Title: SAMFS Recruitment 2018
Post by: Optimistic on January 19, 2018, 02:05:53 PM
Hi Everyone,

So i know there is a thread already that has started to talk about recruitment for 2018 but I thought I might start an official 2018 one. I'll get the discussion started with a few questions and if you have any info please share it. Supporting evidence would be great as well, but not necessary as there is usually some truth in a rumour.

•Has anybody heard any news of a 2018 recruitment drive?

•When can we expect applications to open up/what time of year has recruitment usually started?

•How many people/squads did the 2017 recruitment drive produce?

•Who has been through the process and what was your experience?

And a personal question from me is:
How long between each assessment did you have to wait? (I.e. did you do your PAT1 and 2 together, separate, the day after your interview?)
I ask this because I grew up in South Australia and travelled around Aus a bit for work and now im looking to come home but i will be applying from interstate. I want to know how many times I need to travel so i can budget for it haha.

Anyway I hope this kicks of a good discussion and i wish everyone good luck with their application.

Hey Optimistic, welcome first of all!

Admittedly I do not check this website much at all, but logging on and seeing your post - I thought I would do my best to answer your questions. Most of these can be answered through their (SAMFS) website, and searching through the forum.

•Has anybody heard any news of a 2018 recruitment drive?
There is only scattered information about a recruitment campaign for this year. If you went to the SAMFS Open Day in November, they had a stall about recruitment. They only said 'opening soon'.

•When can we expect applications to open up/what time of year has recruitment usually started?
There isn't any real set formula... Recruitment depends on many factors. The past two drives have opened in the second half of the year.

•How many people/squads did the 2017 recruitment drive produce?
Firstly, there was no recruitment held in 2017, all squads that went through were from the campaign that opened in September 2016.
Each squad is 18 people, the fourth squad from the Sept '16 campaign is commencing 22/1/18 (according to the other forum board). Speculation going around that a fifth squad will be selected to proceed.

•Who has been through the process and what was your experience?
Stacks of people here have been through, each getting to different stages. As it says on the website, it's quite competitive.

And a personal question from me is:
How long between each assessment did you have to wait? (I.e. did you do your PAT1 and 2 together, separate, the day after your interview?)

This is a factor that can't really be calculated, sorry. Jump on the website and you can read the process in greater detail. The PAT1 and 2 are not run on the same day. In short the process is: online app> psych/aptitude test > pat1 > interview > pat2 >criminal history check > medical. So you may have to budget for up to 5 trips, should you make it through.  :-)

Advice is to get to know the process well, what is expected, and prepare.

Cheers.

Thanks Phoenix for taking the time to reply. Yea i had speculated a lot of what you said but i wanted to know for sure. Good to know how much i could possibly be up for in airline tickets.... Congrats Beater and to everyone else who made it through. What is the dynamic of your squad? what backgrounds and previous experience does everyone have?... i think its pretty crazy thou that the MFS will have taken 6 squads from a recruitment drive in 2016.

Yea Gfoss thats what i was thinking. Makes you wonder if its a cost thing or if the requirements/standards and procedures for recruitment are changing next time around. they might want to take as many people as possible from that drive.

Haven’t heard much on the grapevine. Some say March. Others say differently.

But retained being tested yes, as stated by FFGazz. Renmark did their PAT1 today according to the paging system.
So wheels in motion I guess. Not sure how long between retained folk being tested and the public recruitment being opened.

Keep your heads down friends. Prepare and go your hardest! :)

Hey guys,

I have heard some rumors that the SAMFS will open a recruitment drive either June or July. Has anyone heard anything similar to this?

Just seeking out some information from people that have progressed through the Personality Profile. From my understanding, this process is definitely the most efficient way to cull the amount of applicants that progress. Has anyone on here not progressed past the personality profile in one drive, but then applied again with success?

Thanks guys.
Good luck to all trying.

I had heard lots about early 2018, that turned into march, that turned into soon, but I got an email the other day saying that the 2016 drive had finally concluded, and feedback from the interviews would be in June, so all signs point to july intake.

