SA Firefighter General / Re: New BOMS response format
« on: January 26, 2008, 06:04:50 AM »
How lonng a format do we have to have.......

MFS: INC# 055 RESPOND RCR PRINCES HIGHWAY,GLEN OSMOND TG182 GLO441,BRN19 *CFSRES:

SIMPLE

Go the armchair guru's !!
you have a thing for arm chairs don't you? What was said makes perfect sense!
You don't need half the crap that is at the start of the message. You don't even need to know that it came from Adelaide fire (MFS at the start) as the format of the message gives a strong indication.
SAAS don't have all of that stuff. If the system needs to generate all of that rubbish why can't it generate grid references?
Anyway thats my thoughts - you guys keep fighting among yourselves about what should or shouldn't commented on and maybe in 100 years there may be some improvement
cheers

well chook, for starters it definitely needs the date/time stamp somewhere in the message, its not unimportant rubbish... maybe it shouldnt be at the start of the message but it should be there...

you do need to know where the message comes from to be able to ack page, Adelaide fire may be the only CRD centre, however it becoming more often for regions and GCCs to page brigades.. a strong indication??? some brigades seem to take pride in copy-cat messaging.

SAAS dont have that stuff because they are talked through the entire details of the case when they come on air... not really as viable an option for the fire service.

oh and the UBD reference... well its nice for us brigades it works for... so the rest of ya

a nice simple format would include: DIN, Incident Type, Location, UBD Ref, Date/Time, resources responding, other details... oh... hang on, thats what weve got.

Until they get canned at the last minute due to lack of numbers.

Thats what reserve lists are for!  every course should run without a hitch.
Yeah right we've got people on the reserve lists, the courses get canned without them ever getting asked!

due to lack of participants or instructors ;)?

Oh my, think of the chafing and O2 use!

O2 eh? Nice high using a cylinder of straight O2 for BA...

lets all remember, ALL of the comcens can only ever respond brigades/units using the information from the public.... which is not always a reliable source ;)

RCR is not primary but they have the tools as does Sturt

as USAR equipment

Thats nice, but back to the original comment. It was my understanding that callsigns ending in 9, 19 and 029 were to designate RCR resources as listed in the RCR directory not USAR, Vertical, and other types of rescue???

yes... very nice, and was not directed at you, but as an explanation to SAFirey.

All Equipment discussion / Re: dummies

I say use real people volunteering as victims wherever you can. Get them to 'play dead' or be unconscious if they are happy to do that. This makes it so much more real for rescues, and crews are forced to think about handling, keeping their airway open, and they bend like real humans do (lol....duh).

I find that crews get used to 'pulling out dummies' at training and they tend to forget about first aid after removal, cos it was only ever a dummy.

bit hard to practice CPR on a real person though...

There is no CFA media.....

I assume you mean CFS? There is a CFS Media Department. Ever seen those fluro yellow helmets with "MEDIA LIAISON" printed on 'em?

"CFS Media" is no more, my friend. Enter "SAFECOM Media" or "Fire & Emergency Sercices Media"

Sturt Group
Belair 34P
Belair 14
Belair Tanker
Blackwood 24 Cafs
Blackwood Rescue
Eden Hills pumper
Eden Hills 24
Coromandel Valley 24
Coromandel Valley 24P
Cherry Gardens 34 COQ to Belair
Sturt Logistics
Sturt Car

Blackwood actually ran there 24 and the old sellicks 34 to the fire... rescue was in station.

Glad to see that Sturt Group left some appliances at home to cover their area.
Looks like the job went 4th alarm before it got out of Sturt Group.

Well actually Cherry 34 was COQ to belair for a while, Cherry 24 was in station and Blackwood rescue (doubles as a light pumper)was also, id say thats reasonable coverage..

It's a pity to see that yet again the media are reporting that the Aviation support (note: Support) won the day and that my god does SA need its own sky crane blah blah blah.

Agree 100% mate.

We need to have more media crews on the fire ground getting vision of us.

aah enter fire helmet cam, just need CFS/SAFECOM media to request the vision from firies to use... (yes i used it, yes got some good clips ;) )

All RCR units are 029, others are 020. E.g a unit I might know a lot about is Bri029
Strangely Noarlunga are Noa029 - not sure why
cheers

is it because of USAR?

Monitoring company's do ring the premises first which is our standard SOP and if no answer, next call is the brigade.

Not all the time they dont... i cant think of one company (which wont be named on here) that is notorious for just calling the fire service, without first trying to contact the residence.

I think you meant can think of one company mack.....and I have a fair idea of who you mean,we get calls to their jobs regularly, only to be told by the resident we rang the monitoring centre and told them it was a false alarm

ooops fat fingers...

thats exactly what i was meaning.

