I was told that everyone who has served 10 years as a CFS volunteer will get a medal for it but i've yet to see mine hopefully it turns up in December at the end of year brigade BBQ and Meeting

Plus i've got my 15 years service medal coming up in December 2010          (that includes cadet years too)

SAFECOM staff have nothing else better to do...

I think we should acknowledge that at least someone is trying to recognise the time and effort put in by CFS volunteers.  There's a lot of complaining that we're unappreciated by SAFECOM, but it looks like we don't appreciate efforts they make for us either...

yeah....i'm sure the natives were also suitably impressed and thankful for the beads and shiny stuff

Silly us for not being so gracious when we are being bought off with a token....shame on us

So if they don't give us a medal (which was something actually asked for by members), what should be given as a recognition of service?

i can only echo two things i hear constantly:

> Not in it for recognition...

> As recognition, it'd be great to make our service a "smoother ride" for the volunteers...As there is a lot of burden place on them (non-operationally).

they already get a medal....a real one that u can wear, not a trinket.....at 15 yrs, plus an add on every five years

people that are in it for medals always worry me.......

Can't see the problem with the medal.
Nothing wrong with being proud about your service.
I am not in the CFS for medals or anything like that, but one day when you are old it would be nice to look back on what you have done for the community.
Yes I would like to swap all the CFS medals for a new truck, but hey it's a nice way of say thanks in this crazy world.

Ah yes, the same medal I get for going to work every day, and doing no more than what I am paid to do.

How does the work that I do as a paid employee, equate to that of a volunteer, doing a lot more, with no pay ?

And while the bulk of us do not join a volunteer service to be publicly recognised, is it really so bad when the hierarchy tries to recognise the dedicated service its troops give it, through something like a medal?

wrote out a whole long winded reply about attitudes and platitudes.....but you know what... CBF'd....if you guys and gals out there think trinkets are good, then knock yourself out.

Me....I'd rather see someone with 10 years service given an ESL exemption for the year (and every year after they continue to be operational)....but hey...obviously I'm a minority

If we didn't pay the ESL, we wouldn't have trucks or trinkets....

awww c'mon....its no so hard to do the math

15,000 operation firefighters in the CFS (cough...yes i know, no need to say it), if you assume 20% are over 10 years service (again.....cough, cough)....then 3000 would be due an ESL exemption. if the average ESL is around the $100 mark.....then thats $300,000 in a multi million $$$ levied Fund. Or.....around the same as one 34 type appliance. Now volunteer retention will have a budget....so offset that against it....and we're talking a pittance of $$ for a real impact....imagine THAT as a media release Euan....hell you could save that amount by getting rid  of...i mean combining .... a Region (1) or two....

oh....and while I'm at it.....the fact that Cadet years appear to be  included makes a mockery of it....playing games and being babysat is hardly operational service

The international year of the volunteer medal is now to be worn on the left.

When originally issued, it was to be worn on the right.

There was some process it went through, (that I can't remember exactly what) and it meant that it was then to be work on the left.

Have a listen to some of you lot, like a pack of little teenage girls.

So you dedicate 10+ years to something which is a big call as it impacts on your work, family and social life especially if you're in a busy brigade.

So the CFS decide to show a bit of appreciation, what a nice thing to do. I'd place a bet all you on here that are having a cry will still be lining up at your stations to receive it!

Man up and get on with the job!

Hey Pip,
I would be really interested to see what process this was... Under the Australian Awards and Honours, the IYV medal is still not a listed medal under the "THE ORDER OF WEARING AUSTRALIAN HONOURS AND AWARDS" at http://www.itsanhonour.gov.au/honours/awards/wearing.cfm (http://www.itsanhonour.gov.au/honours/awards/wearing.cfm) - listed in "order of wearing"....

I think many people simply wore it on the left out of ignorance or decided that they wanted it mounted with other medals (National medal etc)..

Happy to learn and see what happened at the commonwealth to change this to a listed medal and where it is listed...

As for a CFS medal, whilst no longer a member, I personally think its a great reward and recognition tool, however should not be the only one. It should be used as a milestone tool to recognise service, however the other good stuff done by volunteers should be recognised and acknowledged in many other ways, including on the spot verbal acknowledgement by peers and ranking staff..

Just my 2c....

Cheers
Shane

Ribbon bars were issued with the IYV medal and the info on wearing the new CFS medal talks about a ribbon bar for the CFS medal so not sure why they weren't issued with the medal???

We had several members - including myself which were presented with medals on Australia Day (Euan made the trip up North to present them)

I have been a CFS members for 25 plus years and one of our long term members received a 60 year award - all I have to say is well done to those whom deserve it.

They have all been distributed from State (over 8000 of them) so best those missing them start talking to Region/Group/Captain