Cheers
Title: Re: SAMFS Recruitment 2018
Post by: Gpats on July 12, 2018, 08:41:37 PM
They did say when they close but i can't remember off the top of my head I'm sorry, I think it was open for about 10 days. I did write it down but don't have my notes with me atm.
Everything they said sounded like it was the exact same process as last time re aptitude and psych test, i specifically remember them saying they can access previous results if you have sat it before so i assume its being done through the same company.
Title: Re: SAMFS Recruitment 2018
Post by: FireyV on July 12, 2018, 09:13:37 PM
Yep, same company for the personality profile.
Some key points:
- Recruitment opens Monday 16th for 10 days
- Personality profile results will be valid for 2 years. They will be doing another recruitment drive next year, however if you apply this intake you will not need to reapply. Basically if you don’t pass the personality test, you won’t progress or have another chance to reapply for 2 years.
- 300 new Firefighters over the next 5 years. 3 recruit courses each year..
- No 50/50 quota (some interstate services have introduced this)

Pretty much everything that was spoken about is on their website.
Recruitment process, fitness testing etc is the exact same as previous years.

Anyone have any tips for preparing for the personality profile?
Title: Re: SAMFS Recruitment 2018
Post by: tempcitz on July 13, 2018, 11:09:42 AM
I got though the personality profiling last intake, my advice is be honest, answer the first thing that pops into your head, and make sure you pick a side about most questions, don't choose the 50/50 option for every statement.
Title: Re: SAMFS Recruitment 2018
Post by: FireyV on July 13, 2018, 01:22:20 PM
From what I understand, the personality profile can be quite subjective..
I assume having a few ‘neutral‘ answers wouldn’t be bad?

From what I understand, the personality profile can be quite subjective..

Word of advice. Don’t overthink the personality profiling. Don’t try to predict what they are looking for. It’s not subjective, it’s just a tool to identify personality traits that are conducive to the role of a firefighter. It’s not the perfect system, but it is the most effective and efficient way of ranking thousands of applicants.

If you’ve done the profiling before, be consistent with your answers. Your responses are cross referenced with previous tests. Some of your responses will  change over time as your collect life experience,, but if you said you have never been caught drunk driving and in a previous test you said you did, that’s an obvious red flag that you’re manipulating the result.

They’ve been predicting a mass exodus of employees for 5 years but it’s always in dribs and drabs. There are only so many operational positions they can fill and they will only recruit as numbers demand.  Don’t plan your life around 300 firies retiring tomorrow.

It’s the best job in the world so I’d encourage everyone to have a crack. Just be realistic with the number of positions vs the number of applicants vs competitive field... and don’t be a filtered like beater if you don’t get in the first few squads.

Echoing Frobo - just logging in to reiterate what’s been said today.

This recruitment seems far more organised. And the screen after your application showed a green box saying it was successful - that’s your first confirmation, that it’s locked in with that email address.

As Frobo said - they’ll start sending out emails after all the applications have been collected and sorted

Just take it one step at a time. :)

Also recieved the payment request.

Does anyone know roughly how long the process takes?

Also in relation to the beep test - do you actually stop at 9.6 or do they let you continue to run to see what you maximum is? I know in some other states that is the case.
Title: Re: SAMFS Recruitment 2018
Post by: phoenix on July 24, 2018, 06:50:53 PM
@sj000 - you can try and swap; from memory previous applicants have been able to do that. If not then yeah, you’ll have to get off work

@bootcamp - it stops at 9.6.
Details on the process are on the website. Memorise what you can!
But the process takes 4-6 months.
Title: Re: SAMFS Recruitment 2018
Post by: tempcitz on July 24, 2018, 07:33:16 PM
At the seminar they said the first squad will start about January, so you're looking at 6 months if you're in the most successful group each time, but if you're not the profiling and interview have a 2 year resit lockout, and 1 year for the beeptest.
They also said there would be some flexibility with the aptitude/personality dates.

SAMFS Recruitment Invitation to Pay also received and paid!

From memory at the seminar they indicated that testing would start approx Monday 13th August and run for 4-6 weeks.
This is all dependent on how many applications they have to go through I would imagine.

But at least now the ball is rolling, its all a little exciting really!

Good luck to everyone who is applying.

@sj000 I’ve had nothing come through yet. I imagine they will send all the invitations out at roughly the same time. If this recruitment campaign is anything like the previous ones, be prepared to do some waiting, they typically haven’t been particularly quick in moving through the process and getting information out to people.

Recieved an invitation last week to attend the personality profiling and abilities assessment test. What are you guys using for preparation? I have been using the the Institute of Psychometric Coaching. Its good, but thinking a variety of different test styles might help..
Title: Re: SAMFS Recruitment 2018

I received mine about an hour ago. Same for me, exactly 2 weeks for the test date.
Bootcamp:
I have been using Fire Recruitment Australia as well as a few other online test's that I can find.
A friend of mine in the SAMFS has lent me some books that he used a few years back as well. They may be outdated, but still good practice.
I'm thinking the same, a few different test styles may help.

