SA Firefighter General / Driver Training Video-Getting there safely
« on: August 21, 2006, 05:25:33 PM »
In a recent post re Freeway I mentioned a video which was available by CFA called "Getting there safely" which follows the crew from Geelong CFA around and is a good driver training video for brigades.
I have made contact with CFA HQ and they are sending me a copy of it.
They dont have an issue with copying for other brigades who would like it.
Might actually make some drivers aware of their obligations of COSO 8 and ARR rules :-D

Some time ago our previous CEO said we had 17,000 volunteers and 450 brigades during the Sydney fires after a comment from the media about leaving our state under protected. He said If they asked us for another 1,000 they would have them.

Truth be known we have about 10,000 volunteers now.....as a lot of which we lost because of all the crap and politics in this service.
Remember when there was a survey paper about why you left the service etc from HQ getting around im sure most of it was due to inuendo against individuals.

Volunteers are a valuable resource and some towns cant afford to be sexist.

The life they save may be your own people :-D

« on: August 17, 2006, 10:34:28 AM »
GRN outages seem pretty regular and Mintabie is constantly coming up low batt etc....How many brigades still have their town sirens?

Recently 10 brigades have lost their sirens due to public complaints so a reliable source tells me.

PUBLIC eh :? they are the first to say you didnt respond quick enough...er sorry coroner we didnt have a station siren and the pagers were'nt working due to a GRN outage at the time,so we could'nt get anyone to respond to the job!!...DOH

Latest policy on PBI Gold for cleaning.....must be bagged up with your name on it and station and sent to your Regional Office at brigades expense and then sent on to Lion for cleaning...however they did say you can clean them in a front loading washing machine.Regional offices will supposedly have loan gear(10 sets)of NOMEX GEAR to swap until you get yours back.(Lead time about 3 weeks)Gee wouldnt want a sudden influx of them coming in would you..brigades might get caught short if they get a structure job

Manual turnout was initiated as obviously crews were listening in to the job on GRN and had a heads up before they got the response page...no harm in that everyone does it during fire season

LOL

Sure thing with 450 brigades and 17,000 volunteers every group could have there own pin ups,and brigades could do their own for fundraising, and as we are a equal opportunity employer its open to all....women in CFS :-D :-D

True when I started in EFS we had red trucks as well as white Belair had a red one and Bridgewater and a few others,I think the word Donald McArthur had something to do with the change to what is now.

Pity when you get a new appliance they dont have turbos as standard...ala 24P slugs

very stupid...

we have several females in the brigade, and although theyre not as physically capable as most of the males in the brigade, they are still great FFs, and if not for them we wouldnt get out the doors for day calls sometimes...

i dont see why we'd treat them any differant to  the guys in the brigade.

Create a coup and you could be Captain :-D

By wearing PBI to an RCR you are contravening CFS Policy to wear it to anything other than a structure fire or BA incident, and also it does not meet standard for visibility. If it did we wouldnt have to wear the vests would we :-D

Hypotheticals / Re: hypothetical incident 2
« on: August 11, 2006, 07:33:11 PM »
it is 7:50am on a Thursday. On the South Eastern Freeway there has been a large MVA in the Heysen tunnels. The car travelling in the left lane has cut across in front of a delivery van in the right lane. Post collision, there are 3 entrapments, 1 in the delivery van, 2 in the car. As a result of the heavy traffic flow, a petrol tanker can't slow in time, sideswipes another semi, sandwiching it between the semi and the wall. as a result of this impact, a hole has been torn in the side of the tanker, spilling fuel in a slow leak. both truckies are NOT entrapped. The 2nd impact has not affected the 1st impact. Cars are banked up between the 2 accidents, but people at the site of the fuel, have fled through the emergency exits in the side, leaving the 3 entrapped and 2 people trying to help them.

In a bit of a twist, Stirling rescue is offline with mechanical problems.

OK starts like this;

MFS:RESPOND RCR ADELAIDE-CRAFERS HIGHWAY DOWNTRACK IN HEYSEN TUNNELS CAR VS DELIVERY VAN 3 TRAPPED*CFSRES: 9019,2919,441,204

STIRLING DEFAULT TO ALDGATE FOR RESCUE
Aldgate responding to RCR TG124
Stirling Pumper responding to incident TG124
Stirling pumper arrives sitrep freeway is totally blocked due to second accident prior to the first and requests more SAAS ambulances.Incident Control requests SAPOL urgently for traffic control to close from Crafers down.Incident Controller gets access to scene at last and makes assessment.Due to the large amount of fuel, requests a full hazmat response as well as requesting that GO and RDO be advised, and arrange ETSA to shutdown power in tunnels via Transport SA.
Directs that Burnside and Glen Osmond 441 access from west end of tunnel with caution and a "Red Flag Warning" for the running fuel leak.Upgrade incident to 2nd alarm rescue and fire cover due to fuel spillage.Aldgate to access incident via Mt Barker Road and access from Devils Elbow for access to tunnel.Stirling Pumper lays a foam blanket down to cover the fuel spillage until other appliances arrive to assist.Burnside Aldgate and MFS crews get to work on the entrapments and assess the viability of stemming the fuel leak from the other accident with sand from the side of the freeway.Due to the hazard of the fuel no rescue gear could be used that emitted a spark so 204 was used for extrication utilising hydraulic tools.

The RDO arrives and takes over and arranges a third alarm and request for foam....Gee this gets bigger than Ben Hur doesnt it :-o
