Country Fire Service / Re: Burnover Training
« on: January 11, 2007, 11:27:10 AM »
we were driving along either razorback or saddlebags roads, not too sure which one, all i can really remember is it getting f***ing hot, embers covering the truck, and me diving into the crew protection area with my branch spraying on a fog over the top of us...

i think it happened just as the southerly change came in. And it blew it back onto us. will find out full story from officer when we have a proper debrief (rather than the one held at 3:30 this morn)

in my opinion burn-over training is most probably the most important training you will ever do!!

i think it is irresponsible for brigades to have waited so long to do it, its not like it takes all that long to go through!!

P.S. this training saved our crews life at the Mount Bold fire last night!!

All Equipment discussion / Re: QAV's
« on: January 05, 2007, 05:11:29 PM »
we (seaford) have a 500L slip-on for our logistics car, but region wont ok it for use on the fire ground, so instead it is used as a pump trailer, and almost never leaves the station.

one great thing about it is we can put it on and take off the trqailer with 4 cadets!!

As for the effectiveness of QAV's from what i have seen they are awesome on the fireground as the can get in under low branches etc. without ripping lights off the roof.

All Equipment discussion / Re: NEW 34
« on: January 05, 2007, 05:03:15 PM »
McVale 34 had 2 jobs yesterday on jarred road, Seaford Meadows.

Appeared to perform quite well, although it may have gone home with some battle scars after the first job,

we managed to half rip the red beacon and ladder rack from the top of our 24...

Country Fire Service / Re: East Coast Strike Teams 2006
« on: December 18, 2006, 01:04:32 PM »
I think the two years thing is absolute bull twang...It should be done purely on experience, or OIC's opinion. I have done 4 years with the cadets, but only 6 months as a FF, so can't go on strike teams. But according to their stupid rules you could get guys who have been inactive for the last who knows how long that get to jump straight on a truck.

« on: December 01, 2006, 05:54:17 PM »
by "standard issue in our brigade" I mean that all members have been issued with them as part of their PPE... they are the only torches i have seen in use on the fire ground so far....apart form the Dolphin torches or maglights off the trucks.

It is true, Students can get Stage 1 (year 11) SACE points for BFF1. I have about 6 vet units and 2 SACE points because of it!!

Hopefully MFS will spread out the recruitment drive over a couple of years, so then younger people like me will at least have a chance to apply when they are old enough.

The standard issue torches in our brigade are UK4AA Dive Torches AKA. Mini Q , with a helmet clip. If you really wanted to you can buy conversion kits to turn them into LED powered torches from dive shops.

Country Fire Service / Re: GRN Paging Response codes
« on: November 11, 2006, 10:00:29 PM »
Seaford is actually 8334.

even though our primary  urban truck is a 24 pumper it has the code 8334 because there is suposedly a conflict in the system if brigades in the same group have the same suffix, that is also why happy valley 24P is 8032

Further to this topic, Does anybody have a list of the codes on the Pager Feed website, I think they are called "cap codes" or something, as they would probably be more useful for all stations!

We only have about 3 drivers during the day, and lots of the time we default because we cant get one of them,

What are the rules for getting your MR?? I have heard it is 1 year driving experience, but is this full licence or are your P's included??

I cant wait till I have mine!!

I cant see the Proper (old, crusty) CFS Logo anywhere on it...only the Taxi Logo

Which in my opinion is a good thing, but others always seem to beg to differ

That would be sweet but no they have a map of the local lights and their code's and you ring a number and say i wan't blah blah light changed in htis direction and then it'd done for about 5 minutes or something??

BINGO...and that is why we never do it!!

We have control over the traffic lights on the corner of comercial and seaford (have never seen them used though), but a nice set of Flashing lights on seaford road would be good!! as that is where we have most of our problems with cars not wanting to let us out

the first person sets it off manually from the station box

that sounds like it would be the best option then. as you would at least know that the station is open.

being urban, we don't have the luxury of a station siren. but one would be great to inform general public drivers that there may be a fire truck about to pull out...we almost had some idiot  drive into us yesterday arvo, they were probably thinking "f%&king pushy council truck trying to drive out in front of me...ohhh I can hear sirens, I wonder where the fire truck is?"

Sounds like a good idea, anything that can/will give the public more of a heads up about a fire is good in my books!!