Good luck to everyone!

Everyone seems to be getting their invite exactly 2 weeks before the assessment. I know in previous years the tests have been run over 1-2 weeks, so assuming they are maintain 2 weeks notice prior to the assessment I wouldn't panic, so long as you received the email for payment and you paid it within the 5 days you can be sure they have your correct details and an email wont be too far off.

Not sure if this will help anyone, but I was passing this info on to another applicant so thought Id share it here just in case it does help someone out.
These are the rough dates for the Recruit process that they gave at the seminar:

These are the dates I have written down from the seminar:
- Monday 13th August Testing 4-6 weeks
- 17th September PAT 1 Testing
- Monday 8th October Interviews
- Monday 29th October PAT 2 Testing
- Monday 29th October Medical
- Friday 2nd November Employment Checks
- 21st January First Recruit Course Starts

These are all approx dates they gave. May change depending on varied factors. But that’s what they will be working towards.

Hope this may help some people with time frame etc.
as before, good luck to everyone on the recruit process.

Hi Guys; first post for me; I also have my date for the written test. I have heard on the grapevine that I should wear long sleeve shirts at every stage of the process due to me having a sleeve tattoo. Has anyone else heard anything like this?

Bad move. They will observe this and ask you for photos of tattoos. A sleeve is fine as long as it isnt offensive. Read the personal presentation part on website

Thanks canine, I’m just concerned that if it comes down to chosing me or someone without tattoos they will go with them. Although I have seen a few firies with tats.

Hey TLC92,
There is no point hiding them at the numeracy and personality abilities testing phase as I don't think they are looking that hard at each person as they will be seeing approx 200 people per day.
In my opinion it is probably best to be upfront and honest right from the get go.
If you have visible tattoos they will ask for photo's of them anyway at some stage of the process.
As Canine said, it all depends if they are seen to be offensive or not.
Good luck.

Double barrelled question here:
1) Anyone know the process to swap with someone the test dates?
2) Anyone got a date for the end of the month that would prefer to go Friday 24th?

I’ll be somewhere along the Savannah Way in a caravan, and won’t get to Darwin until a bit later in the month

Does anyone know what is considered a pass mark or whether there is a minimum score you have to get for the first lot of tests?
Title: Re: SAMFS Recruitment 2018
Post by: Optimistic on August 10, 2018, 09:48:47 AM
It would be based on percentile, so how you score compared to the rest of the candidates. If it was a pass mark then they wouldn't be thinning out the herd enough... Question for the people who have previously applied, was there a spelling test done using an audio recording?

@Optimistic No spelling test done via audio. Its been a while but a vaguely remember there may have been some spelling based questions such as x word is spelled incorrectly write out the correct spelling.

@2beus unfortunately no. You must attend the Angle Park training centre for the testing. I'm pretty sure it says that on the website and it was definitely mentioned during the information sessions. A few people have mentioned being able to  swap their assessment times so it might be worth putting out an email to them to see what your options are.

I believe it is a pass mark and the "thinning" is done by way of the personality profiling. The aptitude side is year 10 level in my opinion.

80% personality. No results given from psych testing. I think I remember signing something saying results remain property of MFS or the psych provider.

They never seem to give feedback on testing and i dont think they ever will unfortunately. Can be quite frustrating all i remember was the maths , english and basic testing wasnt too hard but its how you respond to questions in the personality stuff that really seperates the applicants.

Hi all,
How has everyone found the testing so far?
I had mine on Thursday, found it quite draining.

I also found it interesting how some people left after about 45 minutes of the psych testing... must have raced through it!

Any ideas as to when we'll find out if we're through to PAT 1?

The session itself almost felt like being babied through it this time with the such heavily explained steps through the process.

Agree FFGAZZ.

Although they must have had a lot of applicants that struggled to follow the instructions properly in the past - probably makes more work for them on the admin side when someone doesn't do everything properly.

Having experimented with drugs won't cause you to not progress. There is questions in there that are alerts so  if you say no to too many of them it flags that you may be manipulating your answers because you appear to never have made a mistake or experimented.

Was exactly the same as 2016's testing.
I was the first one to leave, and i left about 10:30, after starting at 8. The last section they give you 2.5 hours for personality but you probably won't need it

Sat the test yesterday about 80-90 males and 6 females, how many tests where held and were they Of similar size? Personality test same as SAPOL but the rest shorter and simpler. Now just the waiting game, mid Sept is meant to be when the next tests start, must be a big cull in the mean time!

