Nothing like a pair of Air Horns to strongly suggest to a vacant minded motorist that they should perhaps move...

Your a useless fu ck mate. Your post bore no relevance to the thread, hence my reply. You and several others are the reason this forum has never been more than a joke.

Hiding behind an alias and doing nothing more than trolling is not contributing.

Mods feel free to do whatever you like.

Straight to the heart! Have you tried meditation? You seem very cranky. There are many reasons why this forum has never been more than a joke, and most of them are pretty much the same reasons why the CFS in many respects is nothing more than a joke.

And perhaps just to clear something up, as your anger seems to be clouding your reading comprehension, my original post was, in a horribly offense manner, trying to suggest that we have no training for correct siren operation and that as 90% of CFS volunteers are unable to operate the basic controls correctly, why should they get an extra two tones to try and use properly?

Do you give a station that can't operate a 24 a Heavy Pumper? Of course not! (oh wait...)

I guess if your experience is only the MFS, or an MFS wannabe Brigade, then thats the way you think. They are wedded to that thinking, but it's actually flawed. Maybe its just that SOs are control freaks and still want to feel like they are part of the game. Maybe its just that MFS guys cant drive....I don't know. Actually, as I said, it's the driver's responsibility. Failure to correctly operate the warning devices that contributes to or causes an accident/incident, and the driver wears it - HE/SHE is in legal control of the vehicle. The officer SHOULD be doing much more important filtered on the way to a job, like listening/talking on all 3 (or more) radios , listening for oncoming appliances, pre-plans, crew allocations, thinking about bomber use,and a 1000 other more useful things at a fire, than worrying about when to change the siren from wail to yip.

But then, you wont agree Numbers.....life's like that

I agree with your basic premise regarding who is "in control" of the vehicle as per legislation. At the end of the day, anything that vehicle does is the responsibility of the driver.

In terms of common sense, (especially when driving manual vehicles) I think that the less the driver has to do the better. Not to mention that only a small portion of CFS vols are regular truck drivers and an even smaller portion are regular emergency drivers.

The setup of the siren controls in the current 34P's is a pain, but way better than having it at the rear of the console like the older 24/24P. The Type 2 Pumper with the ACS console accessible by both driver and OIC, plus the OIC stomp switch is a pretty good setup that allows either person to operate the necessary controls.

Sure the OIC has a few other things he should be doing route, but so has the driver (Appliance siting, Booster ID, Hydrant ID, not hitting other vehicles, etc, etc) and is it really that hard to mash a stomp switch to change from wail to yelp and back again while you're talking on the radio? (although the same could be said for a driver side stomp switch)

As long as the driver doesn't need to take his hands off the wheel, it could well work. I've little experience with stomp switches on the driver side, only the old ACCO High beam stomp switch. So it could work...

If only the trucks were auto, it'd be so much easier...

Thanks for the useful info.

Someone's gotta provide it, god knows you can't.

difficult to bother using anything remotely concerned with sirens when the CFS do such a wonderful job of making it so user friendly for the driver to operate (remember he is the one with the responsibility for the safe passage of the appliance - not the officer). Putting a small, multifunction control 90degs from your line of sight and in the darkest place in the vehicle so that you are forced to take your eyes off the road, just as u approach the higher risk areas, like intersections,  is certainly the best way to get people to screw it up and then not be bothered using it properly - take a bow CFS

At least SAAS can get it almost right with a foot change up button as well as a duplicate on the vehicle horn. Much easier, and safer

I'm sure CFS are sick of my near miss forms regarding them :)

Simply put, the driver drives and the Officer operates the warning devices. The driver shouldn't have to be doing anything more than driving, and the OIC really should be experienced enough to read the traffic and road and switch between wail and yelp at the appropriate times.

It's not hard.

Go read up. Missing more than 3 training sessions in a row, without written explaination is pretty much grounds to be turfed.

It's all there in the Regs, its nothing new.

I'm still stumped at the fact that we moved from using an almost internationally recognizable fireground evacuation signal to one that is used during the normal course of appliance movements during an incident.

Very intelligent.

Good god, vollo's can't use the current Wail/Yelp/Manual/Hi-Lo/Mix/PA and you expect them to deal with another TWO tones? They'll have a nervous breakdown!

