I was travelling up the freeway and don't reckon that the roof beacons were working on the Bridgewater appliance. Front mounted and rear moounted lights were good, but don't reckon the roof top beacons were working...!?!?!!?!

There is no standard thought, thats the problem...
They are not endorsed within SA and I have been led to belive that companies / businesses are going around stating that they build them to the "Standard"... Bit hard to do when no such standard exists.

7 people died in bunkers in Vic...

A bunker is generally regarded as an outbuilding and may not require approval, unless it is to be buried more than 1 metre then a Development Approval must be sought from Council.

Personally, I think if you choose to defend your well prepared home in accordance with all the usual caveats (physically / mentally fit for task, etc etc) then a bunker could be your very own 'Refuge of Last Resort' if everything else goes to crap.

But they should be the absolute LAST option and only in the example I cited above, not used as a primary or secondary strategy on your Bushfire Plan...

The international year of the volunteer medal is now to be worn on the left.  

When originally issued, it was to be worn on the right.  

There was some process it went through, (that I can't remember exactly what) and it meant that it was then to be work on the left.

I would be really interested to see what process this was... Under the Australian Awards and Honours, the IYV medal is still not a listed medal under the "THE ORDER OF WEARING AUSTRALIAN HONOURS AND AWARDS" at http://www.itsanhonour.gov.au/honours/awards/wearing.cfm - listed in "order of wearing"....

I think many people simply wore it on the left out of ignorance or decided that they wanted it mounted with other medals (National medal etc)..

Happy to learn and see what happened at the commonwealth to change this to a listed medal and where it is listed...

As for a CFS medal, whilst no longer a member, I personally think its a great reward and recognition tool, however should not be the only one. It should be used as a milestone tool to recognise service, however the other good stuff done by volunteers should be recognised and acknowledged in many other ways, including on the spot verbal acknowledgement by peers and ranking staff..

If the CFS advice is for the community members to leave early on catastrophic days etc, then who will respond to callouts..??? (where will CFS volunteers be..)???

Is this an OHS / HR / Risk Management issue for CFS to address..???
Do the Brigades need to have an Action Plan and take the truck with them..???  :evil:

Just wondering your thoughts on the above or is it a matter of "do as we say and not as we do..!!" :?

Thanks for the link.

I am actually wanting to know more about and understand the internal Level of Preparedness for agencies.
e.g FDI might be 80+ and with several going fires that are not controlled, then CFS might change / escalate their internal LOP for colour x to colour y...

I am keen to know what drives this process and what spin offs occur with their changes, ie. increased security or lockdown of various key facilities or on-call staff are brought in or commence a skeleton staffing arrangement of coordination centres (either regional of State) and maybe opening of State Control Centre for Fire..????

I am keen to understand what drives the setting of a particular LOP and then what actions coincide with the setting of a particular LOP..???!!!

I was having a look on the CFS website to see if there were COSOPS or other internal documentation that defines the above for CFS. I am also keen to understand other agencies as well as CFS too.

Feel free to PM me if anyone doesn't want to post things in an open forum..!?!?

Rather than posting under the various agency headings (SES, CFS, DEH / Forestry and SAAS), I was hoping to get some collective information as to what the various colours for LOP are and how they relate to organisational capability, security of Operations Centres and resource preparedness etc etc...

I am also wondering what determines the LOP... AM guessing that present risk v's current workload v's available resources would have alot to do with this..??!!

There has been a roll-out of visual identification for HCP's at major events, A hi-viz vest is worn with the clinical qualification displayed front and back, i.e. NURSE or PARAMEDIC or DOCTOR. This has several aims, 1) display to the patrons / public and event organisers that HCP's are at the event and 2) it additionally reinforces internally to our members that we have HCP's and who they are. At Clipsal 500, signage was also used to display what type of HCP was on duty.

Great point Bordey and I accept that as objective criticism. We are starting to move towards a mentoring model for HCP's and student HCP's at events. One possible point worthy of note is that HCP's OTHER than Paramedic are answerable to Regulatory Bodies such as the Medical Board or Nurses Board. The fact that RN's, EN's and DR's are answerable to such a body should be seen (to some degree) as a measure of quality control due to the accountability factor. It's not perfect, and each profession has its rogues.  Paramedics have no such scrutiny and there are varying employers of "paramedics" within SA so accountability is less. Let me say though, there are many aptly clinically qualified HCP's, as well as have the experience and demeanour to perform in the pre-hospital environs.