They will only take more people as numbers require.

There either doing 2 things
Spacing out the pat 1s via sending emails each Friday of the week.
Until they reach there max say 150-200 then send out keep fit or unsuccessful emails.

Or they have sent them
All out and we will receive the other emails later this week, that’s just my thoughts but in saying that a friend got a pat1 email last Friday and is adamant he bombed the test so who knows.
What’s ur thoughts

I would think that if they are only taking 200 through to PAT1 then surely if they run groups of 10 in each beep test session then they would be finished PAT1 within 1 week....
As far as I'm aware everyone who has received an email is doing the beep test this Friday...and not the week after?

If you haven’t received a PAT 1 invite yet, you will not receive one until more numbers are required to fill squads. The first three squads of the last intake were made up of the first 240 been tested. All the invitations to contest each stage are sent out at the same time and are not sorted alphabetically or by date.

PAT1 testing will be knocked out in a day and a half if that. They test 32 people per timespot. 6 timeslots a day.

As long as you’ve not been told NO, your still in the mix.

Starting to believe if you screw up one personality test your screwed forever as they just compare your old ones and if there different its a red flag straight away which is so frustrating. This has been my 3rd personality test since leaving the Military as a firey and honestly thought i would have a decent chance of getting in but this profiling system designed by Hr psycologists is rubbish. Just wish there was something else im sure there alot of people in the same situation being Cfs or volunteers with plenty of experience who just cant get past it either. anyways end of rant sorry just had to get it off my chest, goodluck to everyone who gets through

It’s pretty clearly explained both at the seminars and before you sit the test not to try and overthink your responses or pick the answers you think the MFS are looking for. If you answer it honestly and your results have you sitting within the personality profile the MFS are looking for, you progress.

It is by no means the perfect test, but it is the most effective way of getting a snapshot of the personality types of 2500 applicants, to allow them to PAT 1 and interview a manageable number which doesn’t drain limited MFS resources for months on end.

Just because you spent time in the defence force, doesn’t guarantee you a fast track through the process. Hundreds of choccos apply each intake, and they are well represented in each squad. I get your frustrated but almost  every person who applies can make a claim on why they would be a good candidate based on their skill set and experiences.

Not getting through at this point, doesn’t meant your not suitable for the role, it just means that there were people who were more suitable at this stage in the recruitment process.

The MFS have been pretty clear that they want to diversify their workforce to reflect the community. However, they don’t want to compromise the standards required for entry like other emergency services have. It’s about getting more people with diverse backgrounds to apply, not giving them a free pass.

Yeah Fair enough understand that , not requesting a free pass at all just more of a look at even if the initial expression of interest you do is more in depth cause im sure they could cut applicants at that stage after answering a few background questions rather than just take everyone with $100 to put forward for testing.Anyway dont want to start anything haha might give sapol a go and try again down the track in the future. thanks for the responses guys

Is there a straight 'you have been unsuccessful letter' which does not mention keep your fitness up?

I received one saying "You have not been invited to progress at this time. We strongly recommend you maintain a high level of fitness"

This is my first time applying so if anyone can help me interpret this it would be awesome!

It sounds to me as though there's just the one letter this time around. It's not a definite no as its quite likely they will take several squads from this recruitment campaign and draw from this pool, but it looks like there are a lot of people in the same position and I certainly wouldn't expect to hear anything anytime soon.

But they may take more later for future squads. They took 6 squads out of last batch. Plenty will fail beep and interview so I'd say there will be another call for beep tests next year.
Keep in mind there is allso a massive push for diversity...

For the people who got through what is your scheduled time for Friday? Just trying to gauge how many they might be testing.

I wonder if SAMFS is only testing for the first squad. Since there is 3-4 months in between intakes, a lot could change for people in that time. It would also spread out recruitment timeframes and ease the pressure on the HR department. Maybe im just being hopeful haha.

Thoughts?

I think you may be just hopeful. They will run enough through the PAT 1 to allow for multiple squads. They will then take enough to the interview stage to allow for a squad to be filled if people are unsuccessful at the interview/PAT 2/Medical, where a number of people may be unsuccessful.

Psych test is ranked. Aptitude is pass/fail.

As for passing similar tests for other sevices, it’s pribably got to do with the volume of applicants in the NT vs SA, which is more competitive. There are plenty of people
Who have gotten a keep fit before then called up for the PAT 1. It all depends on how many are successful in making it through each stage.

