Country Fire Service / Re: West Coast
« on: November 11, 2006, 01:46:23 PM »
Have you seen the CFS Media releases that have been issued today.  Four reports issued so far, the latest at 1437hrs.  Nothing more reported than "poses a public threat" etc.

After Wangary, every time a fire develops on the West coast, I cringe, and hope that it is contained QUICKLY.  Good luck to the West Coast crews working this one.  I wonder if they have air support?

Country Fire Service / GRN Paging Response codes
« on: November 11, 2006, 12:58:32 AM »
Can anybody supply a complete list of CFS GRN reponse codes, or is there an established reference site somewhere?

I know this question has been asked before, but I have only ever seen partial lists.

For those who may not know WTF I'm talking about, the 4 digit codes that appear at the end of a typcial response page. (I say 4 digit, as this covers majority of CFS brigades, other codes represent MFS/SES units etc). These codes indicate which brigade(s) are being responded.

Anyway, I am after a list that can be referred back to when required to satisfy curiosity as to whom is getting responded to the calls we all see on the GRN Pager string.

Maybe this list could be put together and made available directly from this site or (Pip, if you're reading this) the CFS Promo site - either as a seperate page or added to the details of each brigade.

Your right, CFS aren't building 24's currently.  This is a shame, as in a lot of circumstances were more practical than the current sized 24P.  With CFS obviously going away from single cab appliances (not including refurbs) we are seeing a physically larger generation of appliance.  At least the more recent batch of 24P's were turbo.  I only hope that the next generation Hino's have the turbo option. See another thread on this subject.  I live and hope that CFS learn soemthing from previous mistakes (circa 2000 24P snail)

My opinion only. It would be wonderful if every CFS brigade had a selection of appliances at their disposal to suit every concievable emergency situation, but this is the real world.  I feel there is still strong need for 32/Pumper style appliances, particularly in urban areas.   Ultimately even the concept of Scanias for Urban CFS brigades should be worth consideration, as long as these same brigades also have a suitable 4WD appliance in the shed.  Our brigade once had the combination of a 32/Pumper and a 24, (which was later replaced by a 24P snail).  There were times when the 32 was required to attend off road jobs and from what I understand had absolutely no problems accessing most of the grass, scrub, paddock, woods etc in our area.  Even some of the heavier going areas of NP's and gorges have fire access tracks quite suitable for 2WD.  The advantage of 32/Pumpers being usually faster and more agile and can carry more equipment.

I thinks CFS is on the right track with 14, 24, 24P, 34, 34P and Pumper/Rescue adequately covering all risks.

But we can still dream that one day our brigade will have a Scania and a 34P in the shed.  I won't hold my breath though.  (We would settle for a nice type 2 instead)  :-D

It does state Turbo intercooled but with a theoretical top speed of 99 KmH.

« on: June 26, 2006, 10:48:49 PM »
My understanding is that is was primarily a "Mawson Group" equipment night.  So that would include Blewitt Springs, Happy Valley, Seaford, Morphett Vale, Kangarilla and Maclaren Flat. I am guessing that the other brigades etc involved were asked along to provide demonstrations and displays as part of the intended purpose of the evening. Morphett Vale station happens to also be the Mawson Group base. :-D

I was there also, very impressed with the quantity of equipment put together in one location for display.  Obviously a lot or organising went into this event - well done by all involved.

Fantasitic oportunity for us part time firey's to get up close and personal with all this equipment that you usually only hear about or read about.

Next time though, an afternoon session - for longer than a couple of hours - and a bit more notice.  Maybe could take on more of a open field day approach, so that members of public can come along and see what is involved in these services.

I can understand the usefulness of UHF etc in rural areas- especially to communicate with local farmers and private ff appliances.  In urban areas though I cannot see the need.  We use both VHF and UHF portables for fireground communication but not for "back to base".

As for the cab, well as it is we have GRN, GRN portable (used for MFS TG150, as we are EMA), intercom and PA microphones all within reach of the driver.  Please, no more microphones!

Incident Operations / Re: 2nd alarm house fire at Woodcroft
« on: June 19, 2006, 12:36:10 AM »
This is my point of view only. I don't have exact times but can cross check with the report later.  HVCFS arrived with 2x BA some time after MFS, but certainly not that far behind.  They joined mets for internal attack. Some time later, crews started calling for backup BA. This could be your 25-30min that you heard. HVCFS sent a further two BA crew to incident in HV14 with back up cylinders to boost HV24P's 4 centurion sets and 4 spare cylinders.  Total 6 BA crew on scene.  Morphett Vale and Clarendon were utilised for pump and water carting respectively.  Kangarilla were stopped prior to arrival.

Slow down there slugger.  No one is bagging anybody.  OK so maybe the "database" is in dire need of an upgrade - we'll just leave that in the hands of Safecom then.  Facts? the fact is only one brigade was responded, as stated.  In my limited experience I do not understand how any domestic dwelling in the metro area could be listed as only requiring a single unit response.  I'm sure the owners of affected outer metro properties would be interested to know that.  Also considering that there is no water supply within about 500m of that particular house, how the heck is one appliance (or even two for that matter) going to be any use at all without water?

Go figure.   Mets in their infinite wisdom responded one solitary CFS station to a going domestic?? and in the metro area as well. What the...

It was only when HVCFS called Mets back to default (insufficient crews, initially) that Mets reponded other brigades....or maybe they just saw the smoke and decided to send 431.  HVCFS did get going only a few minutes later to be first CFS crew on scene - just behind MFS, others weren't far behind.  All in all a good turn out and a job well done by all who attended.

As for the SES page going to HVCFS, who knows what happened there?

My memory of RFW's is from days as a cadet at Williamstown.  On visits to Woods&Forests at Mt Crawford we were shown their firefighting appliance.  A great big Muthatrucker.  Yellow I think, huge snorkel on the roof.  Held approx 3000 litres.  Replaced nowadays by the Fire Kings.

Darius, Blinky and others.  The siren ringtone that I have is one that I downloaded from the 'net.  I just can't find which site.  Couple of good ones at blueskyfrog.com.au  if you want to pay for them.  Truetones, Police Siren and Highway Cop.  The latter has a good Code3 type siren sound.

I will see if there is a way of converting it from this .xmf whatever, to a .mid/.wav or similar.

Cheers,

Other Government Agencies / Re: SES Station Numbers...
« on: April 21, 2006, 06:52:20 PM »
Just for the record.  When we established that SES were not required, we advised MFS to issue a stop, which they did.  Some time later, after our appliance had returned to station, we observed an SES unit (Noarlunga?) driving away from the scene.  I assume they had received the stop page and continued P2 to scene, found nobody there and all OK, so went home.  We were aware of SES's response to the initial call by the 5 digit code at the end of the pager message "72820".

That's exactly what happened, with all respect to our fellow vollies.  Appliance was already back in the bay when SES unit drove passed the station enroute to the job.

Thanks for that Medevac.  Quite topical as we were paged this afternoon to a tree down along with SES.  Some of the members were not aware of which code was for which SES unit.  (Some weren't aware what the code was at all) We had assumed that Sturt was responding due to the location, but by your list it was Noarlunga.