SAAS / Re: SAAS Retained?
« on: January 14, 2008, 07:39:54 AM »
The minimum age stipulations is because you have to have a FULL c class license, or it makes training very difficult. I didn't come off my P's until the last week we had to complete our driving log (8 hours, at least 2 at night). It makes things difficult if you can't drive the ambulance, especially if you are the least qualified to deal with teh casualty

Don't you have to be 20 to get your full licence in SA?  Countrykid said the minimum SAAS age was 19...

Interesting, wonder if its the same job or just a bad case of timing as both rescue resources have been responded to both jobs, also interesting to see the SAAS pages.

i wondered that for a moment also, but the first one is a road north of clarendon, where as the second is the main drag, south of kangarilla... very differant locations. Pretty handy having Meadows on that dual response actually... got the appropriate resources going for both (just divert a rescue resource), otherwise ya would have only had Meadows on the road to begin with.

May be with MFS going to charge we will may see at last some of these security firms install detection alarms in better locations but will also see them have some sort of service agreement with clients.I dont know how many times I have seen smoke alarms in kitchens and bathrooms rather than thermals...

A lot of the problem is we are working with filtered architects who place them on the plans to submit to council, and dont listen to us the ones that actually install them, but I wont be putting any detection device in a bathroom anytime soon

lets face it, the main problem is the monitoring companys.... now if they would actually do there job and try to contact the premises BEFORE calling the fire service (as is the proper procedure) then there wouldnt be so many "false alarms".

Something that can see through smoke and soot hmm.... Three words anyone?

Yeah, Thermal Imaging Cameras in the CFS? Another pipe dream like Blues'.

We don't have as many as the NSWFB but if you did some research you'd find CFS do have TIC.

http://www.ypct.com.au/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1865&Itemid=1

No doubt CFS wouldn't have as many as SAMFS or MFB either. Great to see that they are being used effectively. I hope the other one is on Burnside Hazmat... or somewhere a little more useful than KI.

Last i heard, all the regions have a TIC in the office... definitely 1, 2 &3.

i dont understand why the age to volunteer with SAAS if higher then what it is for CFS or even SES.
does anyone know why?

there is no age limit, however there is a requirement for an un-restricted drivers liscence.

SAAS / Re: SAAS Retained?

one problem i have noticed is that many potential vollies like to pick & choose which station to work out of... for instance, one of my brigades members has just started vollunteering, however has chosen the busier station, goolwa, rather than meadows even though it is closer....

perhaps this is contributing to the problem.

SA Firefighter General / Re: Helmet Camera
« on: January 09, 2008, 12:52:41 PM »

seriously mack - lets get it in perspective.  If I turned up to work with a camera attached to any part of my body, I'd be told to take it off.  If a SAMFS or SAPOL member turned up to work with a camera attached to any part of their body - they'd be told to take it off.

SAAS & SAPOL is a slightly differant situation in my opinion.... however i know of a couple of SAMFS empoloyees that do have these at work. And uses it for there own records of the incident.

the biggest issue surrounding this topic is not so much the issue of actually using a camera as opposed to who controls the recorded footage!  if the footage of CFS intellectual property and operations is taken whilst in the "employ" (SIC) of SACFS - does not the footage then belong to the CFS?

cant answer that one for you mate... but you only have to look at the "SACFS promotions unit" and the vol mag, to see them actively encouraging photography of incidents and training to be submitted... so i can only presume they back the concept.

but anyway we can both continue to have our own opinions on this, and lets "get it in perspective"... your looking at this from a SAAS point of view, where you are constantly in the face of casualties, up close and personal at every single incident... if you were recording this, or someone was standing there just recording you, then yes... id say there was a problem.

I think the discussion is probably dead, we can all bang on, on both sides of the fence on this one all day if we want too..

at the end of the day though, unless CFS put out information forbidding the use of cameras at incidents, im going to use it at fire incidents to get footage... for both our brigade records, and for use in training. and yes, ill use my own discretion as to when it is appropriate/innapropriate.

[my last input on the topic ;) ]

SOPs....

structure fire.. 2 appliances, 3 persons does not qualify as a crew, therefore page another brigade to attend...

i think thats what bittenyakka was getting at.

However i remember watching a video abut emergency airpacs carried by US crews so that they culd keep supplying air to trapped crew while they are rescued as you wll always have the time limmit of air. should this equipment be brught into CFS?

sounds interesting... id never heard of that.
i guess if you got desperate and it was a case of waiting on a rescue being effected, then a hot change could be doen with cylinders anyway.

ALL Rescue / Re: Rescuing the rescuers.
« on: January 09, 2008, 10:54:13 AM »

however it was mentioned at a recent trining session i atended that in BA we only realy train for dragging FF out if they run ut of air for example. Should we train for getting crews out of colapsed buildings or traped under faling stuff and using appropriate tlls eg hydrualic in those enviroments.

well i spose that then turns into a USAR in a sense doesnt it?

re; safety crews for BA, we've never had any firm procedure other than having a crew available... i suppose these new 'rescue mats' could become something that the crew may hang onto, along with tools for forcing entry. But other than that, i dont believe anyone carries any specialist tools (not in SACFS anyway...)
