House Fire - 2 Story, 3 Trapped Occupants, Left hand side of house fully involved (Top and Bottom Story), Entry on the right side at the top and centre back and front on bottom story.

Crew/Trucks Available - 1 x Type 2 Pumper with 4 x CABA, 2 x Rural 34's With 2 x CABA sets each & 1 x 14 No CABA.  Each truck has a crew of 5 with everyone BA trained (14 is a new mitsi canter dualcab).  Mains water is available but is approx. 200 metres to the nearest hydrant.

Prior to arrival based on the information recieved the OIC assigns the crews their tasks. On arrival OIC upgrades to 2nd alarm, and requests SAPOL and SAAS to attend..then does quick rece of the building and isolates the power, gas.Crews from Pumper gets to work with 1 x BA crews with a HP line make entry into the building and commence primary search,a second BA crew donned up,and ready to go setup PPV fan at front entry, and follow first team in with a second HP line. The OIC delegates a crew from the first 34 arriving to relay water to Pumper and start to protect exposures and also get another BA crew to act as safety for two teams inside already committed.Second 34 relays water to first 34,and has 2 BA operators donn and act as second safety crew backup.Crews from both 34's and now 14 start laying out a line of 64mm to the hydrant which is now 60 metres away.Once setup and all appliances now relaying water, crews assist BA operators with casualties they have retreived and provide first aid till SAAS arrive.BA safety teams takeover from the crews that have retrieved casualties and continue firefighting operations, ventilation and salvage.

The house was toast but a good save by the BA crews for 3 casualties :-D

« on: August 09, 2006, 04:47:22 PM »
A Captain is a manager and as such instead of doing all the work themselves,by delegation he/she shares the managerial load with the lieutenants.

Question of election is simple who makes a good manager in your brigade/group,and vote accordingly. :-)

SA Firefighter General / Re: Where do we draw the line
« on: August 09, 2006, 02:48:12 PM »
The rule about towing with CFS appliances came about because some had ripped off their bullbars etc and damaged private vehicles while doing so,as snatch straps etc were not secured in the correct location. This applies to private vehicles as CFS will not indemnify anyone who does it and causes damage to a private vehicle hence its not allowed.I have towed many a CFS vehicle out of a bog, creek crossing while on the fireground, and appliances with flat batteries due to drivers not winding the revs up at an incident when running all the revolving  lights, spotlights, pump etc.

Something we should all be concerned about is NO JUMPER LEADS on appliances as standard stowage :-o

SA Firefighter General / Re: Response SOPs
« on: August 09, 2006, 02:27:29 PM »
There is supposedly an agreement also that SAAS will respond fire service to all vehicle accidents, but that doesnt happen in all cases. You are right in saying that SAPOL and SAAS wont give a stop call, and this is because SAAS dont want to do traffic control, and rightly so, so the sooner another agency gets there thay can be available for other life threatening emergencies!!

All this will come undone when a responding appliance refuses to take a stop call and collides with a member of the public for no reason while still on Priority 1, when based on the information received they could have dropped back to Priority 2 and got there just as quick.

Fire Fighter Training / Re: radio operator training materials?
« on: August 08, 2006, 11:57:40 AM »
Every brigade should have a brigade communications officer.He/she is responsible for ensuring all members are trained to operate the equipment within their brigade which should include call taking, radio procedures and sop guidelines in relation to responses/notifications to GO,DGO etc.

A mock exercise involving a structure fire was done at training by myself using VHF portables with new recruits and cadets that had come up to being fireys. We simulated it going to a fourth alarm using all CFS prowords and Sitreps, including appliance callsigns.Everyone gets involved and builds confidence on the radio.

As the saying goes practice makes perfect the more you do it the better you get at it.

Reminds me of a saying make sure brain is engaged before putting mouth into gear, and on radio nothing could be more true.

Cheers

Country Fire Service / Re: Why has this forum started to suck???
« on: August 03, 2006, 06:08:17 PM »
I think some people have forgotten why we joined the CFS in the first place,to provide a service to the community, and fellow comrades when the call goes out!!!

It doesnt matter how many calls you do a year,or how many appliances you have,or better equipment we all wear the yellow guernsey for the same reason.

Hands up those who went to Sydney,KI,Eyre Peninsula,Burra etc?

We all went to do what?........provide support for our communities and  fellow comrades when they needed us.
This forum wasnt put here to bag other brigades or members so lets stick to the job!

A FIRE DOESNT KNOW POLITICS!!!

Country Fire Service / Re: Pagers?
« on: August 03, 2006, 05:37:33 PM »
We utilise our town siren mainly during fire season and daytime only if its a fire in our own brigade area as a warning to the public, and the odd ocassions when we need more crew that havent heard the pager.
Speaking of which for those that dont know you can no longer GET ANY PAGER holsters that we rely on so much to clip on our belts etc...direct from the GRN help desk and Link!!!!!

No wonder we have to leave them inside or put in a drawer for safekeeping while we work outside.

Dont get rid of your station siren just yet..remember Ash Wednesday!

Unless your lucky to have a secret stash of them somewhere!

Country Fire Service / Re: Appliance Response Protocols
« on: August 03, 2006, 05:04:56 PM »
This has been a long debate for years and was removed from SOP's quite a while ago stating a senior firefigter/officer must crew an appliance before it could leave. The very foundation it was eroding, volunteers ability to respond to an emergency in their community, due to brigade standing orders overiding, turnouts because there was no officer.Thankfully that has changed and the CFS policy is that a minimum of 4 persons are required for turnout in a minimum 2.2 appliance, and at least 2 BA operators when responding to an EMA job,the most senior person on the appliance is the OIC at the time, based on years service, failing that any firefighter willing to stand up to the plate and take charge of the appliance.