Sorry Bordey but I am guessing that you are referring to our State Paramedic, not State Professional Officer. Our SPO is an experienced ED Nurse and he oversees the rostering / allocation of HCP's at event, as well as a key part of the CPG program. St Johns had Doctors, Nurses, Paramedics and ICP's at the event?..

I just had Sting and the Black Eyed Peas round to my house for Dinner too. . .

Hmmm, RescueHazmat - I have no personal reason to embellish the truth...
I can assure you that our State Professional Officer rostered a range of the abovementioned HealthCare Professionals for each day of the Show.

On the day I dropped in for 3 - 4 hours, there were several registered nurses (ED and/or ICU background) and a number of Enrolled Nurses.

Whilst I cannot provide exact figures, I can say that approx 10+ cases were treated on-site (by healthcare professionals) using National Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPG) and as such avoided both a hospital admission and SAAS  transport. These cases were referred to either their own GP or simply discharged back to the event.

In cases where referral on to a higher level of care was warranted, then where there was an accredited CPG clinician onsite, they would commence treatment using the CPG's, then assistance was then sought from SA Ambulance to transport the casualty/ies to hospital.

Its about time the Show management put on HealthCare Professionals at these events. Whether SAAS actually put a number of Paramedics there, or private companies get to tender with properly qualified personell.

St John rostered healthcare professionals on every day of the Show, this varied from experienced Nursing Staff, Paramedic and IC Paramedic staff through to Medical Officers. Many of these HCP's are also accredited under the National Clinical Practice Guidelines and from my preliminary discussions with a few of the HCP's that were on duty, there was 10+ hospital avoidances with the patient  either being discharged to home or being returned to the event.

For what it is worth, (and many of you will still have your own thoughts), any cadet at the show after 1800 would be most likely a Senior Cadet, meaning approximately 15+ yo and would have a senior first aid certificate. They are a great clinical resource and a risk assessment is undertaken before each event as to determine the role / scope for cadets at events.

Who in there right mind would contemplate exposing a 15yo to a stabbing (as it were in this case). It is f*&king disgraceful that St John would allow this to happen. :evil:
If they are going to be used as a first aider at events this big, they should be confined to a treatment tent etc. under the strict supervision of a experienced, fully qualified adult (and by qualified i mean training above first aid and by adult i mean someone 25+).



I have to ask, where has it been established as a fact that a cadet was present at the stabbing..???

Our cadets undergo training, both clinical as well as personal skills and attributes as part of youth development. It is a combination of the above as well as the support of adult members that sees them intergrate and utilise their skills as the situations arise. As I said before, events are assessed as to their suitability for cadet involvement, however we cannot forsee every circumstance so it is always possible that "the unexpected may happen"....

Thanks to CnD for pointing out something that I was thinking... Other agencies are not that different with its cadets.

St John 'identifies' its cadets by epaulette markings, do other services provide any on uniform markings to signify a cadet..???

I cannot comment as I did not hear the radio broadcast and wasn't on site to know about the delivery of care to the patient mentioned, however I will comment about the resource management and say that I think that public and event organiser perception of resources required to manage an event is a very subjective one, (I am NOT talking specifically about the Royal Show but event management in general).

Any private medical provider would be unlikely to supply more than 20 people to service an event the size of the Royal Adelaide Show. I suspect that St John is keen not to grossly oversupply with resources however recognise that being a larger and longer event than most events encountered, that welcoming extra members to attend is a positive and proactive move to increasing workload exposure and retaining members.

Data has been collated that shows that 80 - 90% of casualty presentations / treatments are usually made to fixed / static post rather than encountered by a mobile resource. Also, the quantity of resources will rarely impact upon response times, IF the quality of the intelligence about a job coming into the responding agency is not good or accurate. CFS / SES and SAAS can all relate to this.

There will be those who will mock and knock St John irrespective of what is posted. This may be due to their past negative dealings with the organisation or their own agendas to run. Again this is not dissimilar to that of other agencies such as CFS / SES and SAAS.

The beauty of a "rumour file" similarly to have a pseudonym on this site, is that you can pretty much say anything you like and not be held accountable or responsible for the statements made, meaning that one can talk completely out of their backside if they chose with no recourse.

Put their name to it and provide some facts, then maybe there would lie some opportunity for follow up and change....!!!