Actually, I think I'll change that to: "Can't use wail/yelp correctly - let alone anything else"

I may be wrong, but its just a shame we did not end up with someone from a more urban focused background...

I'm pretty sure that he is from NT Fire & Rescue, which covers the Urban side of things. BushfiresNT would be the Bushfire dudes up north?

Although on the whole, I'm too sure of how much "Urban" focus there is in a Service with 180 Career Firies.

Only time will tell, but a fresh set of eyes no matter what their background can't be a bad thing.

6739264 it seems you are trolling to stir up other users. Its easy to sit on your scanner cranking it up and make judgements based on a 2 or 3 line MCT message. I would guess that most of the 2nd alarm appliances were turned back straight away, what is the harm in over resourcing a job anyway?? If another incident happened at same time they would all be availble to respond so no damage done.

Me, stirring people up, but asking common sense questions at the same time?

Have you read any of my previous posts?

Without getting people as wound up as it would seem has happened, I was merely asking about the validity of having an Automatic 2A response, without it taking into account of the actual structure involved. The risk classes are pretty wide ranging and as such it would seem that a one size fits all SOP for the different risk classes, rather than allowing the S/O on scene to advise Comms of wht he/she actually requires, is perhaps not the best way to do things?

God forbid I ask a question on a discussion forum?

Just following the SOP's

SOP 4 mate.

K99 or persons reported for a c-risk is automatic second alarm.

Thanks! I don't know what these "SOP" things are... I was querying if the S/O on scene was able to/did stop the turning out of an Automatic second alarm. Can you actually fit that many firies and hoses around a shed that small?

how can u say over supplying appliances to a minor incident, were u there? how do you know the shed wasn't full of gas bottles of jerry cans full of fuel, how do u know the sehd wasnt attached to a house? maybe MFS should listen to you and under supply these so called minor incidents then when your shed catches fire and a single pump turns up but cant handle it you loose the shed and your house, use a bit of common sense.

I know it was your first SAMFS job and all, just relax... If, as a rule of thumb, 2 x appliances and some hard work can tackle a house fire, how does that scale for a 5m x 3m shed? No issue if the upgrade is for a given risk, but I'm just interested in the Automatic 2A. If my shed caught fire and a single pump rocked up and couldn't stop it spreading into my house, I would be seriously concerned about the crews competency and would suggest they went back to Drill Squad. It's amazing to see what proactive, gutsy, firefighting can achieve.

sometimes you just need appliances for water and all the reasons that F7 has

Sure, but automatically for a Shed smaller than my bedroom?

Nothing wrong with upgrading and also two reasons for it are A) The crews are in PBI, and at a going job that's hard work, and B)fresh resources to give the crews a break and also share the workload around the job makes sense to me.

We've said it before and we will say it again, better to have resources responding than to wait till it hits the fan, and a STOP CALL never hurt anyone.

Christ, if you need fresh crews and resources for a "Hard work" job that is 15m2 maybe the boys should be heading into the gym a little more often ;)

thanks TFT and SA FIREY, great to see some ppl with common sense about themselves, cheers

Asking questions of a procedure that appears to not take into account the actual incident is a lack of common sense? Sorry I don't agree with everything you and your agency does.

At least they are not wearing goggles to house fires numbers...maybe that should be suggested to MFS.

According to Mr. Corcoran, SAMFS rural gloves are terrible - can't think what their goggles must be like, if they even have them.

Oh no! Not the big bad UFU! What are they going to do? Put some more paperwork bans on? The Union has that much that they could be making a point about and they're not. Which leads me into...

It will "ONLY" take "LESS THAN 30 MINUTES" to get an aerial into Mt. Barker? And this is ok because ITS THE SAME WITH SAMFS AREA? Are you serious? 2x ALP's for the entire state is a joke. It still fails me as to why there are not a minimum of 3, North/Central/South... Call the union!

You sound a bit against the UFU numbers, have you had a bad experience with them or have you quit their membership. Last time i checked i got a nice little pay rise and kept my conditions of employment, oh and the gear we use is not terrible because of them

I fully support Firefighters Unions, I just do not believe that the UFU are really performing or pushing the issues that they should. As I said, 2 ALP's for the entire state is a joke. Are their priorities in the right place? Mass Rally action for LSL entitlements, but not for Fireground OH&S issues? (Radio allocation vs. SOP, etc)

If you're all about maintaining the status quo and getting your 3.5% payrise in Jan, then sure, the UFU are fantastic.

