SA Firefighter General / Re: 2008 Youth Summit

It was a fantastic weekend. Lots of enthusiam and empowerment which will hopefully be listened to. The support of Euan (or Ewin as it was spelt in room 2) and the CFSVA will hopefully mean things will get off the ground.

This is something that I will certainly be pushing to look at within my service, and possibly in future years a sector wide approach.

Some central units are also set up for direct paging to everyone. Eastern and Campbelltown at least.

Quite simply the terrain was not suitable for the horses. Overgrown, narrow, steep.

As training coordinator for my unit hopefully I can shed some more light on the situation. I've never heard of an upper limit on unit numbers of any particular skill. At the same time though, when a course is oversubscribed I think unit existing capability is taken into consideration.

There are some conditions to some roles that mean that not all units can nominate thier members for them, RCR is limited to units with RCR responsibilities (although I have heard some non-RCR units have been able to get members on courses with low numbers though this is meant to be stopped at region level), air observers need to be within 30 minutes of Mt Gambier, Port Lincoln or Adelaide airports. Air observer courses are reserved for members with a proven commitment to SES at my unit, partly due to the costs placed on the unit for the medical clearance etc. My training budget is blown each year with just First Aid courses let alone any other expenses.

At the same time state funding for courses is based on the percieved need for training in these areas. If a region is low on vertical access (for example) personel they are more likely to get a State funded Vertical Access course in thier region. So if it is percieved that there are enough trained people in an area there will not be state funding for that course, thereby effectivly capping the numbers.

SASES / Re: Kangaroo Fires Deployment
« on: December 17, 2007, 03:22:14 PM »
I spent Monday to Friday at Pandana Base camp last week as part of Deployment 1 of TF1.

Lots of long exhausting days, got a roster of shifts in by the wednesday so only a couple of 16 hour shifts at the start (only 12(+3 or so) hour shifts after that)

So many things to do different next time... but that is always the way.

We did such things as, close a school a week early and turn it into sleeping quarters, load and unload logistics trucks, creat a new road for trucks, set up a traffic managment system in the base camp, refurbishing trucks to return them to the fire ground, assist staging manager, errect tents gallore, support SAPOL on roadblocks, transport people left right and centre, take fuel water etc etc to the fireground, a zillion small tasks like moving bins, writing signs, depoying towels,  and lots more I can't think of right now.

Was pretty terrible when I first arrived, but the crews going with TF3 shouldn't have much to complain about. Showers, toilets etc are all now in place.

The locals were absolutely fantastic, supplied with vehicles, cakes, pretty much anything we needed. The head of the school was one of the most helpful people I've ever met.

The salvos too were fantastic. GREAT GREAT food, with very primitive conditions.

SA Firefighter General / Re: Interesting Fire and Emergency Related Paging

With regards to the KI RCR,

SES have a dedicated vehicle and crew on the island based at Pandana Basecamp for the duration of the fires so they can relieve local crews. They will not be responded by pager, instead directly by phone or radio (or even tapping them on the shoulder) by SES Command. Although Kingscote SES is still active and Penneshaw would be their area normally (??) I'm sure the SES rescue truck also went.

Also interesting that the call went out to Clare SES but the stop call to Clare CFS. Hope SES got the message in the end.

« on: October 09, 2007, 01:34:52 AM »
Well they're giving us plenty of notice if the October 15 date is accurate!

Does anyone know what the rational behind this move is? Seeing as all resource tracking is done at a unit level... and the the stockage of the same category of vehicles differs both within and between units what is the benefit of a standardised call sign for a vehicle?

Country Fire Service / Re: CFS Royal Show stand
« on: September 29, 2007, 02:52:10 AM »
I spent 2 full days at the show (on duty) and managed at one point to actually enter the CFS tent.

I think that the opinions of the stand being boring are partially because you're CFS members and so all the info was old-hat to you. Being SES I still saw a bit of new info and thought it was reasonably interesting... someone with no knowledge of the CFS or Bushfires would probably have found it even better.

Even wearing orange (and the ribbing that went along with that each time we escorted a vehicle past the tent) I found the people at the display really nice and informative (especially the SAFECOM lady there one day)

Having the red and blues flashing on the 34... and having the lockers open to show some more gear (I opened them to have a look anyway) might have been good... but I still think it was a good effort.

Perhaps for the future a SAFECOM display could be good... provided the Met's funding doesn't overshaddow the rest.

How about the nearest & most appropriate resource being sent..?

