Country Fire Service / Re: Should CFS be Paid For COQ?
« on: February 24, 2007, 07:13:45 AM »
It's interesting how many people think getting remunerated is a bad thing. How can it be bad?
What about the cost involved in processing this remuneration? It might well work out costing CFS more than the remuneration itself. $4.20 into your bank account for petrol/food/whatever, cost CFS $5 to administer.....

None of us like going to sit in an MFS station and baby sit their area...
As Cam said, if you can't justify the time, don't go. That's the good part about being volunteer - you have a choice. Not like you're going to get sacked fornot rocking up. If you don't lke it, go do something else with your time and let someone on an appliance that does enjoy it, and is happy to volunteer. But in my experience crews are keen fr COQ - you get to respond from the city (and do the whole slide-down-the-pole thing if you want!) and all the traffic lights change as you head to the job. Brilliant. Volantary unpaid COQ. Bring it on

Women of the Fire Industry / Re: Female Firefighters in the Media
« on: February 24, 2007, 06:55:35 AM »
On the other hand, taking the women who have joined, and lining them up in the media, often paraded around with the heirachy - along with comments which basically mean "look at us, we have women" - and thereby keeping those higher up the line happy, by "fullfilling" their Equity & Diversity requirements (or at least, it looks like it does, whether or not the service in question actually means it) - is not necessarily a helpful thing.   I am not referring to any specific service /brigade in the comment.

Particularly in areas that have very low numbers of female firefighters, taking the only female fire fighter in the area, and holding her up to the media is sometimes lining the female up to be shot (figuratively speaking).

I much prefer to see publicity about the fire service (whichever one it is) which has pictures which show the firefighters, some of which just happen to be women... or a relevant comment from a fire fighter, who just happens to be a female...

In this way, it is less of lining up the females to be shot, makes it more of a normal thing to have a female depicted - no hype, just that there happen to be male & females in the photo / publicity.

Yeah Pip, couldn't agree more.

Country Fire Service / Re: National Accredited Training
« on: February 19, 2007, 02:16:51 PM »
I've had no problems transferring national accreditations obtained outside services to CFS, CFA, ForestrySA and MFS. I think they're all happy they don't have to pay for it  That is the general idea behind national accreditations - transfer without hassle. Sad to think I've just been lucky and there have been issues for others with this.

I think it will only get better. Even in as short a time frame as the past five years there is a much better framework behind training, better understanding of national accreditation within services, with transparency of competencies involved, which makes for consistency and acceptability across all organisations. People might complain about having to do training again for things they are already qualified for, but that's what recognition of prior learning is all about.

If a service wont accept an accreditation then they should get on board and suport the review or development of training packages rather than complaining about the inadequacies of ones that exist.

It's an interesting point. I'm thinking of the Sturt St fires here in Mt Gambier where CFS worked alongside MFS crews, we were all getting stuck into ration packs, but in the morning we all got McDonald's muffins - I wonder if CFS had to foot the bill for this? Or would it have been MFS cos it was their area? Does anyone know how this arrangement works? I didn't even think of that before reading this post.

The men in uniform  :-D
So many reasons....
There is definately something awe-inspiring about being part of a group with its own language, uniform and equipment, sharing 'war stories' that only CFS people understand, being part of a team effort to protect the community and often saving lives, riding lights and sirens on the back of an appliance with the wind in your hair around your own home town (darn those closed cabins! Its just not the same!  :-P), having an instant extended family no matter where you travel in the state, and everyone there is volunteering their time - R-E-S-P-E-C-T
I also wanted to put myself waaaaay out of my comfort zone in order to learn new things. But I'd still rather shoot a cat out of a tree with a 64 on straight jet. Sorry.

I dont think the volunteers should be paid for COQ. However the CFS as a whole should recieve something.

At a strike team, all expenses are paid for by the primary group, in this scenario MFS is the primary "group" and there fore expenses should be charged to them....??

*cringe* lets just drive an even bigger wedge between the services! Surely this would make people hesitate (even more than they do now) to call on brigades for support if it means dollars?