Hi Lefty,

I wondered if you had any approximate idea of the number of people who would have received the stay fit letter out of the initial 2200?  I believe Mets we’re going to skim the top 100-150 for Pat1.

Per your ‘hopefull’ comment to optimistic, do the stay fitters actually have some chance of being pulled through or are they really just reserves per se until the next campaign can bolster the numbers?  As you say, they have potentially drawn enough through for the 2019 squads.

There’s always a chance. People from squads 52/53 were beep tested at a later date than those in earlier squads of the same intake.

Yes next campaign would be in roughly 2 years.

At the seminar, the way it was explained was that people applying this intake will be tested and put into a rank. Then next year, they would open for applications again. Those new applicants will be tested, and then integrated into the existing rank. They also said that those who apply in this intake wouldnt need to re-apply next year because their test scores are valid for 2 years.

So you can improve your personality?? If everyone was suitable to be a firefighter they wouldn't bother with the testing. If your profile changed too much from a previous test it will alert the MFS and you won't progress.
There must be hundreds with the keep fit letters

I’m fairly certain the aptitude side of things is a pass/fail, so would assume if you got a keep fit letter you received a pass and it’s come down to the personality profiling

Correct.
Maths / English is pass or fail.
Keep fit refers to being ‘in the mix’, so it’s deemed your psych results are desirable but not quite what they’re looking for at this stage.

So, keep (really) fit, and don’t give up :)

This is my 4th crack at this.
Time not on my side either - 42 years old! I believe the ceiling age limit is 45!

(Last time was 2015 - I did the beep test then went into the 'pool of 400,' I believe it was, but didn't get a call to the interview stage.)

 Got my letter -

'The results of the Assessments have now been analysed and we advise that you have not been invited to progress to the next stage (Physical Aptitude Test Stage 1 (PAT1 – Shuttle Run)) at this time.
Your application will remain on file for a period of 2 years should further participants be required to  be  called  forward  in  the  future.    In  the  meantime,  it  is  strongly  recommended  that  you maintain a high level of fitness.'

Gutted but will keep cracking away at it.
So it's a 'no' but sounds like a 'keep fit' that many others have referred to on here. Does it match what other 'keep fit' people received?

Anyway, going to keep at it until 1) I either get to old or 2) they let me in :-D :-D :-D

All the very best to those going through. I don't think there is a better career out there.

Cheers:-)

Anybody have an indication how many people are in which pools? Also, based on discussions in this thread, sounds like there have only been 3 versions of letters received  - 1) PAT 1 invite (top 200 people). 2) Not needed at this stage, stay fit. 3) Unsuccessful with the profile and aptitude testing, try again next time. Anyone know of any other versions?

Last recruitment, there were a couple different "stay fit" letter versions following the PAT 1 (which everyone who passed the profile testing was invited to). One said not needed at this time, you are on a list for future interviewing, stay fit. Anoter version just said stay fit.

Having said all of this, it sounds like they have changed the recruitment philosophy from previous campaigns. How I understood the recruitment seminar was that the list of suitable candidates would be exhausted before the recruitment campaign would be concluded. I take this to mean that everyone who was identified as "suitable" from the profile testing would get a chance to progress to the next stage (PAT 1 and interview) as requirements for more drill squads dictate i.e. it is only a matter of time.

This philosophy makes sense, it costs a lot of money and consumes a lot of MFS time and effort each time they go through the whole recruitment campaign process.

Wishful thinking. They could potentially get enough for 6 squads from the 150-200 they have invited to the beep. From this forum and some mates who got the stay fit letters I'm guessing there's a few hundred on the suitable list.

I may be wrong, but I believe they were getting all the PAT 1 testing done on Friday.

I must have been in the same group as PAC, as I had 1 person not show & 1 not make the 9.6 requirement.

Now patiently waiting for the invites to interview to be sent out.

I didn't ask nor did anybody else in my group.
But they are sticking to their proposed dates pretty well, so I would hazard a guess that emails will most likely be sent late this week or early next week.

How many people did you have in your time slot sj000?
We had 22 people.

We had 4 groups of 6, but I’m pretty sure the last group had 5 run because someone didn’t rock up
Not sure how many time slots there were during the day but I heard they beep tested about 120-130

I wonder if the file name of the letter we received can give any indication as to how many different pools there are?

The file name for mine is PPA Pool (2) and its the "not invited at this stage though we strongly recommend you maintain a high level of fitness" letter.

