Title: Summer Crew Jobs
Post by: Robert-Robert34 on August 26, 2006, 01:11:11 PM
Hiya everyone i decided to introduce this topic to answer Jono's question in his topic from what i have read in today's Career One section of the Advertiser, Forestry SA Crawford are now seeking people to fill Summer Crew positons for the 06-07 fire season at the following depots Kupito,Brookman Road,Mount Crawford,Warren Road and Williamstown forest depots

Anyone on this site who lives up that way or near it and is interested in doing summer crew work for Forestry SA can call 08 87 24 28 04 to get an application form and information sheet posted out to them but remember to do it this week as the applications close on the 08/09/2006 at 5:00pm

For everyone else who would rather do summer crew work somewhere else such as in Victoria the Department Of Sustainability and Environment are after people to fill summer crew positions for the 06-07 fire season there all you need to do is call DSE Victoria and get an info pack sent out to you  :-D

I have already rung up and expecting an info pack/application form in the mail some time early this week coming... i can tell you this the DSE summer fire crew jobs offers good pay

Any idea exactly what the wage is? (Like, good compared with a brain surgeon, or the DOLE?) :P

Post by: Robert-Robert34 on August 27, 2006, 07:08:48 PM
For the DSE Project Fire Fighter job SA_FIREY the wage is pretty good as if im lucky enough to pass all 3 stages then the training course i'll be earning anywhere between $574-$777 a fortnight and that is fairly good pay  much better than what im getting on the dole

Just ring this number and ask for a info pack/application form to be sent out to you:136 186

Title: Re: Summer Crew Jobs

Im not real sure to be honest Blinky it might be a week or fornight but the pay depends on how busy the fire season is and the level of experience a person has in fire supression & prevention

probably per fortnight... i wouldnt expect it to pay too highly.... could be good fun though.

being government probably would be fortnightly, wouldnt want to be too busy on that wage.

I am gonna have a crack at getting this job as it's a place where i can use all my fire fighting experience as well as learn new skills and make alot of friends as the DSE staff at Dartmoor depot know me really well not only because i have applied for the job 3 times but they knew i was doing Green Corps last year  :-D

Plus the fortnightly pay would be good as it will be more than im getting now from centrelink  :-)

whats green corps

Green Corps is a work based training course for people aged between 16-20 it involves 5 days a week for 6 months working for National Parks & Wildlife SA doing various projects such as weed removal, tree planting, putting up FWD control barriers and so on... it also offers good pay pending on how far you went through school for my situation since i did year 12 my pay was $588.00 a fortnight  :-D

that sounda alright, bit hippyish but good money for getting in the outdoors.  How do you do it with school on as well, cause I fit in that age category but am still a student, and a student who needsa job!

Well PF some of my colleagues who i worked with had to do SACE studies one or twice a week while the rest of us worked out in the field even though it left us 2 or 3 people short we still managed to get work done

What year are you in at the moment PF cause if you are in year 12 you'll earn between $490-$588 a fortnight im note entirely sure though... but at the end of the course you get a cert 1 in Conservation & Land Management

I have applied for 2 season fire fighter jobs one with Forestry SA and the other with Department Of Sustainability And Environment in Victoria

Since the fitness requirements in both states are different i'll most likely get the Forestry SA as the fitness requirement is to carry a 11.3 kgs backpack over 3.22kms in 30 minutes

The applications for summer crew down here close next week on the 29th but i've already gotten my confirmation letter being that i jumped on the postion last Friday & returned the paperwork Monday

looks like they closed today http://www.deh.sa.gov.au/dehaa/posvacant.html (http://www.deh.sa.gov.au/dehaa/posvacant.html)

CFS are also advertising for a regional commander for R5, see http://www.vacancies.sa.gov.au/ (http://www.vacancies.sa.gov.au/) then select CFS as the Dept/Agency.

hey guys,

im a little closer to becoming an employee of national sparks and wildfires.

i was asked to come in for an interview last monday at black hill conservation park. That went pretty well.

Yesterday I received a call saying that I had got to the next stage, which is the medical and physical. The medical is this friday, and the physical next monday. If I pass both of those its then down to just skills and who they think is best.

wish me luck.....ya filtered!

I rung up Forestry SA & DSE this arvo regarding the jobs i applied for at those 2 agencies for the fire season and they said that applications are still being processed

So its a case of wait & see thats why everytime i go out I'll have my house phone diverted to my mobile for the next few weeks incase of a call to go in for an interview  :-D

Good luck mate but remember that once you pass the medical the fitness test isn't gonna be a walk in the park its going to be a really tiring walk over anywhere between 3-5 kms in 30 minutes or more carrying either a 11 or 15 kg backpack

Take it from someone who has done the DSE fitness test and found it hard cause NPWSA & DSE fire fighters are the ones who go into scrub & other inaccessible terrain to fight fires

So just take it easy ok  and dont be intimidated by the competition cause chances are you will pass and they wont

yeah, and I have actually been training for it a little. I knew what the requirements of the physical were already, so i have a bit of a heads up. you watch, i'll be all hyped for the physical and find out I have high blood presure or something and will fail the medical! I doubt it though.

parks actually tried to call me 5 times, but I was on KI, and I don't think they've even heard of the words "mobile phone tower" over there. so they tried again and got me when i got back. its hilarious when you land at the airport and your phone vibrates for about 2 minutes straight with messages and missed calls.

