If you're laying that much hose maybe you should have gone in from the other side of the plantation compartment

I wonder if the bearing accuracy is compromised once they get a sway up in strong wind

There are many dust sightings here too, but the difference is that other towers can be asked if they see anything in that area, and from a different angle dust often can be identified as just that. Plus dust doesn't have a tendency to build like smoke plumes do...

I agree the fire tower isn't as usueful in the Adelaide Hills as it once was.

We've been to a 'fire' at night recently that was called in by someone on their mobile and it turned out to be a well-lit low-lying cloud  :-D  So misinformation comes from all sorts of sources. Just as long as they were intended as emergency calls and people aren't being malicious.

I'd hate for a bystander (or a fire tower) to hesitate before putting in a call because we were annoyed at well-meaning false alarms - always better to turn back crews that aren't needed than call for them once the fire is well and truly going.

Research tells me that fire towers here use an alidade, so it is a non-magnetic reading and I guess they would be calibrated to true north. I'm not sure it makes much difference if it is magnetic or true north, as they whole lot is triangulated with bearings from other towers, and if there is a magnetic difference then it would only be a few hundred metres if that and when you're travelling to the site you'd just look for smoke within this zone of error anyway?

Sorry, I missed in what way this was to do with the firies selling out?
Isn't it the community members bringing a claim against RFS and others?

Yet another challenge for CFS into the future - a society with a much greater propensity for litigation.

I guess it's a way to make yourself feel better when you just missed out (along with the other hundreds of applicants) to create intrigue, scandal and conspiracy surrounding the reasons as to why these few select superhumans got through.

Couldn't possibly be based simply on their aptitude, fitness and abilities --- could it?!?  :?  :-o

Tally ho Sir Littlejohn, I do mean marquee.
I do archery too, so there are also actual strings on my recurve longbow.
Walking backwards it shall be, let the word spread throughout the land.

OFF Topic / Drought
« on: March 10, 2007, 11:08:07 AM »
I got this email recently.
It's an issue that certainly affects CFS - both through increased fire risk and the impact on rural communities.
For all our rural stations doing it tough.
A poem from Murray Hardin.

RAIN FROM NOWHERE

His cattle didn’t get a bid, they were fairly filtered poor,

What was he going to do? He couldn’t feed them anymore,

The dams were all but dry, hay was thirteen bucks a bale,

Last month’s talk of rain was just a fairytale,

His credit had run out, no chance to pay what’s owed,

Bad thoughts ran through his head as he drove down Gully Road

“Gees, great Grandad bought the place back in 1898,

“Now I’m such a useless filtered, I’ll have to shut the gate.

“Can’t support my wife and kids, not like dad and those before,

“Christ, Grandma kept it going while Pop fought in the war.”

With depression now his master, he abandoned what was right,

There’s no place in life for failures, he’d end it all tonight.

There were still some things to do, he’d have to shoot the cattle first,

Of all the jobs he’d ever done, that would be the worst.

He’d have a shower, watch the news, then they’d all sit down for tea

Read his kids a bedtime story, watch some more TV,

Kiss his wife goodnight, say he was off to shoot some roos

Then in a paddock far away he’d blow away the blues.

But he drove in the gate and stopped – as he always had

To check the roadside mailbox – and found a letter from his Dad.

Now his dad was not a writer, Mum did all the cards and mail

But he knew the style from the notebooks that he used at cattle sales,

He sensed the nature of its contents, felt moisture in his eyes,

Just the fact his dad had written was enough to make him cry.

“Son, I know it’s filtered tough, it’s a cruel and twisted game,

“This life upon the land when you’re screaming out for rain,

“There’s no candle in the darkness, not a single speck of light

“But don’t let the demon get you, you have to do what’s right,

“I don’t know what’s in your head but push the bad thoughts well away

“See, you’ll always have your family at the back end of the day

“You have to talk to someone, and yes I know I rarely did

“But you have to think about Fiona and think about the kids.

“I’m worried about you son, you haven’t rung for quite a while,

“I know the road you’re on ‘cause I’ve walked every filtered mile.

“The date? December 7 back in 1983,

“Behind the shed I had the shotgun rested in the Brigalow tree.

“See, I’d borrowed way too much to buy the Johnson place

“Then it didn’t rain for years and we got bombed by interest rates,

“The bank was at the door, I didn’t think I had a choice,

“I began to squeeze the trigger – that’s when I heard your voice.

“You said ‘Where are you Daddy? It’s time to play our game’

“’ I’ve got Squatter all set up, you might get General Rain.’

“It really was that close, you’re the one that stopped me son,

“And you’re the one that taught me there’s no answer in a gun.

“Just remember people love you, good friends won’t let you down.

“Look, you might have to swallow pride and get a job in town,

“Just ’til things come good, son, you’ve always got a choice

“And when you get this letter ring me, ’cause I’d love to hear your voice.”

Well he cried and laughed and shook his head then put the truck in gear,

Shut his eyes and hugged his dad in a vision that was clear,

Dropped the cattle at the yards, put the truck away

Filled the troughs the best he could and fed his last ten bales of hay.

Then he strode towards the homestead, shoulders back and head held high,

He still knew the road was tough but there was purpose in his eye.

He called for his wife and children, who’d lived through all his pain,

Hugs said more than words – he’d come back to them again,

They talked of silver linings, how good times always follow bad,

Then he walked towards the phone, picked it up and rang his Dad.

And while the kids set up the Squatter, he hugged his wife again,

Then they heard the roll of thunder and they smelt the smell of rain.

I've done BA training on playground equipment. I highly recommend it. Two of us just followed the Lt up, over, through, around the play equipment, I went through most of my air from laughing so hard! We even climbed right up over the monkey bars - made me appreciate what you actually are capable of in full gear, and also the limitations of the set and thinking about twisting to get it through a tight squeeze and under a platform. Fantastic training. Not moving fast by any stretch of the imagination but using every muscle. Boy was I sore the next day! :-D

Here are some upcoming events:

We're probably all aware of the World Police and Fire Games by now, but there is also a conference and trade exhibition on 13th - 16th March.
http://www.2007wpfg.com/conference/conference.cfm

Also some Fire Protection Association events for those interested in changes to fire sprinkler standards, hazmat and the Fire Australia 2007 conference. Deadline for abstracts is April 13. If you're anything like me then at such exhibitions (as well as at stationary suppliers) I'm like a kid in a candy store. Plus it's a fine excuse to go to the Burswood resort in Perth  :-D

...what do you do when both the mets and your cfs brigade are responded to the same incident at the same time. Which station do you respond to? Do you evenly share your responses to each service? Do you favour the mets over cfs or vice versa?

This one is for information. Anyone who is part of the CFS would know that your own life/family/health/work comes first, and if you're busy then you're busy, now matter how much we'd like to be helping out. Some people have flexible employers, which is great and should be acknowledged and thanked at every opportunity. Volunteers employed within Government certainly enjoy a this level of support. I'm lucky in that both of my employers support me volunteering for CFS and I'm often allowed take time off after large incidents in lieu of making it up at a later date. I realise this is not always the case for many voluntees.

As for MFS, I am employed as a retained firefighter and there are certain expectations that go along with that employment. I am expected to be available for fire calls when I'm rostered on (which is most days outside my my normal working hours) and this sentiment is even writen under an SAMFS Administrative Procedure that outlines support for 'SAMFS Staff Involved in Other Organisations'.

So the answer is that if CFS and MFS are paged together, and I am available, my obligation is to MFS as an employee. But thankfully this rarely happens :)
