SA Firefighter General / Sturt Group tanker fundraising
« on: March 27, 2014, 08:32:16 PM »
Wow... ask a simple question out of genuine interest and for the intent of creating genuine discussion and people jump down your throat and assume you must be having a dig at fellow Volunteers! Hmmm...

Quite the opposite thank you. I take my hat off to the Volunteers for going above and beyond in order to provide a better service to their Community.

I do not live in the Adelaide Hills, so I am not familiar with the quality or reliability of mains water and/or power supply in that area. All I had heard was that Sturt Group wanted a second BWC to provide coverage for the times when their existing BWC was committed to strike teams, hence my question. I assume they have already tried through the official channels of SFEC review?

At the risk of further ridicule...
1) What are they aiming for in terms of build? Tank capacity? PTO or independent pump?
2) How much is it expected to cost?
3) Where are they planning to house it?
4) Is there an agreement with CFS whereby they have endorsed the purchase of a self funded appliance i.e. have CFS agreed to pay for ongoing operational expenses such as maintenance, tyres, rego, fuel?
5) Will Sturt Group SFEC be updated to reflect the second BWC? If not, then what (apart from public/Volunteer backlash) stops CFS from not replacing Belair BWC when the time comes?

Again, just asking questions out of genuine interest, no criticism intended.

Really, I have been nothing but impressed by the FFRS boys, can't do enough for you, development has been awesome. Not very expensive at all if you take a whole year into account and what features it has, cheaper than a phone contract.

Couldn't agree more. Have dealt with both the local boys as well as Swissphone and both have been very responsive and supportive.

They have been pushing the scare tactics with the "need" for a second tanker or the world will end.

What is their justification for a second BWC?

My Brigade uses FFRS and has been for a little over 8 months now. I know very little about MyCFSCrew, only what I have seen on a youtube video, so can't really comment.

Obvious difference is cost. MyCFSCrew is free, however FFRS has an annual "subscription" fee which is dependent on how many calls your brigade does. Although it costs, we are happy with FFRS and will be sticking with it.

If you want to know more about FFRS, look here...
Overview

and here...
http://www.lanekcommunications.com.au/

I know of a few Brigades that were using VACS for a while have scrapped it and are using either FFRS or MyCFSCrew.

Why delay between Barker CFS and SES being responded? Have noticed this a couple of times for tree jobs in Mt Barker.

Any more progress on being able to programme the old 'tone 7' callout tone into the Apollo Gold pagers?

Thought I seen a message on the paging site the other day from a Brigade offering to change their members pagers to tone 7... can't remember who is was though.

Did anything ever eventuate with this?

OMG, imagine a brigade that has a uniform and takes some pride, get out !!!!!!

No one said anything negative though. I for one think it's a good idea to have the brigade uniform, it brings out the professional side of the CFS. But where I would disagree is if brigade started punishing the members that did not wear the uniform.

Yeah, nothing wrong with that. Good stuff!

And Mike makes a good point - plenty of other areas where duplication of equipment exists between CFS, SES and MFS.

Why on earth do you guys always have to compare with the MFS?

The MFS is a 24/7 guaranteed response.....isn't that the reason behind the CFS and SES duplication of RCR gear......there cannot be a guaranteed response from either service?

To clarify, I was meaning retained MFS stations.

Strath CFS has carried RCR gear for at least the past 10years and has strong numbers in RCR trained crew, so this is not a new revelation.

Strath SES sometimes has crewing difficulties during daytime hours and Strath CFS cover any shortfall, thereby ensuring a full rescue crew attends any incident within the response area (basically the Strath Group area - except Blackfellows Creek).

Unfortunately, this set-up relies on the DGO manually turning out (via AF) Strath CFS to any RCR incidents outside of their primary response area as CFS are not recognised in SACAD.

Anyway...Isn't this the same at Meningie? Meningie SES are the recognised rescue resource, but Meningie CFS carry RCR equipment on their 34P for the same reason(s)?

And Mike makes a good point - plenty of other areas where duplication of equipment exists between CFS, SES and MFS.

Question - Why 3 rescue resources to a 1st alarm RCR? Also, I thought above the tunnels was CFS area and below tunnels MFS area - is that correct?

Cad hasn't been adjusted to include 449, and no the tunnels is MFS area, and they always send 2 up and 2 down to cater for traffic etc

Makes sense - thanks.

Think the first one is for Station work to house a new appliance.

Correct. Blackfellows Creek station is undergoing modifications in order to fit a new appliance.

Country Fire Service / Stirling HAZMAT
« on: April 10, 2013, 10:40:06 PM »
I hear that Stirling CFS's HAZMAT capability is in the process of being transferred to Bridgewater Brigade. At first I assumed that Stirling must have been relinquishing this willingly (as a part of SFEC reviews). However, I now hear that Stirling have not been consulted about the transfer and are not very happy (understandably).

Any further details?

Are SES trained in HLO procedures like CFS have been?

Is watching a 15minute DVD really training?

It's a lot better than nothing... and can be made into quite an interesting training night.

Just more uneccessary over-resourcing. Either CFS do these type of calls or SES do them, not both (my opinion only).

1km south of Wallroo, yet Kadina CFS paged before Wallaroo MFS, albeit only several seconds. Would have thought second appliance for this type of call would be Kadina/Moonta MFS?

1km south is in kadina CFS response area hence first appliance next closest being wallaroos appliance!

Makes sense, thanks.

Not always the Brigade's fault either.

We have had a couple instances where we have cleared an appliance and had acknowledgement from AF, only to receive a phone call to the Station half an hour or so later asking if the appliance is back online yet.

Not having a dig at AF Operators, but just saying...

All jobs outside of metro MFS have to be sent as an RCR, every now and then an operator inadvertently sends a minor cleanup for an MVA and so they are quickly upgraded to rectify it.

Makes sense, I thought that was probably the reason.

Thanks all.

See this happen quite often... Initial response type is Minor Cleanup, then quickly changed to RCR. Why?
