All Equipment discussion / Re: Standard Trucks
« on: April 23, 2011, 12:43:25 PM »
some quick notes to start.

- Hose on the passenger/safe side.
- Only Four classes of appliaces: Urban, Rural, Light Rural and BWC.

Amount of Hose:
Urban: 8 Lengths of Filler Hose, 2 Trays (60m) of 64mm Collecting Hose, 6 Lengths of 38mm.
Rural: Very much the same as a 34P and 34, and with 6 lengths of 25mm
Light Rural: Pretty much a 14 with 6 lengths of 25mm. 1 Length 64 and 2 length 38.

- A Rule: stick to a standard, very much like the old Hino's, till it fails to work in its working environment, then and only then, create a new long term standard.

Huh filler hose? No way, we have 1.

Also have 13 lengths of 64mm, 7 lengths of 38mm and 2 25mm layflats.

Just remember, there is no standard way to do a rescue. Often the rescues that take the longest are due to people trying to follow the "book" too much.

I got a bit over reading through but basically what i am reading is that rather than actually putting some of your ideas back to HQ you just write them on here... Hmmmm there is a reason that it is version 5.0 so that changes can be made.

I always go for the mix and match in fact depending on the incident it can be a bit on the handy side of things half orange half yellow. I reckon it is better look than causals and a tabbard that I have seen way to often from a service

Oooooh yeah, my god just when it couldn't get worse someone comes in and beats it.

Country Fire Service / Re: New CFS pumpers
« on: September 22, 2009, 12:31:20 PM »
I don't understand what the fuss is about pumpers in CFS.  MFS has spent the effort and money developing a good urban pumper, why doesn't CFS just tack on to their orders (in white)?  Instead either the I&L staff or volunteers like Burnside members put in so much time and effort, free usually, reinventing the wheel.

How much does/did the following cost:
- an MFS pumper?
- Burnside's pumper?
- now what was the real cost of Burnside's pumper if you include all the volunteer time (and brigade fund-raised money of course)?
- Stirling pumper? (including all the repairs and volunteer time)
- refurbishing the Dennis?
- a newly designed 12 pumper type appliance?  including staff time/wages writing the specs, inspections, volunteer consultation etc etc

I bet if you work out the real costs then buying white MFS pumpers would be cheaper, quicker, a lot less hassle for all concerned and result in a far better outcome for the community.

These are just hear say prices and i don't have these on paper but would be very close.

- MFS pump $400K (we could probably reduce this a touch with on 2 ba seats, just a
  foam pro etc)
- Burnside pumper $500K + (not sure why, maybe coz of one off)
- Stirling $500K and still climbing (new pump being fitted)
- Dennis $would have to be 400K + by now (started at about $250k i think)
- New proto type one $pricless... hehe

Just a pity we did not get a decent dennis, our problems would have been solved long ago and we would now have spare parts and mechanics that have worked on them and would be bringing in mid 90's models by now.

A lot of the 'busier areas' that have always been dispatched via MFS comcen [including Adelaide Hills aka Mt Barker SES] have there data programmed into BOMS. So taking them out of the mix automatically reccomends the next nearest appropriate unit.

Ie; tree down, maclaren st, mt barker would normally reccomend adelaide hills ses, take them out of the mix [k0] and it will then automatically reccomend the next unit, sturt.

So a better result than waiting for a unit member to call in when theyre ready then using local knowledge if that person even has any idea at all...
[/quote]

In that case why was the next nearest appropriate brigade not sent for this MVA??

SASES / Re: SES P1 responses when the SCC opens
« on: April 28, 2009, 09:58:25 AM »
BOMS is only at Adelaide Fire, that is why the CFS SOC was closed, in saying that though there were very strict guidelines saying who went to what and most fringe brigades responses came from Adelaide fire back then as well because BOMS has the data of who exactly should go to each street including MFS.

