Looks pretty speccy inside but no pics, sorry. It's actually quite boring from the outside - just imagine a big tall oblongish red blob with wheels and a few windows....  :-D

SA Firefighter General / Re: APPLIANCE NAMES
« on: May 04, 2007, 03:29:50 PM »
No names but at a recent incident I went to it was near impossible to figure out call signs for sectors, as they called each other by pet or first names over the radio - like 'mum', which doesn't help the rest of us. Maybe I should have followed suit and called that command car 'mum' as well....

10 wouldn't let anyone go anywhere if it was rating well. Flames might bring up the ratings a bit....

Andrew is a firefighter from Victoria.

I don't watch TV by the way, but its great to hear they are putting recycling water on the agenda - and making some faces turn red at the difficulty encountered in making grey water use a reality due to a development approval system that is antiquated and unnecessarily nervous about disease risks.

SA Firefighter General / Re: Fire Fighter Availability Boards
« on: April 23, 2007, 11:06:35 PM »
Why does Cam get longer holidays than me??

I'd say it depends for what purpose the board exists. I've only ever used them for particular days of high risk, so you write up when you will be available on each day (just am/pm usually).

Country Fire Service / Bushfire Prevention Management Review
« on: April 23, 2007, 02:42:24 PM »
For info. Has this been discussed already? I couldn't find it anywhere if it has.
http://www.bushfirereview.cfs.sa.gov.au/

Quote from the website:
"We live in the driest state in Australia. Our state is vulnerable to bushfires and the number of bushfires that our emergency services are responding to is ever increasing.

With this in mind, in late 2006, I instigated the first formal review into bushfire prevention management since the early 1980’s.

The review recognises that the management of bushfires occurs within the broader emergency management framework of prevention, preparedness, response and recovery.

You are invited to provide input into the review. The terms of reference and some accompanying questions have been developed to assist with this.

As part of the review a reference group has been established to consider community input. They will also take into account the recommendations from Project Phoenix, the CFS internal review into the Wangary Bushfire and the outcomes of the Independent inquiry into the Eyre Peninsula Bushfires.

At the end of the review it is hoped that South Australia will have a bushfire prevention management framework that reflects best practice; engages and involves those who have a stake in community safety; improves the bushfire safety of the community; and minimises damage to those things that are valued by the community.

I welcome your input.

Hon Carmel Zollo MLC"

Country Fire Service / Re: Hydrants
« on: April 23, 2007, 02:35:35 PM »
Difference being that for that area you are prepared for a complete lack of water and are already responding tankers and such for a going job. In the middle of an urban area you expect a hydrant or a plug to do its thing. Or maybe I've just answered my own question - never rely on them, call for the second appliance to get water reagrdless LOL

Main Street Birdwood, Sharn

Ah, should have guessed by the bark at the base - clearly a Birdwood Eucalyptus leucoxylon ssp leucoxylon. LOL

Did this hydrant thread get resolved? What is the appropriate way to go about requests for fixing? I hear so many stories about dodgy / misaligned / broken / unidentifiable / bituminised plugs, its a wonder we find any water at all for going house fires  :|

Incident Operations / Re: Scrub Fire - Bridgewater
« on: April 14, 2007, 01:17:17 AM »
believe it was one job but initial info (presumably from 000 caller) was Mt Barker Rd Hahndorf.  10 mins later SHQ responded Bridgewater, Mylor and Stirling (why it was Stirling instead of Aldgate is one of those mysteries).

I didn't call it in, but if I had, I would have said a similar thing - East of Mt Barker Rd at the Hahndorf freeway exit (which is actually closer to Bridgewater, not Hahndorf itself). Just makes me think that was what the caller may have said but it got lost in translation.

I pity the poor person who ever has to take a 000 call from me "Um, well, I'm somewhere on the road between Keith and Naracoorte...."  :-D

Country Fire Service / Re: State Budget cuts
« on: April 14, 2007, 01:00:49 AM »
Heard about the budget cuts just after going to Euan's talk on all the training options they were looking at introducing. Can't see how they'll do that without cash! Maybe that was the idea behind involving volunteers in the process - agreement and support from thousands of volunteers for all this new training would make favourable ripples at the cash-dispensing level...

I know quite a few people up that way and in my experience you can safely assume you are responding the whole lot from the local pub - maybe the Roxby pub was closer to the fire than Andamooka station  :-D

« on: April 09, 2007, 12:41:14 PM »
I know that in my Brigade we are fortunate to have someone who is able to deliver BFF1 who when we have a new person to the Brigade we are able to start training them from night two after the induction.

I've done BFF1 three times (long story involving CFS losing paperwork), have experience providing training to volunteers and have my Certificate IV in Workplace Assessment and Training AND have told CFS that many many times and they never ask me to help. The next time CFS whinge about a lack of trainers I might actually have to slap someone  :x We could well be training up our new vollies and get them signed off on a few modules as you do malleefire.

  serenity now.....

At worst we would of it Bang Bang which isnt a bad thing!

Say again Camo, over

Yep pumprescue, got the statistics up a bit those nights - nothing too serious. The rest of easter has been very quiet thankfully.

Well done Robert, I didn't make it to any races but I could hear some from my place at night! Or maybe that was just the local hoons...

Are you sticking up for P-platers Mack? Wouldn't happen to be one would ya
I totalled my parents car when I was on my P's, so I know what they're like from personal experience (or incidentally, lack there of). There are some areas that I'd place bets going to an MVA (if that wasn't in such poor taste) that it was a P plate driver, more often male than not. I wonder if the RAAP program is making any impact on statistics for young drivers.

1 tiny grassie started by a flying burning bunch of feathers.

What the-?

I heard a recent story about a fire being started by a flaming magpie. Had hit a powerline or something. Sounds a bit bizarre to me  :|

My pager hasn't gone off all day (shouldn't have said that should I.... )

The way I understood it is similar - sign book and have police check, then you're covered. I thought you had six months to complete BFF1? Anywho, 3 or 6, either way, you can't respond without BFF1, but I sure as hell would like newbies to be training prior to BFF1 if in theory they can ride as soon as they've passed it! More training the better, and the easier they will find the BFF1 course too.

I think some people at group level just like to throw their weight around, even when they really don't have their facts straight. Or perhaps they have a bit of an axe to grind about volly numbers on the books already....

I was joking about the CO, sorry should have put smileys  :-D  :-D  :-D

But it's still not exactly healthy. Though there are worse smells to fill the cabin with, like sweaty fire fighter, or morning breath on 3am call outs

Everytime a fire was spotted by one or more of the towers SE Forestry Base will send spotter aircraft to that location to confirm if there was anything there

Or if the fire has already been reported by a member of the public then South East Forestry Base activates an Automatic Dispatch for Mount Gambier,Mount Burr and Penola 'Nangwarry' forest bases as well as the bombers meaning an all out fire response..... if theres a stop call then SE Forestry Base cancels the Auto Dispatch allowing appliances to either return to their depots or standby locations

But only if there is a risk to plantation  :-D

Not necessarily Blue cause all the grass fires that Forestry SA respond to along with CFS the Automatic Dispatch system still applies regardless of it being near plantations or not

Well actually there aint much in the south east that isn't near a ForestrySA plantation, so my comment still holds  :-D