It seem ridiculous for an SES unit to be sent, when a CFS brigade, with the same gear is only  a few hundred metres away...and there are other services waiting for whoever to arrive...why should they waste their time waiting for a resource to come from further away, when there is one only a few minutes away?

Pip

CFS brigade with the same gear?

From my experience both Burnside Pumper and Glen Osmond carry a single "036"  (medium) sized chainsaw and possibly a bow saw.

Eastern Suburbs 172 (primary truck) carries a 036 but also a 009 (small) and 076 (large) saw as well as a pole saw.

Even if 172 was otherwise occupied (which it wasn't)... 173 carries a 009 036 and pole saw when responding to tree jobs.

Sure send a fire truck if necessary... but why not send just one fire truck for fire protection (although ETSA are on site so power is likely to be isolated) and the most appropriate resource (SES) for the tree. Eastern have done many many tree on powerline taskings without fire support and do know how to deal with live wires.

The closest resource was defiantly Burnside CFS... the closest appropriate resource is Eastern Suburbs SES.

SES get called to "tree down" as they are the control agency for Storm... and tree down is considered a storm event. Under the MFS/SES Memorandum of understanding fire should only dispatch a MFS appliance for a tree event if it is considered P1(immediate life threat) which is defined as a few criteria (Major road, secondary road completely blocked, person trapped and a few others(I can get this if anyone is dying to know)). This certainly isn't followed.

Some brigades have no issue with SES responding to tree jobs. One even ensures that SES are called even if they weren't on the primary page. Other brigades think they can do it all can call in SES once the job gets too tough for them. (In the same way some SES units think they can do it all and never ask for help)

And as for SES not having anything to offer... why are we called by CFS/MFS to assist them at jobs <eg yesterday afternoon's house fire>? I thought they could do it all?

Even if MFS were trained up to do everything we do... the same argument that keeps CFS in business keeps SES running... the MFS could do all the tasks that CFS does... just not with their current budget. In the event of a major disaster there needs to be surge capacity in any system... something that cannot be afforded with the MFS system. See the Sydney/Newcastle storms just gone... SES, MFB, RFS, Police rescue, Ambulance Rescue, etc etc were all used... but additional resources were still needed from interstate.

Initial SA request was 60 persons: Chainsaw and storm damage crews. Leaving Monday PM and returning Thursday PM. I've also heard rumours (from the paging site so not very reliable) that there may be a second deployment later in the week.

Requests seem to have gone out accross the state (Loxton, South Coast etc) Got to balance having crews here to respond.

ABC news also said QLD were sending SES crews.

I work within the Department of Health (well their payroll anyway), as well as being a Uni student.

Depending where I look and who I ask I'm entitled to either 10(Standard SA govt), 15 or unlimited days to attend SES calls (or standby) and if I can do any part of a shift I need to apply for the leave but it doesn't come out of any quota. I only get my base rate covered and so lose any shift loadings (and 150% loading is quite a lot to lose)

Also entitled to 10 days a year of training courses (eg the USAR cat II)(Standard SA Govt rule)(But if I was doing USAR cat II I'd prefer to take the Senior Firefighter Pay I think)

I have never got anywhere near a quota (only left shift 4 times) and I can only leave if I'm not doing "Urgent or Essential" work... which late at night on a weekend I am.

Work gets a very formal "XXX was required from YYYY to ZZZZ for an emergency call-out on the xth of MONTH YEAR". There's a template on the UM's computer which gets filled out each time.

The boss generally would prefer I didn't go to call outs, mainly because other people don't think it's fair I get to leave, but one of the supervisors had a son with one of the units and people are gradually getting to know what I actually do so don't mind anymore.

Uni has no real policy, but you don't have to go to lectures anyway. If I were to have a practical or an assignment I would take a note and I'm sure they would be accommodating.

But which levels need these specialist vehicles? I've finished the game and I never came across them.

It can be found at http://www.gamewinners.com/trainer.php?file=firede3-uc.zip
I was going to attatch the file but it is not an "approved" file type.

I needed it to get past the Eurotunnel level which wouldn't even load.

Has anyone been able to find the Helecopter or "water tower" vehicles advertised on the back of the box??? I've completed every level except the aforementioned Eurotunnel level and have yet to find them.

Did anyone else have trouble loading the Eurotunnel level?

Mine has consistanly crashed everytime I have tried to load it.

My computer is below the requirements to run... but every other level runs fine.
