, a 34P can do that just as well.

My tip on the Dennis is that it will go to Morphett Vale, it would replace their 24P nicely.

It is a support brigade, to assist with admin and logistics in HQ during bad days and big jobs. It is open to anyone that is interested, I believe Mick Ayre is the brigade Captain so give them a call if pushing paper and pens in the big house is your thing.

And I thought it was illegal for anyone to take action from a scanner ? Three minutes is a very good response time ?

It was also illegal until very recently to record something off the television with your video recorder and play it back, sometimes it is not practicable to enforce every law.

Most of the stuff the news crews get is from the scanner and pager programs.

Ventilation, whether tactical, hydraulic, forced or natural is something that needs to be undertaken with great care.. I have seen on too many occasions things go terribly wrong due to incorrect ventilation.

Could you give us some of your experiances, I would be interested to hear how things turned pear shaped. I know we ventilate all the time either by mechanical or natural means and things have always gone well.

Venitlation is something that needs to be done by experianced people, no point venting if you dont have an exhaust point and don't know what your doing.

All our officers carry 003 and 604 keys in their gear, you may like to check that you get the correct 604 key for your panels though. I carry a 604 short and a 604 long - for some reason there are two variations and they don't seem interchangeable.

What I heard from the people over there was one of the issues is their suitability in steep terrain, apparently the clincher was at a fire in Clarendon when one of them was driving up a moderate hill, the front wheels started to become airborne for no apparent reason - apparently was witnessed by a few people and everyone was just going F%#K.

Needless to say the paperwork from that incident probably helped the issue a bit. I believe they are being moved out to flatter areas now, not sure what CFS do about the trucks that are still out there though. I would have thought brigades like Summertown would now have a good reason to ask for a new truck.

Also I hear that Inman Valley will get their new 34 Monday night (tomorrow), a new station and now a new rig - better get the application forms out for those wanting to transfer.

Country Fire Service / Re: Mt Barker 24P
« on: December 17, 2006, 01:06:35 PM »
Barker will actually decide to de-register themselves as a CFS brigade and then form their own fire service, supplying a range of fire and EMS resources. MFS will then move in and a bitter row will evolve, crews will arrive and park on others hoses and fights will break out at jobs, crews in BA in going house fires will even have to deal with crews from other services turning off their air sets, some of this will be captured by the media and there will be public outcry.

Eventually Barker will prove that they provide a service equally as well as their paid brothers and the MFS will be asked by the community to leave town, Barker will once again reign supreme and will remain as a private fire service supported by the community and won't have to deal with the crap the CFS deals out to them anymore.

Just the way I see it unfolding in the future.

Can't really see them offering to send any CFS crews away this week with hot weather forecast until at least Friday, then you have Xmas so I doubt they would be volunteering to send us anywhere then as well.

It would be at least Boxing day I reckon before CFS crews went anywhere, but with the shortage of crews available for local strike teams I think CFS would be seriously questioning our ability to go anywhere else.

Also looks like things have settled down a bit over there now, hopefully they can get on top of things a bit before more hot weather hits.

I have a list which has every brigade in the state on it (including some that don't exist any more). It runs about 5 pages, I will try and get it scanned and put up somewhere at some stage.

Hey Firefrog, do we still have a gallery that I can use to post pics / files to ??

Hey cranky I love referring to our bible, but yes there are some GO's and DGO's that dont

I have actually witnessed them turning up in a vehicle and no appliance in sight.

Well put what you saw in writing and pass it onto the Region. Breaching the SOP's / COSO's is not something that they can ignore and shouldn't be taken lightly, if a brigade is willing to break one rule how many others are they also breaking.

Take this seriously people, remember that the big Mitcham Shopping Centre fire initially came in as an automatic fire alarm, as have many of the other large stucture fires in this state.

Fire alarms need to be treated as a fire until proved otherwise - no exceptions.

And further to this my opinion (and after all it is only my opinion) says that such a statement is an affront to the work of Arthur,Sandy and Phil.  What most of the ignorant people don't know, is that Arthur and Phil (Sandy i'm not sure of) are VOLLIES and were VOLLIES well long before they gained employment with the organisation. And no they weren't vollies in a 5 call out a year brigade, they've got extensive experience in an urban fringe brigade that also has huge rural risks.

That's fine Gongbeater, but the CFS Tech Services guys don't allocate the appliances, Region do. Yeah the trucks we are getting now are good, some are excellent, but they only build what the Regions predict they will need.