I was refering to the original document that CFS issued to Adelaide Fire, which stated that on a day of catastrophic fire danger, hundreds of people would die and thousands of homes would be lost. There original paperwork never had the 'in the case of a fire'... it seemed that people were just going to spontaneously drop.

You seem to have lost your normal sense of humor?

As I said earlier, they can't train their vols and equip them let alone train staff and equip them, and those staff will be part of the UFU and they won't settle for second rate gear and lack of training.

An aerial in Mt Barker ? Why, only take a bronto a from Adelaide less than 30 mins, no worse than waiting for an aerial at Christies or Gawler?

As I said CFS has an urban risk for sure, but NOTHING compared to the CFA with  towns like Ballarat, Geelong etc

Oh no! Not the big bad UFU! What are they going to do? Put some more paperwork bans on? The Union has that much that they could be making a point about and they're not. Which leads me into...

I dont know how people can say MFS have better gear have you seen what gloves they wear to rural jobs???. yes agree CFS needs to pick up its game but it comes down to MONEY....If MFS want to move into CFS area's then they better get some 4wd tankers.....
What gloves do they wear? Are they worse than the single piece leather gloves CFS issue? Are they just Nitriles? Do you have a brain?

Ok: CFS Structure gloves are terrible, most trucks are terrible, Wildfire PPE is terrible, Structural PPE is good!,  Rescue PPE doesn't exist, Rescue equipment is terrible, Comms are terrible, Boots are terrible, we don't get socks although they are listed as PPE (terrible), the Field uniform is terrible, cheap branches are terrible...

Do I go on?

Isn't this the CFS definition? Do you know what the term "Potential Impact" means? or are we now using FDR's as a retrospective term?

    * These are the worst conditions for a bush or grass fire.
    * If a fire starts and takes hold, it will be extremely difficult to control and will take significant fire fighting resources and cooler conditions to bring it under control.
    * Spot fires will start well ahead of the main fire and cause rapid spread of the fire.  Embers will come from many directions.
    * Homes are not designed or constructed to withstand fires in these conditions.
    * The safest place to be is away from bushfire prone areas.

Country Fire Service / Re: Requirements to Drive CFS Vehicles on Fireground
« on: December 20, 2010, 08:05:09 PM »
Provision/Probational License holders can't respond P1

Thank god they finally changed this. Under the old COSO, with P plates you could drive a truck P1 but not a vehicle under 4.5t... go figure.

As SAAS has recently discovered......lots of crashes = lots of cash lost to insurance companies!

....and the majority of this is because of stupid driver behaviors.........   filtered Gen Y's!!

I'm going to go ahead and chalk this up to the "Run silent, run deep" mentality that seems to afflict 99% of SAAS drivers. Running under lights until you get to an intersection/traffic and then firing up the sirens as you move INTO the hazard is NOT how you drive an emergency vehicle.

I guess it all comes down to how we teach the basics. Too many people use the Fire Truck as they would a car. Sticking to the left hand lane, squeezing between the footpath and traffic in the middle/left lanes.

Its not hard. It's a big truck. Drive in the far right lane. Get over early into oncoming lanes. Make noise. Stop at red lights/stop signs. Use as much of the road as possible.

At the end of the day, drive to your abilities and just because you're going under P1 conditions, doesn't mean your 12t bullet can handle any better than any other truck on the road.

Awww, it's so cute to watch die hard SES members rally around a failed system.

It'd be interesting to see the call response stats for the SES from recipt of call to a resource (ANY resource SES/MFS/CFS) arriving on scene.

And then at what point it goes from mass defaulting of calls to getting strike teams into areas...

There has to be a better way to do things, and I don't think that SACAD is going to be the answer.

But why isn't SOT paged for incidents, net call and other info that relate to them only, not medSTAR?

You tend to make the assumption that the Pages that you see on the paging scanner sites are ALL paging traffic that is sent out. That is not the case.

In my line of work, we can be turned out in numerous ways, some the public are aware of, others not. R/T, Station Bells, T/P, MDT, Phone, Pager, Crash turnout system...

Things happen that you don't need to be aware of.

Get over it.

Is it that hard to refill via the collectors and backfill during pumping operations?
