Yep yep, maybe we'll all get together and make a calendar this year  :-D  (gee, I just put back the movement ten years with that statement didn't I? )

Re the Mt Gambier station stats, I'm the only chick at the moment due to retained crew movements with jobs and holidays and such!

Hypotheticals / Re: You hear a DSU
« on: December 31, 2007, 09:43:36 AM »
And even luckier if all three actually work Pip!

As a BA instructor we teach 'communications', which in part is about how to use a radio (when you've got a set on you need to speak directly into the handpiece of the radio, rather than across it like you normally would, as the voice is projected forward from the mask) but apart from that you're right there is no radio comms per se, as someone else said at a reaccred you've been there for a while and I would hope you've done some radio stuff with your brigade by then. But then we should never assume anything should we! I'm all for training how we play and if that means crews go in with a radio where available during reaccreds then bring it on.

Its true that we're taught the first thing you do when you hear a DSU is CONTACT IOC AND NOTIFY THEM and this either means via radio or you get the hell out and let some one know, rather than attempting to cross through the building to locate the DSU. It may be that the DSU that has been activated can be safely snatched through a window, which the IOC will be able to assess, but those inside may be walking directly into trouble. Hard to say really, would need to weigh up the sitation - complexity of the building, how advanced the fire is, visibility, crew availability outside (yes, not all of us are flushed with resources, some CFS brigades not only don't have radios to go around, they don't have another back up BA crew for another ten or so minutes)...

I've heard people say that if they came across a heavy casualty that they would activate their DSU to bring in support crews... Radios are a much better option but I've rarely been in the situation where we've had enough to go around on a fire ground.

Country Fire Service / Re: New Dispatch Vs old SOC
« on: November 20, 2007, 07:18:16 PM »
Refreshing to read that some people in the Emergency Services still have their head screwed on and can see that Comcen is doing the best it can with the skills and resources available, and not taking an anti-MFS viewpoint over it all. The sad thing to see is certain people down here using the delays in paging to drive an even bigger wedge between services. There's been talk of public meetings, lets hope they can take a step back and remember what we are all here for.

That said, I think paging delays are unacceptable, question being what is and what can be done about it? Or do we wait for a coroner's report to tell us what to do...

I'm on the edge of quitting because of the unprofessional comments and actions I've seen from a service I was once very committed to. What volunteer wants to join a service with so much infighting, backstabbing and b!tching? Bugger the lot of them, go and help Meals on Wheels instead.

Following on from recent thread, and being Devil's advocate here - all arborists are required to view a permit from council prior to works, incase a tree is listed or protected under legislation, including for pruning works. I wonder if emergency services do the same thing if the tree is still standing? ..... (Different story of course if it has fallen over and is on someone's house or blocking a roadway)

1924305 10:42:59 19-09-07 THE BERRI AMBULANCE STATION HAS BEEN FULLY DECONTANIMATED FROM JOHN BARRETT SAAS

So I wonder what happened  :?

Does this mean that uniforms will now be real and not just drawings?  :-P

What the deal with the two year limit on main arena things? Isn't it worth keeping things running if the crowd wants to see them? I always looked forward to the Holden Precision Driving Team, for many years running  :-) And I'm sure the freestyle motorcross stuff has been on for more than two years?

Was there good feedback about the CFS main arena display? Personall;y I don't think you could see an awful lot. And would it be the same if we couldn't get Mr Ragless on the mic? Or is this the real reason it wasn't run this year - a lack of suitable MC's? Can I think of any more controversial questions? ....Um,... no that's it  :-D

Personally I find it a great opportunity to get infront of traffic waiting at the boom gates, by traveling on the opposite (wrong) side of the road and awaiting until the boomgate raise, then move to the correct side of the road infront of the traffic travelling in the right direction.  Would never cross a rail crossing if boom gates down, lights flashing or bells ringing.

No need to rush cos by then Blackwood will be on scene  :-D

The Humour Zone / One for the geeks
« on: September 17, 2007, 11:26:18 PM »
A hurricane came unexpectedly. The ship went down and was lost.
The man found himself swept up on the shore of an island with no
other people, no supplies, nothing. Only bananas and coconuts.
Used to 5-star hotels, this guy had no idea what to do,
so for the next four months he ate bananas,
drank coconut juice and longed for his old life and fixed his
gaze on the sea, hoping to spot a rescue ship.

One day, as he was lying on the beach, he spotted movement out
of the corner of his eye. It was a
rowboat, and in it was the most gorgeous woman he had ever seen.
She rowed up to him. In disbelief, he asked her: "Where did you come
from? How did you get here?" "I rowed from the other
side of the island," she said. "I landed here when my cruise ship sank."
"Amazing," he said. "I didn't know anyone else had survived.
How many are there? You were lucky to have a rowboat wash up
with you." "It's only me," she said, "and the rowboat didn't wash up;
nothing did."

He was confused. "Then how did you get the rowboat?" "Oh, simple,"
replied the woman. "I made the rowboat out of materials that I found
on the island. The oars were whittled from Gum tree branches.
I wove the bottom from palm branches and the sides and stern came
from a Eucalyptus tree." "B-B-But that's impossible," stuttered the man.
"You had no tools or hardware. How did you manage?" "Oh, that
was no problem," replied the woman. "On the other side of the
island there is a very unusual stratum of alluvial rock exposed.
I found that if I fired it to a certain temperature in my
kiln, it melted into forgeable ductile iron. I used that for tools,
and used the tools to make the hardware.

