How are you going to get a union to do anything for you if you don't pay them....Pay peanuts you get monkeys..... I believe that it's about $10 a week per firefighter to be a member of the UFU. And you are worried about $20 a year for a whole brigade. If your brigade is not a member of the VFBA i can't see how you can complain about what they don't do for you.

As far as i am aware.... And i have had a little to do with the building of a new station. There is only a design for a rural, rural urban, urban rural and group base. All of which are based around a shed.

Fire Fighter Training / Re: sprinkler/hydrant booster systems
« on: May 09, 2006, 05:41:26 PM »
Just a thought.... bit out of the square.  Why should the SACFS or MFS  be responsible for supplying pumps to boost a sprinkler system. Why not have owners of such buildings install at time of construction on site stand alone booster pumps?

IMHO the only thing i feel the 'Rescue Officer' Should be wearing is some head protection (working around cranes) and gloves if he was going to do and lifting, ropes etc. Otherwise why not be comfortable at a job like that.....

Draft of the SLA between MFS and CFS now in existence. Makes for some interesting reading. It also includes the promotion of '000' for use by all CFS brigades.

Firstly, Yes Lion are here in SA. Secondly, surely someone who make the PPC is in the best position to clean / maintain it. This way like Firefrog says, they certify it suitable to return to service, rather than Jo Blow from XYZ Dry cleaners, cleaning it, getting his money and he don't really care (or know) what the real purpose of the stuff he just cleaned is.

Lastly, don't hold your breath about getting flash hoods real soon. It still has a long process to run before they can be purchased. Tender is to get pricing etc and a plan in place for when it does happen.

As an employer,  there was no room in any act or award that allowed for attendance to a call out with a volunteer emergency service. Basically if you left work or didn't show up at work you could have been fired / warned. However i am 90% sure that the new IR laws have a clause in there that allows for attandance of volunteers at emergencies to perform their role. I have acopy of the new IR Act and Regs but i am having trouble finding the clause, when i do i shall extract the appropriate information and post.

Incident Operations / Re: New Fixed Alarm System
« on: March 02, 2006, 07:39:26 AM »
Firefrog is right. Any monies collected for Alarm attendance and/or monitoring in the past could be subject to reimbursement to the payee, unless there is a contract signed by the Chief. To the best of my knowledge as i have discussed with CFS staff, there is none!

If you are going to start to charge be very careful as when the new fees / rates come into effect someone might look silly when a premises owner / occupier gets a bill from HQ for a sum considerably less than $250 ?!?!?!

I was asked a couple of weeks ago to be a member of a working party to set up Policy on fire alarm monitoring. (CFS Playing catch up). Have had one interesting meeting so far. I think it will be a good thing for CFS and for brigades that get a lot of un-justified calls. At last we will be able to charge some building owners / occupiers for "False Alarms".

I stand corrected but i think the orders had to be in by the 18th of March. Not exactly sure of the date but was mid march 2006.

FLash Hoods ..... I was at the Region 2 Volinteer Managment Meeting (RVMM)a couple of months ago and that group (On behalf of all volunteers within Region 2) supported the principle of adopting a (Structural) flash hood for use by CABA operators. There has to be a FGP written, and SOP developed, type of flash hood (Must meet appropriate standards) etc etc etc.... Mr Bret Pollini is as far as i know looking after the matter. It was also said at this RVMM that NO flash hoods should be worn until this policy and type are endorsed. I would however er on the side of caution if i was to see someone using one as if it did not meet the appropriate standard (which ever that may be) and something was to happen to the operator ???? who knows what ramifications there could be. Howver i do think that we are years behind, and they should not be wasting any time getting them adopted for use.. By the way funding for flash hoods will come from current budgets. ie. no extra money will be given to groups / brigades for the purchase of flash hoods.

Country Fire Service / Re: money to cover our costs
« on: February 06, 2006, 05:46:32 PM »
I don't think money would change alot of things. Firstly, CFS staff get no where near paid what they are worth, so why should the money for being a "CFS Retained Firey" be any diffrent. Secondly, in the areas most affected by diminishing numbers of volunteers are those where they just don't have the people in the communities as they used to, younger generations leave country towns and move to regional areas for employment, leaving the older generation with more work and less time to spare. Most farmers would rather just fight a fire with their own farm fire fighting unit (CFS insurance covers you and your private unit), Thirdly i know of two towns that have both CFS and MFS retained, the CFS brigades are growing and the MFS stations strugle for staff?