Would be interesting to see what other people received?

Interesting point, mine can with file name as straight “PPA Pool”

Hiya all, I too have been knocked out of the running from my psych test. I have read on here that the maths and English is pass/fail and that they rank you in order of merit from your personality profiling! How is it possible to rank candidates from their personalities????? Also heard on the grape vine that publicly they are saying there is no gender quota but in reality they are “gender selective”.

The MFS hasnt tried to hide the fact that they want to improve diversity. They have openly promoted it . But no standards have been lowered and no one is given help during the pat2. Fact. When close to 2000 sit the testing and only 120 progress at this stage there is sure to be disappointed applicants and conspiracy theories.

Fact 1: last recruitment campaign, a potential recruit failed the Pat 2 by way of dropping the dummy in the casualty rescue task.

Fact 2: That same recruit was given another chance to contest the Pat 2 after their Station Officer father got involved.

Fact 3: That individual passed the second attempt and is now a serving firefighter!!!

But “We don’t assist anyone during their Pat 2” Bull...t

You’ve taken a second hand information and skewed it to make you feel better about being deemed unsuitable to the role of a firefighter.

Check your facts. You are way off on this one. There was an issue with the equipment provided for the PAT2 which put the applicant at a significant disadvantage and they were offered an opportunity to re contest under the same conditions as everyone else. And they passed with flying colours. The father wasn’t involved. Stop making things up.

If you want to know why you haven’t progressed look at your attitude and posts on this forum and focus on what you need to do no progress in the future, not other people.

I echo Pac's earlier comment. Good luck to everyone at interviews this week.

Regarding the re-applying if unsuccessful. I believe, from what I can remember of the information session is that they keep your file on record for 2 years.
So you are able to re-apply. However, they may reject your application if you failed one of the steps.

This is what I took away from the information night. I may be well off the mark though so please don't hold this as fact.
If I am unsuccessful at my interview on Thursday I will still be re-applying next intake to try and put myself back in the mix.
All you can do is try and try again! Good luck!

Did they mention at these information sessions if they would be opening applications each year? Or do you think it will be like the last intake where they just keep taking people who have currently received an interview and who are in the ‘keep fit’ pool?

All we can do is speculate I guess

In the past they have interviewed in batches for each squad so it may be similar this time. Eg interview 50 and take top 24 for squad 1 then interview 50 for next squad and mix them in with the remaining from first batch based on interview scores.

Hi Mr T and Tyler2008,

My email says your have not been selected for a Pat 2, more info to come so i am guessing this is not an unsuccessful email, i am only guessing however it may be that you get put back in the "pool" to possibly be re-interviewed etc if they decide to put through more squads.

I am only guessing though, it does not give you a good idea of where you stand though does it?

Cheers

I agree with Mr T, I think they will either interview the remaining who passed the PAT1 and then add you guys into that pool to select the PAT2 for remaining squads
Or if there are enough who have already been deemed suitable from the interview and are waiting on a PAT2, they will draw the second squad from that, but again, who knows

I just left the open day, I spoke to a few guys and even managed to introduce myself to the acting Chief Officer. Not a whole lot to report out of it, they did confirm that they only pulled enough through to make one squad at the moment starting early next year so there would be plenty more people being called through. They said if you have received a keep fit letter you were essentially ranked high enough to still be in the running but not high enough to be called upon now. The person at the recruitment desk said they were looking at atleast 3 squads next year. Interestingly she wasn't quite so confident that there would be another call for applicants mid year like previously suggested.

@sj000 I specifically asked about the pool of applicant's who did the beeptest but weren't called upon for an interview and the guy i asked wasn't aware that anyone was in that situation, having said that, it wasn't the person manning the recruit desk so not sure what their position is.
Would be interested to see if FireLuke or anyone else got anything else out of it.

There will need there to be a significant number of retirements and promotions if you think there will be 3 squads of 24 next year. They will only ever plan one squad in advance as its dependent on global numbers of firefighters, funding and resources. Don’t take 300 over the next 3 years as a certainty.

Hi all

Does anyone know the rules surrounding glasses? I.e. I think the medical states that firefighters need 6/6 Vision, but what about those people who wear glasses? I’m currently going through some eye tests and would hate to miss out on a spot due to requiring glasses!

Thanks,

James
Title: Re: SAMFS Recruitment 2018
Post by: Left foot snap on December 01, 2018, 06:45:11 AM
You are required to have 6/6 vision unassisted. Therefore, glasses/contact lenses are not suitable for firefighting. Your safest bet would be to have laser vision correction.

