The only way to black out a fire is to get off the truck.

The 24 specials were the answer to a hill/forrest appliance. In reality the 34's have moved more towards that theory anyway.

The pack hike test is a good starting point. Adopt the same levels as DEH for strike teams.. Include it as part of the basic skill drills.

Our brigade is looking into purchasing a few of these Powerflares.
I have used the Eflares previously, and am wondering if anyone has any experience with the Powerflares.

How do they perform compared to eflares etc?

Links to both Powerflare and Eflare are below.

SA Firefighter General / Re: showing pager messages on the web
« on: September 08, 2008, 08:20:54 AM »
i have found the pager site handy because then you know where roads are blocked, etc. from MVA's
Also certain messages advised me of behind the scenes information into something important that was going to happen and it effected me, so it wasnt a complete shock when the person concerned took further action, I was 1 step ahead of them ...
Unfortunately though in this case it WAS a invasion of privacy, mine!

Given you have mentioned previously that this is part of an ongoing investigation, i would suggest it prudent that you stop advertising it on this forum.

Agreed.

Restricting information is a tough option though.
     Who gets authorised etc?
     What criteria is assigned?

The system Mr Numbers uses could circumvent a lot of the opinion based issues we see with the scanning sites, but the quality of information we transmit would need an overhaul (think of the public image based on some of the things you hear on the scanner at the moment).

That leads the topic back to restricting access again?....?
As hard as anyone tries, the mushrooms will always be there to misinterpret and blow things out of proportion.

Country Fire Service / Re: CAD MEETINGS
« on: August 25, 2008, 11:22:09 AM »
Our group had another meeting about this a couple of months ago now.... A meeting relating to response areas. Similar to one we were invited to quite some time ago for a neighbouring group.....

The only thing we really got out of it was that there had been no real progression. The maps hadn't even been updated from the previous meeting (some 1 year(ish) before).

Fire Fighter Training / Re: BA Course
« on: August 14, 2008, 08:05:43 AM »
Either way, I think the Pre-course assignments were a good thing.
We now have another operator. Murphys law - they have missed every call requiring BA since completing the course!   :-)

Since there is no pre-course questions anymore, would people consider it a good thing if participants had to be signed off for procedures (same theory as HAZMAT)?

SASES / Entry Medical
« on: August 07, 2008, 08:17:50 AM »
It would appear that SES are going to adopt an entry level medical for members.
Not sure on all the details as yet.

Ill post some more details as they come to light.....

You need to be careful not to let these things consume you.

Probably wont have been the first time a Region has put pressure on a group to run someone through training and pass them... sure it wont be the last.

The brigade will have its own subtle mechanisms to sort this out, and there is (as already mentioned) the VSO to discuss your frustrations with.

In the meantime, dont put yourself in any danger. As a crew do your best to maintain community safety. Part of our job is finding ways around tough situations to achieve a good result.

SAAS / Re: Harsher Sentences for those who assault SAAS?

Should something like that be happening...
It would need to be reported to the appropriate department in SAAS, so that it can be investigated and handled correctly through their internal processes.

Fire Fighter Training / Re: BA Course

The pre-course assignment and medical were previously due before you arrived at the course.

It covered the principles and safety aspect of wearing CABA and also your retained knowledge of how the body produces and expels carbon dioxide, breathing rates, working on demand etc.

Thats what i remembered.....
They got everything else. The assignments are a good way of forcing people to read at least part of the book before the course.
Ah well... not to worry then.

Cheers :)

Fire Fighter Training / BA Course
« on: July 17, 2008, 08:14:35 AM »
When did they stop giving pre-course assignments to people doing their initial BA course? Or has something been left out of the envelope?

Just seemed a bit odd.....

Cheers
