If it was an error, they just made it again with the ‘Code Red’ message…
Maybe its a new idea someone has had, to let the vollies know that region one cares about us?... :?

I have done a training night on C.B.R - Note, it was the most BORING 4 hours of my life!!

Did they make you watch that ghastly Video taken from a QLD fire CDROM? If that’s the case, I sympathise with you… its horrible… :sleepy3:

That'd be right... the public computer I'm using is locked down behind belief...
However, I will try it on my home computer, just to make sure :)

SA Firefighter General / Map of Mt Osmond Fire
« on: April 27, 2005, 05:24:40 PM »
For those of you that don't get Volunteer, there is a map of the Mount Osmond Fire in there... It’s not what I was asking for, but it’s damn clear what an insignificant fire it was compared to the Wangary fire...
The Latest Volunteer can be found in PDF format here...(its about 2.56MB)

HAZMAT / HAZMAT/CBR Do we have enough?
« on: April 27, 2005, 04:44:07 PM »
That’s right… The CFS doesn’t have the resources to cope with a large-scale HAZMAT incident, especially a mass casualty incident.

The Hazmat course is easy enough that any CABA operator should be able to do it… and that would not only make Hazmat operators easier to find, but also make it easier for non Hazmat brigades to identify Hazmat incidents…

That is, if a non Hazmat brigade is responding to an explosion in a local shopping mall, they would probably approach uphill/upwind, and be able to tell other appliances wind direction etc, before they arrive. (I’m not saying that non-Hazmat brigades wouldn’t already do this)…

All Equipment discussion / Mount Barker Pumper

Like I said the Dennis is the Rolls Royce of fire trucks, but like anything second hand there will be problems, mind you how often do our new trucks go out of service, isn't that right Stirling!!

Actually, the new part of Stirling pumper is beautiful… Until the recent electrical problems, (Recent being that the truck is still offline) The Isuzu chassis has been excellent… The main problem, the pump, is a second hand American pump that was put in to save money (against our specifications).
My point being that our problems have been with second hand parts, not new ones…
(I’m not certain that the pump is second hand, but it was defiantly not bought for our pumper)

This may be fixed in Version 2, but just to let you know, I have a lot of problems logging in... I have no worries if I choose to stay logged in permanently, but if I’m on a public computer, I have to re-login every time I want to do anything that requires a registered user… Sometimes I’ll even have to log in twice, once to get the reply form, and then again to post the reply… Meaning I have to copy and paste my reply into the new form, once I have logged in again…)
Does anyone else have this problem?

I really don't think mis-use will be an issue... Police won't accept a CFS badge as a reason not to give a fine, and members that are that inclined could do that now, with a cfs sticker, or belt clip, which are already available... or even to don their yellows, and abuse the power that comes with that... (just an observation)

Remember the fire service does more than put wet stuff on the red stuff.

Thats right... we also find them hot, and leave them wet :P

Quote from: rescue5271
...or was it stopped because all region one RCR brigades have it?? ...

Stirling still doesn't have O2 either, and I don't know of any other Brigades in our group (mount lofty) that carry it, so thats at least 2 RCR brigades in region 1 that still don't have O2...

Sometimes it seems like "shock" tactics are the only way to get into these kids heads!!!

I don't think there is a way of getting into these kids heads... I respond to RCR's regularly, and still take unnecessary  risks on the road...
(Although I know when I'm taking the risks and don't do it very often, once is enough to kill you... )

Country Fire Service / Use of fire sirens

It is only when they hear a siren out the front of their house that they may relize and then i might be to late to do anything.

Yeah, apparently in the Canberra fires a couple of years back, a resident knocked on his neighbours door to check that they were prepared for the approaching fire, and found them watching the TV. The nieghbour said to him, "Hey, have you seen the fires on the TV, they are unbeliavable".... the fire was only a block away at the time....

well as we all know fire restrictions will be remaining till end April if not may, So summer is still here and if we dont get rain soon it may be a dry long year.

Try telling that to the 'civilians' who seem to think that autumn means they can burn off.. :angry4: :pain10:

Country Fire Service / Use of fire sirens
« on: April 14, 2005, 04:20:54 PM »
I suspect that the decrease in siren use may be distancing the community from the CFS... Recently it has stuck me how little people know/care about the CFS... So many people don't fully understand what we do, and the number of times I am asked how much I get paid is unbelievable... I think Mike's right... People are moving into the area and with no sirens to remind them that we exist, they take us forgranted...

SAAS / SAAS Assist
« on: April 13, 2005, 10:46:03 PM »
I imagine your query was more aimed at the brigades that are not RCR trained...??
As an RCR brigade, Stirling assistes with lifts at almost every RCR we attend, as its part of our job, and as such we are trained to do it... (Meaning its not an issue)...
We did have an ambo come in and give us a lecture on 'in-line extrication', which was VERY usefull and helped give us an insight into what the Ambos are being taught, and how we can help with that...

However, like I said, Stirling is an RCR (and Rope Rescue) brigade, which puts us in a different category to most others...

Country Fire Service / Use of fire sirens
« on: April 10, 2005, 04:37:29 PM »
We don't use our siren either... (Although maybe thats because its broken :( )
I think sirens should still be used, so that the community knows that there is an incident happening, Even if it is just sounded when the first sitrep has come in, saying that its a going fire.
Like rescue5271 said,  I know a lot of residents who are relying on the sirens to tell them there is a fire...

Good Times – when you say use it for “big rural jobs”, Does that mean you sound the siren once you realize that its big? or for any rural response?

Wow! how cool is that?
Does anyone know what the stategy is for distributing the new PPE? I hear that its going to be a long process, with only half a dozen BA operators getting it form each brigade now...

perhaps we need to revisit the uniform guide within brigades so we get some consistency back?

Sounds like a good idea to me... But do you want to organise it? because no one else will want to...

Terrorism / What would you do?
« on: April 08, 2005, 03:11:45 AM »
Here's a question that I've been wondering, and it'd  be interesting  to hear your thoughts: :?:
There is a terrorist attack in Adelaide... It's possibly radiological.... Its big, and they need resources, so they respond half the states CFS brigades... If you went to help, you would most likely be exposed to some radiation... would you go?

Although I would want to do everything I could to help, I'm still young, and don't know if cancer would be fun... I'd probably try to find another way to help, away from ground zero... :(