Title: Re: SAMFS Recruitment 2018
Post by: Left foot snap on December 01, 2018, 06:38:50 PM
There were obviously a larger number of unsuccessful applicants in the interview, PAT2 and Medicals than expected. More applicants are probably required to be interviewed to fill a second squad for 2019, hence the invites for PAT 1.
Title: Re: SAMFS Recruitment 2018
Post by: CFS_fire32 on December 02, 2018, 10:46:24 AM
Not surprised that quite a few didn't pass the interview - got to expect that when you base the invitation purely on profile/psychometric testing.

Any idea how many extra were invited to PAT1?

And approximately 60 interviewed already with approximately 60 still waiting on an interview invitation, so gives them a large pool to select from with an additional say 80 passing PAT 1, interesting to see how many are interviewed for the second course
Title: Re: SAMFS Recruitment 2018

Do you think they might run two squads side by side?
Title: Re: SAMFS Recruitment 2018
Post by: canine on December 04, 2018, 01:08:51 PM
Maybe they just want a larger pool so they can be more selective. The current drill squad had a couple not make it to the end so they may want to widen the gene pool a bit. Unless there is a rush of retirements there would be no need to run two squads at once. I don't think they can anyway now doing 24 per squad
Title: Re: SAMFS Recruitment 2018
Post by: Left foot snap on December 04, 2018, 01:58:59 PM
I think you’ll find the profiling test pool may have been widened too far for the most recent squads (600-700 deep) and hence a couple of square pegs trying to fit into a round hole. If anything, the process will be reopened again next year to get more applicants to add to the pool of those who have already applied. The aim would be to get more people through to the interview stage who fit into the parameters of the psych test for suitability for the job, rather than widen the parameters and take less suitable people.

Don’t read into how many taken through to recent PAT1. They have to release people to run the test so it’s easier to run a larger group and have extra in the bank for future squads rather than not run enough to top up a squad.

Title: Re: SAMFS Recruitment 2018
Post by: Pac on December 06, 2018, 07:46:24 AM
I'd say that if the people who have had an interview and haven't received a fail letter, then they are still in the running. They would be placed in order from the interview  they had and if they are above the people to be interviewed next then they would go to the PAT2.

Squad 54 started two weeks ago. Have heard any other squads have been put on hold until the next promotions process is completed and more retirements occur. Up 10-12 firies on all shifts with another 24 from the current squad coming online in May. A liberal government won’t let the MFS hold onto any more surplus firies.

So even if they do reopen applications this year those of us receiving this email are ineligible to reapply.

Thats cool mate. I hope whoever is left in the running gets a good crack at it before the next recruitment drive. When you did your PAT1 did it stop at 9.6 or did it keep playing?

Has anyone else got interviews?

It seems strange they are running interviews with what appears to be so little participants.

It appears the “keep fit” pool has been slashed by half or by two-thirds.

Title: Re: SAMFS Recruitment 2018
Post by: Optimistic on May 16, 2019, 08:38:43 PM
This is complete speculation but my theory is the ones going for interviews are what was left from the first round of intakes.

Example. 2x squads 24 = 48. failure rate say 10% = 5. 48+5= 53 round up to 60 applicants tested.

After 48 recruits taken the left over applicants will go to interviews, plus the testing of the keep fit pool and the ones who have already passed interviews but not proceeded yet.

Purely by statistics the 'keep fit' who received a no thank you letter will have missed out because of numbers available for this year and historical failure rate of the process.

So by the time the new recruitment drive has been given results, at the end of the year, 2 more squads will have been selected from the remaining.

SPECULATION ONLY, im just try to be optimistic for my own situation   :-D

It appears the “keep fit” pool has been slashed by half or by two-thirds.

Half or two-thirds of how many though?

They said at the recruitment seminar that unlike previous intakes, if you make it to a particular stage of the process, you won't just be left hanging indefinitely and then told at the end bad luck, try again next time. Rather you will be given an opportunity to progress to the next stage. So in my opinion, being in the "keep fit" pool means you fit the required profile and therefore have made it to Stage 1 of the process. I am working on the assumption that this means you will be called (at some stage) to progress to PAT 1 and then to interview. This would make sense as it requires a significant amount of time, effort and money every time they start a new recruitment process from scratch. Why would you start all over again when you've still got people who fit the profile that haven't been interviewed yet (yes, I know they have done this in previous intakes).
Title: Re: SAMFS Recruitment 2018
Post by: canine on May 21, 2019, 11:05:35 AM
Many from the keep fit pool have received better luck next time letters so your assumption is incorrect. Unfortunately it would be too costly and time consuming to interview 4-500 or more applicants.