"But enough of that," she said. "Where do you live?" Sheepishly, he
confessed that he had been sleeping on the beach the whole time.
"Well, let's row over to my place, then," she said. After a few
minutes of rowing she docked the boat at a small wharf. As the man
looked to the shore he nearly fell out of the boat. Before him was a
stone walk leading to an exquisite bungalow painted in blue
and white. While the woman tied up the rowboat with an expertly
woven hemp rope, the man could only stare ahead, dumbstruck.
As they walked into the house, she said casually, "It's not much, but
I call it home. Sit down, please; would you like a drink?" "No, no
thank you," he said, still dazed. "I can't take any more coconut juice."
"It's not coconut juice," the woman replied. "I have a still. How
about a Pina Colada?"

Trying to hide his amazement, the man accepted, and they sat down
on her couch to talk. After they had exchanged their stories, the woman
announced,
"I'm going to slip I into something comfortable. Would you like to
take a shower and shave? There is a razor upstairs in the cabinet in
the bathroom." No longer questioning anything, the man went into
the bathroom. There in the cabinet was a razor made from a bone handle.
Two shells honed to a hollow ground edge were
fastened onto its end inside a swivel mechanism. "This woman is amazing,
" he mused. "What next?"

When he returned, she greeted him wearing nothing but vines -
strategically positioned - and   smelling faintly of gardenias.
She beckoned for him to sit down next
to her. "Tell me," she began, suggestively, slithering closer to him,
"we've been out here for a very long time.
You've been lonely.
There's something I'm sure you really feel like doing right now,
something you've been longing for all these months. You know..."
She stared into his eyes. He couldn't believe what he was hearing.
"You mean--?" he replied, "I can check my e-mail from here?"

Well you can move your horse around anywhere within SA without permission, but gatherings require a permit. But if I owned a horse I wouldn't be taking it to meet other horses anyway just incase!

Ah, thanks CFS_Firey for injecting some logic and useful information into the discussion  :-D - so the only air used to refill cylinders is in the banks on the trailer, and said banks are not topped up during the job. Is that right?

And anyone who uses the term "layflat" doesnt know their terminology for fire hose. Its a slang term which the fire services have adopted

Remember its either percolated or non percolated hose

Country Fire Service / Re: Metro CFS volunteers
« on: June 29, 2007, 04:48:11 PM »
Geez, lets give the CO some cred for a good plan. Cos after all, its his headon the block if there's a bad plan, why can't he get kudos for a good one for a change

I thought the metro thing would be where you basically do a bush fire fighting version of BFF1, and a bit of training, but essentially you're called upon for strike teams on day 4, 5, 6, or whenever it is that we start running out of volunteers as does happens.

Those that say 'but they wouldn't have much experience or training' well none of us can really say we have a huge amount of experience at big fires, thank goodness, and with any luck we never will! So the answer is that you would use the metro based people as fill-ins under guidance and direction wherever needed from people that have experienced some flames - the fifth person on the appliance for example.

Yeah?

Country Fire Service / Re: Driver Training Course
« on: June 29, 2007, 04:37:17 PM »
There is still no training to address the fact that many people get a car to MR licence upgrade then drive an 8-10 tonne truck priority 1 and that for most people that is the only truck they drive (ie. so are not doing it every day, like driving a car).

I'm going through driver training with MFS at the moment. The MFS package states that although there are road rule exemptions for emergency vehicles, MFS has further requirements and procedures, hence the extra training. Eg speed limits through intersections under priority 1, use of hazard and warning lights in various circumstances, etc. So although I can drive priority 2 with an MR license, I can't drive priority 1 until I pass all the training and assessments.

Sounds logical to me, I always assumed CFS had something similar? (I'm not a driver with CFS yet)

Country Fire Service / Re: SOCC/MFS Commcen merger?
« on: June 29, 2007, 04:21:39 PM »
And July 1 draws ever near....

Four minutes sounds like a luxury to me, takes me nine  :x

I disagree with whoever said essentially that 'we're volunteers therefore we take direction and like it or lump it'. That's crap and CFS is well aware of the need to look after their vollies. Lets hope with more information flow, there are less misinformation floods.

Speaking of which, I don't know if we had a meeting about all this down here, but I missed the invite.

My only concern of course is that system bugs may mean inefficient resource allocations that slow down response times and close windows of opportunity for saving lives.

Let us all hope for lots of mundane call outs to cats in trees so we can sort out any bugs before rapid response is truly required (no offense to the poor kitty in the tree).

Gorgeous gorgeous! Who holidays in Nuri?? (no offense, I feel the same about Mt Gambier LOL)

Aircraft Engineer at Adelaide Airport, my manager is fine with allowing me to go, and I can easily make up the time later. Still negotiating emergency services leave for strike teams with HR.

And if it's an interstate deployment by plane, you're the first one there!

SA Firefighter General / Re: Leaving School for calls
« on: June 12, 2007, 10:19:09 AM »
I believe you can actually count CFS activities as part of year 11 now (or a few other organisations)as part of a subject called "community studies".

True, you can do some of your BFF1 modules as part of your SACE. We also take students doing Conservation and Land Management modules in the same way, that counts toward their schooling. This is different to leaving school for calls though I guess.

I agree with Uniden's approach. Parents permission, school is aware, everyone happy. Then the onus is on the student to find out the information they missed out on during the call.