It is good that the SES SCC opens to take the load off but possibly somehow every response should still go through BOMS or CAD when it comes in.

As for a few people going P1 i am in the burbs and see it all the time for the smallest jobs... and on that i saw 2 the other day with trailers on!!!! What the, CFS has a policy that you can not go P1 with a trailer attached.

And yes i have complained, in the same complaint was why a chainsaw operator was not wearing chaps or a helmet.

SAMFS / Re: MFS COMMS STRIKES AGAIN

Its not done on a whiteboard, you are made "K0" (unavailable) in BOMS, therefor no matter how many brigades went to a job you would never be sent...

SASES / Re: SES P1 responses when the SCC opens
« on: April 27, 2009, 05:15:52 PM »
So what you are saying is the public should just ring 000 to get the best response coz our current database is only at A/Fire? Sounds much less complicated.

I will never go P1 to a tree down unless it is stated there is a life risk, why risk the firefighters driving P1 in wet weather for a bit of gardening.

Country Fire Service / Re: Budgets
« on: April 27, 2009, 02:34:03 PM »
MFS stations will always happen at the rate they happen, no amount of money sunk into volunteer services will help stop that. If it was one service you could spend say $4.5m to make a "SA emergency service" station instead of $4mil on an MFS station, $1mil on a CFS station and $1mil on an SES station. Only need one set of loos, one kitchen, etc etc... therefore in my example saving $1.5mil which is 6 x 34 appliances. It would be so easy to save money.

Also on that subject imagine how much better the membership would be.

Country Fire Service / Re: Budgets
« on: April 27, 2009, 11:58:28 AM »
Ah haha the service delivery standard working party will just go "ok lets give less service", they will go lets stop cutting trees up and tell the council to do it, lets stop going to alarms and get chubb to do it, lets stop going to MVA spills and give SAAS a broom and fire extinguisher. There is no way more money will be gained unless A: the ESL is increased which is a great way to lose an election or B: we have a massive disaster like Sept 11 in Adelaide and all of a sudden the magic extra govt money will be found under the couch. Saying that i do think that so much money is wasted and like Rainer said groups get a small fraction of the budget.

I say combine the MFS, CFS and SES and that will save millions eg.(use 1 x $800 disc cutter 20 times a year at salisbury "emergency service" station compared to useing 3 x $800 disc cutters once a year at Northern suburbs ses, 4 times a year at Salisbury CFS and 15 times a year at Salisbury MFS)

SAMFS / Re: MFS COMMS STRIKES AGAIN
« on: April 27, 2009, 11:40:46 AM »
It's not hard, the basic job of comms is only 2 things...

1: If something is on fire send some sort of fire suppression, as long as one form of fire suppression is notified then the rest can be sorted out in the following seconds after that response. ie 2nd brigade etc if the street is not in BOMS.

2: If someone needs rescueing then send some sort of rescue resource, again as long as a rescue resource is going then they have done their basic job and the rest can be sorted out in the following seconds. ie fire cover if the street is not in BOMS.

The 2nd part of this job was not followed, it should have been realised before the response that there was no "9" brigade attending and should have been fixed even if it was stirling from the word go. As for the fact that Mt Barker was taken off line thats a whole other chapter.

Country Fire Service / Re: New Mt Barker website
« on: December 26, 2008, 11:14:57 AM »
I like it, at least it's worth looking at, not like some other brigade sites that just say stuff like "Safety first, come home safe", it's the official CFS websites job to say all the required stuff, the brigade websites should be showing off thier gear to the community they are in.

All newer SAMFS appliances are 4 in and 4 out, the 4 in come off of the 140mm suction inlet which needs to be removed whilst draughting.

If the responses are all approved and pre organised etc like you say then why does only 1 appliance come up on 150 and the rest go stealth? Like a house fire months ago out there when the duty officer said don't come up on 150 to the second truck and the regional spare and the tanker and Dalkeith hazmat...