Apparently there is a squad in at the moment and it's frustrating for all of us who are in the keep fit pool.
I've heard that they will be running another squad prior to the end of the year and was wondering if anyone has news on whether the candidates have already completed their pat 1 or will they be using people from the keep fit pool and getting them to do their run.

Hi mate. This is my first forum so apologies for any mistakes. My email said as a consequence of my interview result, I won’t be progressing. Results remain on file for two years and am not required to submit an application in this time. I 99% read this the same as you but have heard of people being ramped in the past and have the smallest hope that I could be looked at again, or that “not required” means that I could reapply. Does yours say the same? Or does it actually say your aren’t allowed to?

My email may have been slightly different to yours, I never got up to the interview stage and was still in the keep fit pool after the personality profiling and abilities assessment. The email I got did specifically state "Your application lifecycle expires in July 2020, during which time you are ineligible to reapply".
It's not going to hurt to keep your eyes peeled on both this forum and the SAMFS website but after going through several recruitment processes in the past I really wouldn't get your hopes up. It sounds as though they still have a lot of people at different stages of the recruitment process to call upon and the MFS website indicates they will be taking in new applications later in the year which will expand the competition even further.
The good news is that from everything I've heard they will be taking on squads fairly regularly over the next couple of years, so as long as you don't mind a bit of waiting there will be other opportunities.

Yeah it’s tough being kept in the dark for so long. At least you know your Psych test responses are desirable, so should you do them again you can be consistent.

I’m through to the PAT2 next week. Would most people agree that if you pass PAT2 then you’re pretty much in? They would probably have a few extras that may be held over for a future squad I guess.

My thinking is if we were terrible in the interviews they would have told us by now. They usually have everyone ranked so I'm assuming they'll do Pat 2's on the top say 25 then if some fail do more? How knows!

No real point in holding onto us if we were not suitable based on our interview score.

If we're still a chance for a PAT2 call up at some stage, I've believe we could be waiting without any notice for a bit - maybe the first round of the next recruitment drive if we miss out on this round?

Also, for those like me that are still in the 'Stay Fit' pool, they did say to 'Hold tight'. I am hoping we will hear something in the next few months.
Good luck to everyone in that position, and good luck to everyone that will be applying in July.

The wording within my PAT1 stay fit letter was "You are advised that your PAT1 result is valid for 12 months. If you are not invited to attend an interview within that period, you will be required to undertake the PAT1 again in order to remain in the process."

As we've been interviewed, do you think we bypass the requirement to be retested if 12 months lapses and we are invited to PAT2 at some stage after that period?

I am way back in the passed the personality test and stay fit pool and received this email today

This is to advise you that your application remains active and will continue to do so for the application lifecycle period of 2 years effective from August 2018. During this time and subject to MFS requirements, you may be invited forward to contest the PAT1. It is important to note that you are not eligible to re-apply in Recruitment and Selection Campaigns that may occur within your 2-year application lifecycle period.

At least it’s positive but by the sounds of it, I’m still a long way back in line, but in the words of Jim Carey in Dumb and dumber “so you’re telling me there’s a chance!”

Same here.

Also know someone who got the rejection letter at the beginning of the year.
He was invited to redo the Ability Test but not the profiling as that is valid for 2 years.
He doesn't have to pay the $100 again so that is a win for him.

The MFS recruitment page has been updated and has a detailed timeline, which they have not done previously.

Has anyone started to drag people around at the beach.

I attended an info session this year and it was half empty. Did anyone attend the evening sessions? Were they full.

There is even a 5th session created for 29th. Is that because there was not as much interest as they expected this time around?
Title: Re: SAMFS Recruitment 2018

There is less interest because anyone who applied last time can't apply this time. What was the selling point at the info sessions? Family friendly lifestyle and all the crap. Did they mention much greater chance of getting cancer hence why 12 types of cancers cover firefighters under WorkCover? Do they mention cutting badly injured or dead people out of cars? Attending suicides? Etc.
Or is it all Rosey to attract the "diverse" workforce they want for some reason?

" Equity and Diversity

The following question is not compulsory. The MFS uses this information for statistical purposes only. "

" Do you identify yourself with any of the EEO target groups? If so, please indicate any from the list below that apply to you. "