Last I heard is that Telstra are the only mobile phone tower on Kangaroo Island.

If you walk through parts of Deep Creek conservation park, a Telstra connected mobile phone will connect to the Kangaroo Island tower, while every other mobile disconnects.

Found this out during planning for a bushwalk with young kids. Big shuffle of mobile phones between parents to ensure walkers could contact the 4wd vehicle if required.

Good on ya mate for passing the medical  when i went for the DSE job a couple years back i passed both stages but bombed out on the fitness test as alot more was required plus you need to do the test within a required time of 30 minutes or less

2090 the fitness test requires all applicants to undertake a pack hike carrying a backpack of anywhere between 11-20kgs other a certain amount of distance within 30 minutes or less trust me i have been there and done that  :-D

boy of probation good luck on the fitness test mate as you'll be up against people who have probably had the same job before but dont let the competition intimidate you ok  dont make the same mistake i did

yeah i know what im up for.

this one is complete 4 laps of the front area of black hill c.p. in 30 mins or les with a 10kg weighted pack on. and do 100 rakehoe strikes in 3 mins or something. thats what you have to do to pass to the best of my knowledge.

hey,

well, i failed unfortunately.

I was on lap 4 of 8 when the instructor pulled me off.

so after all that effort, nothing. which sucks really bad. you feel like you wasted a month and a half.

oh well, next year.

I have applied for another forestry job and this time its with StateWide Forest Services who are a Tasmanian base bluegum forest company with an office/depot in Mount Gambier

At this same time in 2004 the Green Corps job appeared in The Border Watchso this might be a repeat of my success in getting a job in 2005 cause i've got an interview next week with the employer quite possibly on Wednesday  :-D and its about in the same time frame when i got a interview with the Green Corps

Plus the added bonus which i think maybe the clincher is my CFS leve 1 & 2 training cause the job requires people to not only do pruning, planting, competition control but also fire fighting

The job ad specifically stated that having CFS training would be an advantage so it sounds like i may have both feet in the door as well as a job come the end of this week coming

Will keep you updated

Title: Re: Summer Crew Jobs
Post by: Robert-Robert34 on November 25, 2006, 12:41:14 PM
They didnt specifically ask for a certain licence ath just a regular drivers licence but i did tell the employer on the phone that im willing & keen to do any training which includes truck licencing if its offered to me

If that doesnt prove how keen I am in getting this job so badly I dont know what will  :-D

14 minutes for 4 out of 8 laps in a 30 minute test???

i know your gonna start slowing down a bit, but i think the instructor needs to go back to math class....
Title: Re: Summer Crew Jobs
Post by: probie_boy on November 26, 2006, 01:55:41 PM
i believe it was because on one lap i exceeded the 3:45 lap time which was supposed to be the standard. but, still stupid.
Title: Re: Summer Crew Jobs
Post by: fire03rescue on November 26, 2006, 06:42:56 PM
Thats normal for running laps, you start at a good time  a few slower laps in the middle and then most people go faster for the last few laps.

Post by: Robert-Robert34 on November 26, 2006, 07:21:18 PM
Well everyone the new week is upon us and i can say without a doubt im really nervous cause theres a really high chance i might be an employee with StateWide Forest Services by the end of this week or early next week if the interview goes really well on Wednesday

Even though its a Tasmanian based company they do have a forestry depot in Mount Gambier and thats where i will be based it means i'll be able to ride around on their forestry fire trucks  :-D

I have a good feeling that my positive and keen attitude left the employer with a good impression of me..... its abit weird i was supposed to have my appointment at 13:30 but instead they interviewed me @ 13:00

If you are looking for a some work where you can use your firefighting, you could contact your local National sparks office, they are always looking for guys to be employed through westaff, you get called in for burnoffs, big fires, taskforces etc, it could be a good stepping stone for a seasonal job next fire season.

NPWS and FSA dont employ casual firies here in the South East. If they need help they use CFS or get crews from further away.

Post by: Camo on February 03, 2007, 10:47:16 PM
Im not aware of any pockets of land owned by SA Water that would require fire cover in the South East.

FSA used to employ casuals but some bright spark higher up decided they had enough staff to cover it and didnt require the casuals.  Just another Government department trying to save dough.

Cant say it has affected them though...well not from what i have seen on the fireground anyway.

Also to add that some forest companies down here like TimberCorp,G&R,Tabeel Trading and so on dont hire casual summer crew as they get contractors or people within their own company to provide fire cover for logging operations

However other companies like ITC,Victorian Plantations,StateWide Forest Services do employ summer casuals you just got to ask at the right time of year if they need people  :-)
