I bet for at least three people it aint too exciting.  I hope no one was badly hurt.

And what part of being pinned to a wall by a bus would you find boring and dull?

All of it, if your the poor victim!

Frightening, Painful - Yes, but no, not exciting.  As a Firefighter I'm sure it would get my adrenalin pumping, as I am sure it would have for those who were trapped, but I still wouldn't call it exciting.

Report in the Sunday Mail says three people hospitalised after being knocked off a ledge when the bus hit them after rolling down the hill.  Fortunately all escaped with only minor injuries.  "It is beleived a handbrake problem on the bus may have been the cause of the accident"

Big response for a locked gate

What a waste of resources, call security and pay the opening fee cretin

Surely more to it than a locked gate.  If that's all it was, then why was ANY agency bothered, let alone Rescue, Pump and SES!!!  Maybe just Sapol to 'TIN' for being a dhead.

Our brigade has also attended to "Assist Police" calls for persons threatening self harm - eg. with a can of petrol and a match.

Goes without saying that potentially could mean the diference between life and death if the Firies are on scene BEFORE he lights up!

time for the so called media unit to get out there and show what cfs really do rather than just in the bushfire season.....

Now there is the icing for the cake!!

How can the public perceive the CFS as anything other than a Rural service when they only hear about us in Summer?

Other than those in areas directly served by CFS, actually have an idea about what the CFS do year round. Most city slickers assume the CFS only come out of the woodwork on the 1st of December..

If CFS image is your concern, here's an idea - paint all urban CFS appliances red (or red/white like the CFA).  Joe public then better associates the red truck with urban firefighting.  "It's a red truck, must be as good (or better  :-D) as the Met's trucks".  They are also more likley to give way in traffic to the approaching red truck than the silly white council truck that has red and blue lights on it.

I know CFS decided long ago that white was more appropriate in a smokey environment - but that doesn't apply to a Type 2 medium does it!

 :-D

• $8.6 million over four years for 22 additional firefighters for the new Paradise Fire Station;

(8,600,000/4)/22 = $97,727.27

That's not a bad wage...

Likely that the $8.6m includes admin costs - superannuation, workcover premiums, training, equipment and PPE, allowances for sick and annual leave and of course payroll tax. All are cost associated with employing persons, all have to budgeted for.

Probably works out that "employee" would be lucky to recieve 60-70% of that budget in actual wages.

Not just the truck.  Assuming total loss of all equipment/trucks in that scenario, replacment of all necessary equipment to enable business continuity.  Everything from PPE and BA, to hoses, branches and other "tools of trade", even simple things like keys to locks etc etc.

Does CFS, as a business, have a "BIRP" in place for that unfortunate event should it happen.  BIRP = Business Interuption and Recovery Plan.  Do they have a full stock of equipment stored ready to go out to a brigade.  The "Spare" truck supplied to us while ours is out for repairs is NOT fully stocked and ready to go, it has only basic stowage.  It would take some time to accumulate all the necessary gear.  Next nearest station would have to cover the area for quite some time.

OK, we all know how it works, especially with this weather, but my whinge for the day...

1. Call a plumber to fix the roof, then,
2. An Electrician to check the wiring is safe and dry,

but why "000" ?.

Sometime ago now, the circuit breaker was invented.  Even more recently, the RCD (safety switch) was invented.  These should adequately protect the installation from catching fire, in this circumstance.  But if your not sure, turn the filtered thing off just in case. Then refer to 1. and 2. above

Unless there is ACTUALLY a fire, dont call the Emergency services - don't you think they're busy anough at the moment!

Lack of proper home maintenance does not constitute an emergency.  More than likely, we will just isolate it and tell the owner to call a sparky anyway.

Enough said.  Whinge over  :-D

Country Fire Service / Re: Burnside Pumper
« on: May 12, 2008, 07:29:37 PM »
We have digressed from the Topic at hand somewhat, but...

That rule would make sense, to a point!  In this case, the Spare 34 is identified on air as HV34 - the appliance it replaced.  Clarendon, who have the appliance marked HV34 are referring to it as Clarendon 34, not CL24P.  Furthermore, Clarendon 24P is not being referred to as Happy Valley Pumper (for obvious reasons), but is known as HV24P, an otherwise non-existant appliance.  Any replacement appliance should be identified by its service capabilities, ie Pumper, 34, 24, or 24P.  No point calling a truck a 24P if it isn't, just because it replaced a 24P.  Put up your hand if your confused

We did trial calling the appliance by its marked identifier, ie CL24P, (actually, that decision was made for us) but that just caused total confusion when other agencies/groups were expecting HV, as per the pager message, and 'Clarendon' showed up at a job.  I think we even got stopped for a job because we came up on air as CL24P.  I think that's when we changed tack.

Can we have our Pumper back now, please, my head hurts!!?

Anyway, how is progress with the next generation Burnside truck??

I don't see how it can be an operational appliance without one, someone at the regional office is taking a big risk.

It has one - although it does appear to be an older model

Just my take on the deal.  To cover the urban risks, HV needed a "P" appliance, so I guess the nearest suitable was Clarendon.  In a "you scratch mine..." deal, have swapped HV34 for CL24P while HV Pumper is offline.  HV are then using region spare 34 for rural jobs (old Sellicks 34).  Wouldn't have thought Clarendon would have been too keen to hand over their twin cab 24P for an old clunker 34, just to satisfy HV's needs.

Probably figured that the 34 probably wouldn't get a lot of use this time of year...only to be followed by a spate of 4 or 5 grassies in as many days.

SA Firefighter General / Re: Blue cats eyes instead of fire posts
« on: May 07, 2008, 11:57:08 AM »
I have also noted the use of bright blue flexible roadside posts with blue reflective strips on them. Used on dirt roads, where cats eyes aren't appropriate.  Stand out very well, day and night.

My understanding is that the red/white markers, although not being deliberately removed per se, are not being replenished when they are damaged/vandalised/wear out, and that eventually the blue markers will displace the red/white ones completely.  Again, that is MY understanding.

Very interseting.

Sounds like Matt has managed to integrate the paging data with the streetfinder - or something to that affect, so that a map is automatically printed of the incident location based on pager info.  Any details MattB???

Can can you integrate it with a Navman and put it in the trucks for full turn by turn directions?

I suspect that the following may be of some interest.

"any special purpose vehicle with two or more axles and an unladen mass not exceeding 15000 kg"

Does a Fire Appliance come under the description of Special Purpose Vehicle???

Yes Rescue we are rich for space.  These Pumpers certainly can swallow quite a lot.  There's even enough room for some RCR equipment
But I don't think that will happen anytime soon.

Long story behind that one. Much debated over many forums.  Suffice to say, had experienced handling probs due to weight distribution - or something like that.  I understand the "old" 34 is to be fully rebuilt before being made available for service elsewhere.  I think it is about 5 years old.

I guess it's because the BOM don't predict that the severe weather conditions will reach that far south.  By the sounds of it, I would be thankful if I were in the LSE.
