All Equipment discussion / Weather Station
« on: May 07, 2013, 10:09:13 AM »
Our Station has a Davis Weather Monitor 2. We are running Weatherlink software but that now won't work on the new SAFECOM E-Connect computers.  There are 100's of these weather stations and software out there - What have other Brigades upgraded to or what software are you using to run the weather station?

Any help appreciated.

SA Firefighter General / Help wanted! Thermal Imaging Camera
« on: July 02, 2012, 09:38:27 AM »
Hello all.
Recently our Brigade was awarded a grant to purchase a Thermal Imaging Camera. We have been selected as a People's Choice Award finalist where we have the opportunity to double the funding.
I am after any photos or video footage where a Thermal Imaging Camera is in use at training or an incident - or any photos or video footage that relates to a Thermal Imaging Camera that we can use to promote our project.

I know there may not be too much out there, but anything would help and be appreciated.

Feel free to PM me for my contact details if you have anything.
Thanks!

Any Brigades or Units out there have catering trailer, like a 6x4 or 5x7 they use for local/group incidents?
My Brigade is thinking of setting one up and any ideas are good ideas.

I noticed Happy Valley 34P and HV Pumper has the "10 is too old" advertising sticker on both side roller shutters.  Not a bad idea.  Brigade initiative?

CFS 'Heroes of the bush' photo takes out national competition

Thursday, 13 May 2010

A photograph capturing the spirit of emergency service volunteering, taken by young South Australian Tim Eckert has been awarded the Secondary School Category National Winner of the 2010 National Emergency Management Volunteers Photographic Competition Awards, following a special ceremony at the High Court of Australia in Canberra on Monday.

The photograph, titled 'The heroes of the bush', encapsulates Country Fire Service (CFS) volunteer firefighters recovering after having fought a 3,000 acre bushfire near Meningie that started following hundreds of lightning strikes and involved over 100 CFS volunteers. It was taken by Tim at 11:30pm on News Years Eve 2009.

Tim and his family live near Meningie, close to Lake Alexandrina in the State's upper south east. It is an area facing bushfire risk and the photograph captures the essence of community and team work during emergencies.

South Australian Fire and Emergency Services Commission Chief Executive, David Place, says he took great pride in presenting fellow South Australian Tim with his national award at the ceremony, which also marked the beginning of National Volunteer Week.

"It was fitting that this special event, recognising emergency service volunteering, marked the commencement of National Volunteer Week. Our emergency service volunteers are a vital resource and competitions such as this allow the community to capture, share and recognise the good work they do.

"Tim truly is a deserving winner; his photograph captured the capacity and commitment of the CFS volunteers involved with the incident.

"It also depicted how very grateful Tim and his community were for the work performed by our CFS volunteers that night. Entering the photograph in the national competition was Tim's way to say thank you," said Mr Place.

Tim, who attends Meningie Area School, said he was excited and honoured to have won the national category for secondary school students.

"Actually I was travelling to Clare in the Mid North that night with my parents when we got a call about the fire on our family property back at Meningie," said the 16-year-old Year 11 student.

"Dad and I returned home, only to find the fire had been contained by the local CFS. As I had my camera with me I pulled it out and took the picture of the firefighters and their trucks just after the event.

"It wasn't until some time later my photography teacher at school saw the photo from that night and mentioned I should enter it in the competition.

"Having nothing to lose I did so and was pretty surprised to be told I was in the final field, let alone find out in due course I had won the national competition.

"We appreciated the CFS doing such a good job, so hopefully the fact the photo featured them provides further recognition."

Fellow South Australian Yvonne Hill, a long standing member of the South Australian Sea Rescue Squadron, was also awarded a National Highly Commended Award within the Individual Category for her photograph capturing the Squadron performing a rescue exercise off West Beach in Adelaide.

The Squadron is a member of Volunteer Marine Rescue (VMR) in South Australia, a valued member of the emergency services sector.

In its third year, the National Emergency Management Volunteers Photographic Competition Awards are an initiative of the Attorney-General's Department, supported by state and territory governments, with prizes sponsored by Harvey Norman.

The awards are presented to photographers who aptly capture an image depicting the capability and commitment of emergency service volunteers in Australia and fitting with the Competition theme 'Emergency Management Volunteers - Thank you'.

Further details about the 2010 National Emergency Management Volunteers Photographic Competition Awards can be found on the Emergency Management Australia website at www.ema.gov.au.

Cheers.

The Humour Zone / 9 Months
« on: September 14, 2007, 09:58:49 AM »
9 Months Later...

Jack decided to go skiing with his buddy, Bob. So they loaded up Jack's minivan and headed north. After driving for a few hours, they got caught in a terrible blizzard. So they pulled into a nearby farm and asked the attractive lady who answered the door if they could spend the night.

"I realize it's terrible weather out there and I have this huge house all to myself, but I'm recently widowed," she explained. "I'm afraid the neighbors will talk if I let you stay in my house."

"Don't worry," Jack said. "We'll be happy to sleep in the barn. And if the weather breaks, we'll be gone at first light." The lady agreed, and the two men found their way to the barn and settled in for the
night. Come morning, the weather had cleared, and they got on their way They enjoyed a great weekend of skiing.

But about nine months later, Jack got an unexpected letter from an attorney. It took him a few minutes to figure it out, but he finally determined that it was from the attorney of that attractive widow he had met on the ski weekend.

He dropped in on his friend Bob and asked, "Bob, do you remember that good-looking widow from the farm we stayed at on our ski holiday up north about 9 months ago?"

"Yes, I do." Said Bob.

"Did you, er, happen to getup in the middle of the night, go up to the house and pay her a visit?"

"Well, um, yes!," Bob said, a little embarrassed about being found out, "I have to admit that I did."
"And did you happen to give her my name instead of telling her your name?"

Bob's face turned beet red and he said,
"Yeah, look, I'm sorry, buddy. I'm afraid I did." "Why do you ask?"

"She just died and left me everything."

This is going to sound a bit strange, but i wonder if anyone here knows the tune that goes something like

Dah, dah, dah-dahhhhhhhh, boom, boom, boom, boom (think big drums)

They play it at the opening ceromony for the Olympics and stuff for a build up.

Thanks.

« on: March 02, 2007, 01:24:02 PM »
Do any Brigades have/use earpieces on thier GRN portables. This earpiece plugs directly into the 3.5mm audio jack on the remote speaker microphones. When plugged in, the audio is muted from the speaker and the audio is heard through the earpiece.
Any thought......

If you'r ever in the Barossa check out the Lord Lyndoch restaurant in Lyndoch. Great food and wine and great service from a CFS member. My pager went off whilst having tea. It turns out the owner and and two other guys from Lyndoch having tea jumped out of their skins