If CFS do standby at the MFS station we get free coffee and biscuits/ Now isn't that payment enough?

SA Firefighter General / Re: Building bridges CFS/MFS/SES and others

Well, we've done BBQ's, that has been really good, but at every one I've been to there are orange coats, blue shirts and yellow jackets all standing in flocks LOL  I agree with the idea but it has to be more than just 'put on some grub' an effort should be made by both sides to meet and greet. Maybe some of those wonderfully uncomfortable corporate training 'getting-to-know-you games'  :-) with butcher's paper

And we've also had a bit of shared training amongst the services, and we're looking into qualified people from each service training others in areas they are less familiar with eg MFS train CFS in FIP's, CFS train MFS in grassfire containment, ForestrySA teach us all how to put out forests....it has been raised, so it will be interesting to see if this does pan out.

I'm thinking what you're thinking B2, a change of leadership that is sympathetic to or has previous experience with other srvies is generally easier to fire up about such opportunities.

Has anyone done any cross-service competitions? Does that create more animosity or does it help? I'd be keen to do them but have the teams mixed up so you're forced to work with others....any experence shared is appreciated. Or maybe it is something we all whinge about but noone has tried to solve

Women of the Fire Industry / Re: Female Firefighters in the Media
« on: February 19, 2007, 12:55:49 PM »
Hmmm, it seems to be a strange catch 22 - on the one hand its great to promote females in the fire service and maybe more will consider it an option, but at the same time when the gear goes on, we're just fire fighters like everyone else. I'm looking forward to the day when X% of females in any line of work isn't news, it's just ho-hum life.

That said, I have worked with some female CFS newbies that have made me cringe when they complained about breaking nails while bowling a hose     :-D

SA Firefighter General / Building bridges CFS/MFS/SES and others

One reason I wanted to start this topic was to be the 1000th topic LOL  :-D
No seriouly, I'm interested in a practical and positive discussion of ideas about how we can build bridges between emergency services across the state. Being operational in Mt Gambier has opened my eyes to lots of politics, miscommunication, arrogance and....well I'd like to hear from others about things that have worked in their area or ideas they have to get everyone rowing in the same direction.

Cheers,

Women of the Fire Industry / Female Firefighters in the Media
« on: February 18, 2007, 04:14:23 PM »
Coming back to a previous post about being labelled a 'female firefighter' in the media, I'm interested to hear what others think of the coverage of the recent full time crew at Mt Gambier. Every news report added in the fact that the station "boasts the highest percentage of female firefighters in the MFS" thanks to a media release from the Minister's Office. What has that got to do with the price of eggs? Who cares what sex the fire fighters are. Or is it just one of those media beat ups where you have to use words like 'longest', 'biggest', 'most', 'best' just to get some coverage...

No I dont think we should be paid,if you dont wont to go then dont, no one is forcing you to go..time some people woke up and stopped trying to get paid for something that has been the way of the VOLUNTEER service for a long time...If you wont to get paid go join the MFS.......
My sentiments precisely. I think we all need to think back to why we joined in the first place. If my house is on fire I don't care what colour your truck is and I don't care if you're getting paid or not - the big picture is saving life, property and the environment....isn't it? Not squabbling over who's 'patch' it is or who's getting paid.

Forum Suggestions / Re: Brigade websites
« on: January 01, 2007, 07:17:55 PM »
The idea was posted a while ago now but I can't find websites as a forum topic?

Everyone should of course check out Belair CFS's website, designed by yours truly LOL  :-P (be nice with feedback...!), unfortunately it hasn't been updated since I left the brigade.
http://users.chariot.net.au/~belaircfs/

The thing about websites and design in general is preferences are personal and if you like flashing things and music playing and gaudy yellow and blue banners scrolling across the screen then...um, well...each to their own I guess  As long as it is user friendly.

Hi all, quick intro - I've been a fire fighter for about five years now, much of that with CFS in region 1 and 5, but also was operational with ForestrySA and CFA for a season and have recently joined the retained ranks of MFS here in Mount Gambier.

Happy New Year all, look forward to catching you online.

Cheers,
Blue
